OT: Tariff Economics Discussion

I'm repeating myself because i still think you are missing a major point and it's hurting Democrats.

I would take your argument seriously if Democrats did not try and pass BBB. But the FACT remains that they tried to pass BBB at the height of the worst inflation in 50 years. Not 5 years, not 10 years, 50 years. Americans were hurting, we were all hurting from the covid craziness, but democrats didn't listen, just as i don't think you are listening to the people. They spoke loud and clear they were not willing to pay for the inflation any longer.

I think Americans are smarter than that. I think it was the #1 issue in the election and if democrats can't acknowledge they messed up on inflation then i think it's going to be a long road to haul for them in the future.

Inflation is called the hidden tax but we ALL saw it. Every.Single.Democrat, bar Joe Manchin, voted for it.

It came off as 1) Democrats didn't understand inflation or 2) Democrats didn't care about Americans. Fair or not that is the image that lies with the American people.
BS, the BBB bill was voted on in Nov 21, BEFORE the height of inflation, but lest we forget, it had proposals that are popular with the majority of Americans.

  • $400 billion aiming to address childcare, childcare costs, and universal pre-K
  • $165 billion aiming to address healthcare and Medicare hearing expansion
  • $150 billion aiming to address public housing and affordability issues
  • $150 billion aiming to address home care

Just proves that you don't understand inflation.

There are alot of things popular with Americans. Giving a gold bar to everyone would be popular. But everything has a consequence. There is no free lunch. Democrats don't seem to be getting the message.

Ah yes, entitlement expansion. Thank goodness for Joe Manchin.

You work 40, 50, 60 hours a week — and the IRS robs you like a cartel.

Trump’s External Revenue Service flips the game:

YOU keep your paycheck.
Foreign imports get taxed, not American workers.

If you're mad about this, you don’t understand.

Here’s the truth:
They hate the idea of you being free.
They NEED you taxed, broke, and begging.

Not anymore.

I saw that yesterday. It's flabbergasting how they don't understand the most basic of principals.

We got one poster over here talking about inflation being a "hidden tax" while at the same time applauding tariffs which are literally inflation.
This is not true.

Trump used Tariffs during his first term. What was inflation?

Since the election you have been screaming about inflation, yet ....... inflation has been crushed so far.

I will agree that, theoretically, tariffs contribute to inflation. But nothing happens in a vacuum and your worries have failed to materialize. Most likely due to the deflationary effects of DOGE. It's a good start but we have a long way to go.

What does it say about Democrat policy if Trump can use inflation causing Tariffs and still keep inflation levels below where democrats had them?

Wait. It takes some time. And do you really think DOGE saving less than $100 million is going to offset massive, and unprecedented tariffs.

I would also like for you to acknowledge that the admin absolutely screwed up the math on their "reciprocal" tariffs? They were called out by the authors of the paper that they based the tariffs on. They literally can't math, but you have faith in their business acumen.

What do you make of Trump trying to claim they are negotiating with China, while China says that's total bullshit?

You know Trump is going to give in, he doesn't have the stomach for this when his rich buddies start getting hurt.

I am not going to claim to trust China I know that much.

But I also don't quite trust someone who tells me they are negotiating more trade deals than there are countries in the world either.

I think China is at the table. They are not overt people and they like to do things behind the scenes. They already stated they would come to the table if Trump treated them with respect. I think it's why you dont see him smack talking about China on social media yet. If things fall apart he will let us know and take it to the court of public opinion.

I don't think it's going to be easy. We are calling China out on their practices and no one likes to be called out. It's that simple.

But i do think China will realize we were on an unsustainable path and that things must change. If they don't they risk being isolated by the rest of the world. Bessent said this morning that we are close to deals with India, Korea, and Japan.

China will take longer. And it may be painful and volatile in the short term, but in the end i hope we end up on a level playing field. I know America and freedom will win on an even playing field.

Why don't you lay out what a good trade deal looks like in your eyes so that the goal posts don't move. As it is, Trump could make the greatest deal in the world and you would bash it.

Oh and remember how you said you just wanted the tariffs to be phased in? Well look at the below.

The economic advisors paper on restructuring the gobal trading system should be required reading for all. It is a blue print for exactly what is going on. You will notice, that it was always the intention to phase in tariffs. The rest is just negotiating

But I also don't quite trust someone who tells me they are negotiating more trade deals than there are countries in the world either.

From the times article:

Your trade adviser, Peter Navarro, says 90 deals in 90 days is possible. We're now 13 days into the point from when you lifted the reciprocal, the discounted reciprocal tariffs. There's zero deals so far. Why is that?
No, there’s many deals.
When are they going to be announced?

You have to understand, I'm dealing with all the companies, very friendly countries. We're meeting with China. We're doing fine with everybody. But ultimately, I've made all the deals.
Not one has been announced yet. When are you going to announce them?
I’ve made 200 deals.
You’ve made 200 deals?
100%.
Can you share with whom?
Because the deal is a deal that I choose. View it differently: We are a department store, and we set the price. I meet with the companies, and then I set a fair price, what I consider to be a fair price, and they can pay it, or they don't have to pay it. They don't have to do business with the United States, but I set a tariff on countries. Some have been horrible to us. Some have been okay. Nobody's been great. Nobody's been great. Everybody took advantage of us. What I'm doing is I will, at a certain point in the not too distant future, I will set a fair price of tariffs for different countries. These are countries—some of them have made hundreds of billions of dollars, and some of them have made just a lot of money. Very few of them have made nothing because the United States was being ripped off by every, almost every country in the world, in the entire world. So I will set a price, and when I set the price, and I will set it fairly according to the statistics, and according to everything else. For instance, do they have the VAT system in play? Do they charge us tariffs? How much are they charging us? How much have they been charging us? Many, many different factors, right. How are we being treated by that country? And then I will set a tariff. Are we paying for their military? You know, as an example, we have Korea. We pay billions of dollars for the military. Japan, billions for those and others. But that, I'm going to keep us a separate item, the paying of the military. Germany, we have 50,000 soldiers—

I’m just curious, why don’t you announce these deals that you’ve solidified?
I would say, over the next three to four weeks, and we're finished, by the way.
You’re finished?
We’ll be finished.
Oh, you will be finished in three to four weeks.
I’ll be finished. Now, some countries may come back and ask for an adjustment, and I'll consider that, but I'll basically be, with great knowledge, setting—ready? We're a department store, a giant department store, the biggest department store in history. Everybody wants to come in and take from us. They're going to come in and they're going to pay a price for taking our treasure, for taking our jobs, for doing all of these things. But what I'm doing with the tariffs is people are coming in, and they're building at levels you've never seen before. We have $7 trillion of new plants, factories and other things, investment coming into the United States. And if you look back at past presidents, nobody was anywhere near that. And this is in three months.

Will you call President Xi if he doesn’t call you?
No.
You won’t?
Nope.
Has he called you yet?
Yep.
When did he call you?
He's called. And I don't think that's a sign of weakness on his behalf.
But you would think it’s a sign of weakness if you called him?
I don’t–I just look—

he fumbled his coalition and ****ed up. He failed. He's going to stick his tail between his legs. PRETEND that Korea (which doesn't charge us tarrifs) Agreed to not charge us tarrifs and declare victory. Art of the deal!

They are working on deals.

We are "CLOSE TO" deals with India, Japan, Korea at a minimum. No where did he say he had deals. They are working on deals.

Maybe they want to wait to finalize deals until they know what they are dealing with in China?

The tariffs demanded they come to the table. There was no other way to get them there.

Are you really willing to sit there, with no clear understanding of how things work or how this 'plan' will work, to just unquestioningly support this?

The intention is to use the tariffs to get China to the table. If they don't come to the table we definitely could go south.

I have prepared my portfolio accordingly.

But to your original question, we have a long way to go before we get to where we were under biden and 9% inflation.

Umm, in the transcript of his recent interview he claimed he had 200 deals.

Once again, if his lips are moving,Trump is lying

We were referencing the Bessent conference this morning. Or at least i was.

That's almost worse since Trump is out there claiming he's made all these deals and he's going to make 200 deals.

You would think the Trade Advisor would keep the President aware. Or, was this typical Trump just making shit up?
