OT Twitter set to accept Musk offer

you completely ruin your credibility by using the phrase "hiding the truth". Shows your bias
I wasn't trying to be credible. Not sure where you got that from. Just saying the things they hide is pretty sad. Yeah, i'm bias. At this point who isn't? You're either ok with it or your not.

Obviously you think the stuff they've censored already is "truly awful and evil".

Specifically as it relates to twitter, when you censor/disallow articles from major news publications like the article about biden's laptop due completely to political bias, I would say that qualifies as "hiding the truth".
They have the right to do that, so I am not arguing they can't. But they clearly tried to hide/prevent information from being disseminated due to the political content. They have every right to censor content any way they see fit, but let's not pretend it is/was not based on their political bias/motive.

Imagine people being ok with censoring information. Remember when we made fun on N. Korea for their propaganda? If it's false, then people will see it and not believe. Hiding info makes me wonder why you hide it.

Censoring information is just absolutely dangerous and not ok, IMO. I cant imagine anyone being ok with that.
LOL

Talking heads on cable news and people that live on social media, and wake up in the morning looking for something to be outraged over, don't represent the majority of people in this country, or even close to it.

For example, when all the airlines last week announced they were removing their mask requirements on planes, the majority of responses on twitter were of the "You're awful. I'm never flying your airline again" variety. Yet, when I flew this past weekend, I'd say easily less than 10% of the passengers on the plane were even wearing masks.

I mean sure, there are going to be people that freak out on Twitter over this Musk buyout, and you'll find plenty of good material to laugh at, but like everything else, that collection of people are a very small minority.

Unfortunately that "small minority" have been given a large voice and are driving policy using weak snowflakes, leaders and politicians as a conduit. And that's a serious problem that has to be rectified.

Will be interesting to see what changes can be made. Twitter used to be the wild west and was wide open in terms of very minimal content moderation. That all changed over time as the platform was used in many nefarious ways (think human trafficking, terrorists, child porn, etc...). I think anyone who expects there to be some massive changes are going to be quite disappointed.

IDK if it's the ultimate dream. He works the kind of hours that take years off his life. Has very complicated personal relationships (to be complimentary). He frequently suffers depression and lives under soul-crushing stress every single day.

He is as driven as any person who has walked the planet, but I don't think that equates to much happiness.
Elon is not from this planet so he is not encumbered or slowed by such human conditions.

Nobody expects massive changes, but when a former President of the United States can’t post on your platform, there’s a huge issue. THATS what’s going to change... At least seemingly. Elon seems to have his head in the right place.

Statement from Musk. If he truly can authenticate all humans I think it would go a long way in stopping the bots the pop up on Twitter.

I can’t really help but believe that having one person in charge of the “digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated” will only ramp up the post-truthism that is slowly destroying America.

I’m glad he bought Twitter, but it’s not going to change my life one way or another. Never been on twitter, never going to be on Twitter. I’d delete fb/Instagram if it weren’t for Jeep, gun, food, hiking/camping pages that I follow.

TI Ban Island inhabitants looking wistfully at Twitter Ban Island inhabitants.

Grassroots campaign for Elon to make Cris an offer he can’t refuse?

The only thing that would make this better is if Trump is one of his partners.

This is good news for CNN and MSNBC. Their viewership may quadruple over the next few days as conservatives tune in to watch the meltdown.

People absolutely expect massive changes. You just highlighted a significant one. How do you let Trump back on the platform without opening a huge can of worms? He violated the platform's rules, multiple times, and was banned. You allow him back, you have opened yourself to lawsuits from every other person who has been banned for similar reasons. And that's just one angle/example...

Yup, there will be huge changes. It's a company that has gotten fat and lazy despite losing $1B as a public company. Zero innovation and slow pace of product development.

I'm sure he's still figuring out content moderation. You can't escape it, but obviously it will be less restrictive. I expect the more immediate shift to be one that is not trying to determine what is disinformation.

That's incorrect. 2/3 of the deal is coming out of his pocket.
Elon has secured 25.5B of debt and margin loan financing from Morgan Stanley, BOA and Barclays, and is providing 21B in equity funding himself. I would not want to speculate where the 21B is coming from but he obviously has plenty of Tesla, SpaceX and Boring he can LQ.

That if Musk is the big swinging Free Speech stick he professes (and I believe he is), will be interesting to see who else is partaking.
Sure it’s for the investment primarily but this has societal/culture impacts.
He actually said the opposite. He’s said in an interview that wokeness is a deadly virus that is the single greatest threat to mankind, or something similar to this. He’s doing this for the greater good and I applaud it.

I think you're all drastically overestimating the number of people, even on the left, that actually give a shit about this whole Musk/Twitter saga.
Nope, not at all. All the leftist heavyweights have gone out and decried this and spouted the usual fear mongering lies about how it’s too dangerous for the government to not censor social media. It’s truly Orwellian. Read more, a lot more, and not people who are part of the big media complex.

You don’t become the richest man in the world by doing things for the greater good.

He’s doing it to make money. Nothing wrong with that at all, but let’s not ascribe altruism as a motive.

That’s actually the thing about Twitter…you don’t have to go on it for it to affect you because the news and various blogs will pick a random tweet to include in the story as if it’s a reflection of society at large.

Twitter is the fuel that powers the internet rage machine.

What fuels some people kills others. I think he is the type that loves that fast paced complicated life. I could be wrong of course because I am normally wrong lol

There are people who like Twitter and that’s great. But I have no interest in knowing what famous people think. I have an account and adult children who will alert me if there is something I might really want to see. Same with Facebook. I have an account but only check in to see my high school death page, The Far Side group, an astronomy group, and a Calvin and Hobbes group. The only social media service I like is Snap Chat because it goes away and I only actually see my grandchildren in action. Screenshot if memorable.

Venture capitalists don't invest in publicy traded companies. Perhaps he is partnering with a buyout shop, but VCs don't play in deals like that. Regardless Elon is putting up many billions of dollars of personal wealth for this deal. It wouldn't surprise me if he went alone on the equity component and then financed some with debt.
He raised debt from about 6 banks, $25b worth and the rest is equity loans against his Tesla assets. Lots of leveraged desks were asking for a seat at the table per the few I spoke to today.

Morgan Stanley 1 - GS/JPM 0

Actually, it's Morgan Stanley 2 - GS/JPM 0 if you count the E-trade acquisition which both GS and JPM got outbid on.

People who think men can get pregnant are suddenly concerned about misinformation if Elon owns Twitter.

What a country!
