politics and social commentary have been in sports for decades if not centuries. The only reason people want to separate them now like it’s church and state is because the politics and views make them uncomfortable. Not because It’s an escape for them.
Bingo...
This is the heart of the matter. ‘Sports has always been an escape from reality’ is the new catch phrase rooted in intellectual dishonesty.
the establishment of Negro League baseball franchises. To Branch Rickey choosing Jackie Robinson to break the color barrier in baseball. Every major league player has worn #42 on the same day in games for a number of years now. It doesn’t get more ‘social/political’ than that. It’s a statement, one of respect and honor, but it’s outside the game itself.
the US boycott of the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, the USSR boycott of the ‘84 olympics in LA. The ‘72 Munich Olympics with the Muslim terrorist killings of Jewish people. The ‘68 Olympics with the raised black panther fists, during, gasp...the national anthem. It doesn’t get more political than that. The boycotts were literally over political positions.
Muhammed Ali was as big of a social/political activist there ever was in sports. He’s the most beloved, popular boxer in history.
curt flood, a black man, revolutionized sports by bucking the system and was the father of free agency. Do people not think these were actual stories? That intertwined their beloved sports.
it’s just not true that people want to ‘escape real life’ when watching sports because sports has always been about real life. Succeeding when the cards have been stacked against them. Tom Ronaldi has a job to try and make people cry on game day every single Saturday by having a long piece on some player or coach about, real life, away from the court/field/sidelines. Real life is everywhere in sports. It’s actually why we like sports. The athletes are humanized.
if it’s just sports that gives us an outlet, why is watching them without fans not enough? Why do we complain how boring it is without them? It’s not the politics and social aspects that is disrupting the enjoyment. It’s the difference in opinion that’s disrupting it. And if that bothers me or someone else, that’s 100 percent a me or someone else problem. Without discussion. It’s not a them problem.
sports without reality woven into our lives, about their lives, is impersonal. We’re a personal species. Sports in a vacuum is barren. People don’t even realize that part of sports is we watch these guys compete and do things we aren’t capable of. And we love it and the reality of their lives bring us closer to them. We can love sports because of the reality. It makes us more like them in that regard. We can love or hate players because we’re personal beings who need connection.
I’ll leave this for the ‘sports is an escape from real life’ guy. If kneeling during the national anthem or having social justice patches on jerseys is enough of an ‘away from the game’ story to trigger a big enough personal and emotional response to not only boycott a sport you claim to enjoy and love, but even the school whose very players you profess to love and care for; is it not reasonable to think that all of the other off field stuff we learn about, read about, hear about, that is the epitome of real life, also enough to have triggered a personal and emotional response that draws you closer to the sport and the players as well? Meaning, that regardless of whether you agree or disagree with the subject matter, it’s disingenuous at the core, that sports is just an outlet from reality. The reality of life and sport are the same. They are both unscripted. There’s a symbiotic relationship between sports and real life. They are in sync with each other.
It’s unequivocally not just a relief. They never have been. It doesn’t mean that we can’t sit back, look forward to and enjoy a 2 yard gain more than having to cut the grass, change a diaper or go to work. That’s universal. But that’s not really the real life these kinds of proclamations are talking about, are they?
If you want relief from reality, go watch a movie, a scripted story with people pretending to be someone different than in real life. You’re doing it wrong if you’re tuning into sports for the same reason.
