Prayers are pouring in for the family of Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables on Tuesday morning.
Venables, a longtime Clemson Tigers assistant coach who took the Oklahoma Sooners job when Lincoln Riley left for USC, is having a difficult season. The Sooners are 5-5 on the year in their first season in the SEC. Oklahoma needs to win one of its final two games - vs. Alabama, at LSU - to reach bowl eligibility. It's going to be difficult to do that, to say the least.
Unfortunately, Venables is also going through a difficult time off of the field. His longtime wife, Julie, is battling cancer.
Venables announced on Monday night that his wife's cancer had returned. She underwent surgery to remove a tumor last week.
“A big part of the battle was her choice to fight and she’s going to keep swinging," Venables said.
Prayers are pouring in for his family.
"I can’t imagine how hard it has been on their family. What a toll that must take. Prayers for her and the rest of the family for sure," one fan wrote.
"Praying for the Venables family all the way from longhorn nation," one fan added.
"Some things are bigger than football and I hope people can realize that. Prayers for the Venables family !" one fan added.
"Extremely sad news. From watching my wife’s battle, the absolute greatest fear is the cancer returning. Continued prayers for Julie and the family as they keep fighting," one fan added.
"I’ve been through this with my wife for the last two years Three surgeries and the loss of a breast we are in the all clear. Prayers to the Venables," one fan added.
Our thoughts are with Brent and his family during this difficult time. Our hope is that Julie Venables will be able to fight this and emerge victorious on the other side.
Oklahoma will return to the field on Saturday, taking on Alabama.
Kickoff is currently scheduled for 7:30 p.m. E.T. The game will be airing on ABC.
