Republicans To Increase Social Security Payments

It seems like democrats are upset with DOGE, when there is a high chance that the savings they produce will increase the strength of the program and, Elon predicts, could be used to increase payments. Whether that is done or not is probably not up to Elon, but I'm sure he has some say in the situation.

The point remains, there is plenty of waste, fraud, and abuse in many of the government agencies. By pretending like there is no fraud or asking for proof, it just comes off as disingenuous. Democrats will benefit from the savings just as republicans will. The ONLY people hurt by snuffing this stuff our is the fraudsters. I just don't understand the hate. And, as evidenced by poll numbers, most Americans don't either.

I'll chime in and say that these things should happen to people who are found to have intentionally defrauded SS:

• Pay back the fraudulent amount with interest. Garnish wages if necessary.
• Lifetime ban on all government financial assistance, including SS.

A financial revolution is here. There is no going back. All systems will be computerized going forward. The fraud just got 10 times harder.

We need to add a focus on SS disability too. There are a ton of people on SS disability who can work 40 hours per week, especially as so much has transitioned to virtual work and WFH.

Anyone living off a gov't check under the age of 60, should have to provide something for the benefit of the country.

If not, they should not be allowed to vote IMO.

If you don't have any skin in the game, you just vote for your next payment increase.

I'll never quite understand how Social Security is so highly supported by Conservatives. It's low hanging fruit to say "old people" and I don't think that's fair anyway. And I certainly understand the "I've paid into it" argument, so I'm not at all in disagreement.

It just seems like more of a conservative position to not pay into SS and instead use the saved or invested money to retire on. I assume no one can ever run on a platform to eliminate it, but it has always fascinated me. My super conservative father used to complain having to pay into it, until he was old enough to start drawing from it. Unsurprisingly he was then a fan.

There is a difference though between paying into it and being forced to pay into it.

There are lots of private companies out there doing elderly care that are actively defrauding the medicare system. I know this first hand.

So, if you know this first hand, did you put up the red flag that the American people are being defrauded?

No way we can get rid of SS in this country. IMO. We're not going to allow a mass die off of elderly which is exactly what would happen if we totally left everyone up to their own devices. The oucome for many would be better but for so many more it would be much much worse. So i think we are going to have to keep some form of guaranteed annuity.

Extending the retirement age ever upwards or introducing means testing etc just doesn't sit well with me because I didn't have a choice to give up my income so I feel like I deserve some of that back for pete's sake, and those two things just make it less likely that I get any of it back.

If there is fraud and waste in the SS system, remoing that and modernizing the back end systems and processes to help prevent it going forward is akin to securing the border. With that done we can then figure out what to do with the known knowns of the problem. I am hopeful that the DOGE effort will at least get that first part done.

I think that there could be some solution that allows a portion to be self directed. Maybe that only starts when a person is a certain age or maybe not.

The only thing about that is that then means that the recordkeeping and systems to manage woudl need way beefed up and the SSA would be on the hook to facilitate / hold individual accounts for everyone ... and the "self directed" portion would have to be really your money as of the date/time that you are allowed to self direct it, and that would need to calculated on the fly paycheck by paycheck for everyone starting with your first job at mcdonalds when you are in high school until the day you die.

Geez. That's next level to the 10th power when we're talking about systems that probably has dead people getting benefits.

By eliminating fraud, of which there is an immense amount, there will be more money available for honest recipients.

This is a very simple concept that swing voters and some democrats understand.

I think Republicans are cementing votes for generations right now.

I realize there are many different ways that fraud can occur but just speaking to my personal experience with Social Security. After my mom past away, it took less than three weeks for a letter from Social Security to arrive requesting that a payment made to her two days after she passed away be returned. I was shocked that they were that on top of it.
