Should Kavanaugh withdraw because of the sexual misconduct allegations? Curious on the overall opinion here and haven't seen it discussed.

I don’t think it will amount to anything, and while it would probably be the right thing to do, he won’t.

All allegations have to be taken seriously but there does seem to be a trend of men in positions of power always receiving allegations at crucial moments in their lives. That is fishy, but again, all allegations have to be taken seriously.

To answer your question, he should. I just know he won’t because to me he strikes me as a corrupt scumbag with no morals whatsoever. Just has that look to him IMO.

The most depressing part in all of this is that a man who has allegedly sexually assaulted women will be put in a position of power that he will use to then limit women’s rights, especially those that pertain to their own choices about their own body. THAT is something that should not be lost in this, but that is also something that we as a country deserve for electing a reality TV star.

We get the government we deserve.

Of course he should. He is furthering the white, male privilege patriarchy by even his existence. His refusal to step down at the first accusation is despicable. Women are clearly a marginalized group and deserve the benefit of the doubt.

Explain to me why it took a nominee for these women to come forward. That is what I don’t understand at all. If these allegations truly happened, why now? If it was truly so bad, why not come out sooner? That’s what I find to be unbelievable. It takes this kind of stage for you to come out?

If you live at home in this economy, imagine what you'll be doing during a democrat economy.

Just wait til RBG dies. The red wave on the SCOTUS is going to cause people like you to start the car and close the garage door.

During a democratic economy stocks do well so I should be fine. Also I’ll be working in healthcare so my job security will be A+

RBG is all but on her deathbed. She can barely speak coherently. She has not formed an original opinion on court matters in 2 plus years, her aids do literally everything for her. SOON
Funny how you look up all these accusers and they are all fringe left in their political leanings, the main accuser can’t remember key details, never told anyone, and oh yea it supposedly happened in high school. Never mind democrats weren’t worried and willingly looking the other way when Bill Clinton had multiple accusers who were much more reliable accusing him of rape and abuse after he was already in politics. Dem’s trying to delay the inevitable is all this is, they found these pawns willing to make up crap to delay the process.

Very ironic microcosm of American culture that the dumbest president in our history will probably choose multiple Supreme Court justices to erase years of progress and turn back the clock on this country.

Not a good time to be part of the middle class or a minority in America. But it’s a great time to be white and wealthy, which explains why this board has a hard on for trump

His refusal to step down is despicable??

Ford's claim is shaky AT BEST & Kavanaugh has proclaimed his innocence...does the guy not have a right to defend himself???

And if everyone is supposed to step down after any accusation, then that would set a horrible precedent & DEMS would set up smear campaigns against anyone they don't like b/c, let's face it, ANYONE with half a brain knows what's going on here... Whether you want to admit it or not

I'm white & I'm middle class & I'm doing just fine...
All of my "minority" friends seem to be doing just fine as well...
I can't seem to think of one that has went backwards due to the Trump Presidency...

If you consider progress to be killing unborn babies & removing God from almost everything then yes, I'll gladly welcome a Supreme Court that would "turn back the clock"

Should the accusers be heard and a thorough nonpartisan investigation held, including hearing the testimony of supposed eye witnesses--of course, anyone who doesnt want that is just a partisan ideologue who doesn't care about morality (or has ceded morality in a kind of Faustian bargain).

I say that because the women should be heard and Kavanaugh should be heard because the goal should be to find the truth. The women should be heard so that Kav can clear his name if he is innocent. It is for him as much as them...

No one should shy away from further transparency...(for both sides of the political divide)

See that’s the problem, your views are based off of literature from 2,000 years ago. Mine are based off of literature from less than 100 years ago. Therefore, I am significantly more advanced than you. From an unbiased point of view how can anyone say that we should apply outlandishly outdated ideology to modern problems and expect a reasonable solution? You just can’t. Religion serves a great purpose of answering the terrifying question of what happens when you die, and sure there are some good lessons in the stories. However, religion mostly launders money and divides.
I do not respect you

Let have real talk. You think this country is better with open borders? Sell me on socialism, show me one place where it has ever worked. America should not he apologizing because of her history.
The “dumbest president” as you describe him became more independently wealthy than any of his predecessors(using their rules no less) He will be the only president in history who will leave office less wealthy than when he was sworn in. He donates his entire paycheck. All the others have used the office and played the system to their advantage to become mega wealthy. Same can be said the 90% or more of congressmen and senators. Washington loves the current system, they use these hot button issues to distract while they all become filthy rich while regular Americans get nowhere. Trump is shaking up the system, he is FAR from perfect but he is what is needed at this time to get Washington back to working for the people. When you saw both sides pulling against him in the primaries that was a sighn that he is what is needed. Do I wish he would tweet less? Yes. Do I wish he would stop the petty verbal sparring? Yes. I refuse to believe that johnhough relly buy most of what democrats are pushing. I would bet my left testicle that if a Muslim family moved next door to you you would hate it. I know you won’t admit it but I know. I hear liberals all day spout the party line until it’s next door to them. My guess is if we didn’t have the 2 party system that makes you take the wrong side on many issues we would see a different johnhough.. I’m big enough to admit I am not a gun nut, closing loopholes would not bother me. Abortion. Life of the mother at risk? Rape? Day after pill(duh)? I’ll allow it. I can see how people would disagree but that’s how I see it.
John tell me something you disagree with that dems are all over. I just have a hard time thinking people are that different in this country.

Totally open borders is ridiculous IMO. Need to have secure borders but we also need to make it easier to become a citizen. Needs to be an incentive outside of living in the US. It’s incredibly difficult to gain citizenship here. That’s why people just come illegally. Easier and cheaper.

I’m not for socialism. Socialist candidates you’re seeing from the Democratic Party are reactionary to the tea party types IMO. Part of the country going further to the extremes and more polarized. Universal healthcare is not socialism. I certainly don’t think we should have just government healthcare. I’m a big fan of having a strong “free” government backbone system and an auxiliary private system as well. I’m biased because I had a great time studying abroad in Spain but their healthcare system is awesome. Government and private hospitals. If you can afford it and have no patience you can go to private, if not, government is always there. My host family has private insurance and host Mom told me a story one time and the beginning was “my foot had been bothering me for a few days so I needed to go the doctor, my biggest decision was whether or not I felt like paying.” That’s just incredible to hear. When I talk to Europeans about our healthcare they are just in shock about how we do it and most admit that they are grateful to not be from here. That’s embarrassing.

I have coworkers that are Muslim and it couldn’t mean less to me. Granted, I don’t know what the women’s hair looks like but otherwise it has no affect on me. Religion and character are separate things. There may be correlation but there is minimal causation.

My stance on abortion is pretty progressive. I think 4 weeks and earlier is fair game. I have never taken an embryology class but as a gut feeling I think whenever the embryo develops a heart rate should be around the cut off. Again, my views an abortion are based off of the fact that political views and policy suggestions based on 2,000 year old literature should not be taken seriously. We should look at it objectively. For every story of an unexpected pregnancy turning out to be a great child/adult, there are thousands of failures. Abortion should be safe, legal and rare. It would save this country a lot of money. And I mean A LOT.

I do actually line up with Democrats on most issues. Some of the absurd SJW type stuff is ridiculous to me, but the social policy is what has me voting D. This country will succeed regardless of whatever fiscal policy we have.

Thanks for asking and having a mature discussion. My remarks about religion are a little rough around the edges because it not the most articulate writer, but I appreciate you asking me straight up and not attacking. Very refreshing. I think if you and I were to talk politics in real life we would come to an agreement on most things. And that’s another thing. People don’t talk face to face about hard topics anymore. It’s all through social media or behind a keyboard. Nobody wants to be seen as weak or something like that for freaking compromising.

That literature from 2,000 years is amazingly accurate... I respect the author more than I could ever describe right here...

And science can't tell me that an unborn child is not a child... I've seen & heard the heartbeat of my children on an ultrasound...I've felt their tiny kicks from their mother's womb...nobody can tell me that it's a women's health issue at that point... It's a baby issue & to try to abort that is nothing short of murder...

What you’re describing is Late term abortion. I would say less than 500 people in the country are in favor of that.

Name one thing Bill Clinton ever did that garnered him a pat on the back from the opposition party? Same for Trump. That’s ridiculous. Politicians are all about getting and keeping power, I feel that a lot of good people are put at odds needlessly and it drags us down as a society. It also has a synergistic effect of running many to the fringes and also it sometimes compromises us all to either adopt of stay silent on stances we don’t really agree with because not doing so we fear weakens our main advocates for another issue we are passionate about. Although tempting, this is ultimately counterproductive. There has to be a better way, some type of reform to somehow right the ship.

Yep. News headlines shouldn’t be “big victory for the republican/Democratic Party today” it should be “big victory for the American people”

Just so you know I was an observer to a situation where a medical patient made an accusation against a health care provider

Police and authorities involved with the medical provider getting into serous trouble

Since it involved people i had some influence it was decided the claims were not credible as the story made no sense and all of it did not line up as we investigated and decided the medications were causing hallucinations

Be aware one day you may be falsely accused and not be so lucky

Getting back on topic.

I feel like Dr. Ford's allegations deserve being heard out. I don't find the "why didn't they do anything 30 years ago?!" arguments in any way compelling. The majority of assaults are not reported:

Crime Reports
  • Rape is the most under-reported crime; 63% of sexual assaults are not reported to police (m)
  • The prevalence of false reporting is low between 2% and 10%. For example, a study of eight U.S. communities, which included 2,059 cases of sexual assault, found a 7.1% rate of false reports (i). A study of 136 sexual assault cases in Boston found a 5.9% rate of false reports (h). Researchers studied 812 reports of sexual assault from 2000-2003 and found a 2.1% rate of false reports (g).
Source

There are lots of reasons not to report. People not believing you, being believed but not having enough evidence to charge, charging and not convicting, etc. Very very few rapes result in convictions (and the burden of proof should still be high in a criminal court).

It certainly seems like Kavanaugh is willing to lie at the drop of a hat. He said that no one has every done a more thorough search than President Trump which is laughable. He says he's never been black out drunk which doesn't jive very well from his friend's recollections of their time in prep school. He says that he didn't have sex while he was a student which, may or may not be true, but doesn't seem like it.

I tend to think that he did and that his nomination will be pulled unless something weird happens.

The only item that gives me real pause in his favor is the timing of the allegations (not that it was only when he was famous but waiting until the hearings were done). However, I think I'm willing to grant a victim some leeway in this sort of situation. If the alleged assaulter has never faced any consequences, I'd probably time it to maximize the damage. It's the only punishment Kavanaugh will ever receive for this (if it happened) so why not make it count.

Well I'm a moderate and not affiliated with EITHER party and frankly I don't see how anyone who seriously considers themselves an American first could be. Both the Dems and Reps are morally bankrupt and act in the interest of their party/donners first with America in general a distant 2nd.

I don't think he should withdraw. Right now this is simply an accusation. I'd like to hear her say it under oath and I'd like to hear him deny it under oath. Unfortunately people feel absolutely free to lie their asses off otherwise.

Let's assume that they both do that. Then bring on the lie detector (this is NOT a criminal case, so that's not out of bounds). If Ford passes, I'd vote him down. As I've said before, it doesn't matter if he's conservative or liberal.. the President gets to pick that. The Senate gets to advise and consent which I take to mean that they make sure the person is appropriate (experience and morals) for the SCOTUS. That's a high level lifetime position and the folks that sit on it should be of high character as well

As for the 2nd woman. Don't care. Let's assume that everything she says is true. So he whipped out his dick and waved it at her in a college party with a bunch of people there. Not his finest moment for sure, but no harm no foul. Youngsters do stupid stuff while drunk.

BUT if you are 17 and you and your drunk friend lure a 15 year old girl into a room, trap her there, pin her down and try to take her clothes off. That's a BIG deal. That's not a youthful prank. And remember, according to Ford, they didn't change their minds, she simply fought hard enough to get away. That's a serious crime that he just happened to get away with. Does he need to go to jail? Nope. No rape and this was indeed a long time ago (not to mention proving it would be very difficult). Does it need to ruin his life? Nope. Same argument AND the guy has been living clean for a long time. Does he need to get a seat on the SCOTUS? I'd say no. Again, there are PLENTY of men and women who (contrary to what FOXNEWS is telling you) who have managed to get through life w/o attempting to rape a 15 year old girl or anyone else for that matter. President Trump can pick another conservative and you won't hear another word out of me.

That's interesting, so you contend that one becomes a conservative by succumbing to the weight of the world rather than through carefully considered beliefs and principals. I actually agree with you. Most of my conservative friends, which would be most of my friends in general, didn't begin to identify as conservative until they realized they had to share the world with people who weren't just like them. There's something about fairness and equality that conservative people, in general, just don't like.

THIS a 1000x. If you took the average conservative and the average liberal and sat them together over drinks to talk values and beliefs, they'd probably agree on 70% of things. You know the things AMERICANS believe in. As a really good American President said, if someone agrees with you 70% of the time, that person is your friend, not your enemy. Too bad Reagan isn't here now, he was a uniter not a divider and knew how to work on both sides of the aisle to move the country forward.

Well I'm a moderate and not affiliated with EITHER party and frankly I don't see how anyone who seriously considers themselves an American first could be.

I take some exception to this. I am not a registered Democrat but am much more a Democrat than a Republican and will likely vote for only Democrats in November. This isn't because of playing teams (in my mind); it's because my viewpoints are best represented by the Democratic party and not the Republicans. I don't agree with Dems on everything. I think they fight too hard on gun control and can be stupid on trade policy sometimes but on the whole they're who I align with.

I don't know if I'd vote for a Republican over a Democrat if the Dem in question were morally reprehensible but held my views and the Republican was the opposite.

But I support these ideals because I think they're what's best for the country (they're certainly not what's best for me individually). I don't think that having a loose party affiliation disqualifies me from being a "real American".
