Sitting at a resort town restaurant

was told it was an hour wait

lack of wait staff and cooks

Every time I hear that I have to wait this it turns me off to restaurants

At this point I prefer to cook my own food and eat it

My grown children and family along with many people are saying the same thing about quality of restaurant service

I know we are coming out of the pandemic but the poor service is concerning

Nobody wants to work. That’s how it is everywhere. If you don’t want to wait then cook at home. Simple as that.

Yeah it’s a legit issue

my buddy just closed one because staffing it with quality/dependable employees wasn’t possible at this time…… well in conjunction with the food costs fluctuating and availability

it’s nuts

but I don’t blame you, I prefer to cook my own food anyway…… disappointed with restaurant food more times than not

I've seen similar or longer wait times in MN plenty of times during a normal year. Don't forget it's the 4th of July weekend too.

We’re gonna feel the covid supply chain disruption for at least another year
True but things are starting to work themselves out a bit. Building supplies and lumber futures are starting to creep down ever so slowly. Now the US was always predicted to have a shortage of truck drivers, and covid made that a lot worse, but the supply has started to respond.

Give it 2 more weeks
For those who think this problem is going to magically disappear just because unemployment benefits will decrease are sadly mistaken. The hospitality industry was struggling with staffing shortages prior to the pandemic. Wage inflation had hit this sector years ago. They then laid off HUGE amounts of the workforce at the same time that higher paying employers (I.e. walmart, target, amazon) were hiring 100’s of thousands and offered benefits (any is better than none) and a better quality of life (regular predictable hours, vacation, etc).

The restaurant industry in the US is about to go through a huge transformation. Increasing efficiency and raising pay will be the only options many have to survive. WIll be interesting to see where it all ends up, but I’d be highly surprised If we were to ever again see a normal dining experience anything like what we enjoyed pre-2020.

Lumber took a 40% slide as of two weeks ago. It’ll take East Asia vaccinating their people and the removal of the us government unemployment monthly check

My wife and I own a small personalization and gift store. In the past three months I haven't been able to find just about any comfort colors shirts in standard sizes and Richardson style Trucker caps are non existent also. Gildan, which owns comfort colors, "hopes" that they will begin to see supplies start hitting the pipeline mid 4th quarter.

Thanks Kyle. Said restaurants would probably have some management openings so you can fix the issues.

I am actually enjoying the chaos because from this chaos will come order

The swing to conservative values is going to be brutal and not without a lot of pain to liberals and conservatives

but in the end a new Reagan is going to emerge from the fog of this war pitting evil versus good and I leave it to the reader to figure it out

Also think people aren’t willing to go deal with absolute ridiculous way customers treat hospitality employees and the general lack of care about it from management and the bending over backwards to take care of every customer no matter how unreasonable they are.

Hospitality work is quickly becoming one of those jobs that “Americans won’t do” because they don’t get paid enough to be treated like shit from entitled customers.

It’s time for the era of “the customer is always right” to come to a close.

Good luck with that. Your competition will eat you alive.

you should open a restaurant and experiment with that

Eating at home during the early months of the pandemic really made us realize that we enjoy eating at home much more.

we rarely or almost never get takeout and only eat at the best restaurants a couple times a year.

we are eating better food at a fraction of the cost and saving a ton of money

Doing the dishes though…..

You nailed it. I spent 20 years in the restaurant business, eventually becoming a managing partner for a casual dining franchisee. I left 10 years ago because I was starting to struggle greatly with finding decent management talent.

For the past 10 years I’ve been working for a restaurant technology company. We have been as busy the past 6 months as at any point in the last 10 years. What do we sell?

Software that uses data to write schedules and generate orders programmatically, allowing owners to have less talented, less experienced, lower paid managers, Self-order kiosks that are replacing cashiers, and drive thru systems with AI driven voice recognition software.

$15 an hour may happen in the restaurant industry, but staff will be replaced by technology to the tune of 30-50% staff reductions in quick service and fast casual segments.

And every bit of that is what will be needed to evolve that business model to continue being viable. Will also be interesting to see how food delivery (assuming the third party model works long term) effects the industry.

My team implements software working directly with some of the biggest brands in the world. We currently have 5 projects in flight for ghost kitchens for the sole purpose of preparing food for 3rd party delivery.

Since this is already an “old man yells at cloud” thread, can I just pile on and say I ordered 2 Greek chicken salads from a Greenville restaurant and it cost $35!!! No drinks, did not include the tip - $35. Not sure what it would cost if they start paying $15 an hour.

I will agree with the premise that how you treat the most vulnerable people that you come in contact with is a clear measure of your character

last night on a $50 dinner bill I left a $25 tip and thanked the server for showing up

I hugged the hostess and offered her a tip for getting my family in the restaurant in a short time instead of the original two hour wait

I was nice and understanding the whole time never insulting the people who are working under difficult circumstances

I personally always thank the people who are the janitors and people who do services like cleaning bathrooms as they are truly good people deserving respect

just because you flash cash or drop names means nothing to me

it’s the heart and soul of the person

learn to see that and you will be a better person
That’s what I promised my mom I would do as she was on her death bed

in life as we age get better not bitter

The level of give a crap is much lower now than it was prepandemic.

we saw it in Orlando a few weeks ago. Tourist areas are pretty bad. It is almost as if they think we should all just be happy they are open.

tables arent bussed, floors a mess, food orders kinda right, refills hopeful, etc. this is a management issue. But there is a huge difference now.

The whole world is worse off for the governance we have had over the last 6 months to a year

unless turned around the world will be a worse place for my family going forward

I pray every day for an intervention of enlightenment

stop the division and hate

The Walker Parks saga and trolling is one small example
