I haven't been scouting very much this cycle. Last go around left a bad taste in all of our mouths. This cycle, I've decided to only dive deep when guys commit. Fortunately, we got a few of those this weekend. Want to talk about the WRs for now since the OL class is still coming together and I think it's more useful to look at that position as a whole unit.
Na'eem Burroughs, WR, FL
I've really liked this kid since we first offered. Decidedly different skillset than that of TJ Moore or Bryant Wesco. His game is actually pretty similar to Antonio Williams. I like that you can move him inside/outside without any drop-off. He makes matching up hard for defenses in a similar way to AW. If you play him inside, most nickels aren't fast enough to stay on top of him if he runs a fade. Yet he's slippery enough (with great feet and balance) that the free release awarded to slot receivers makes it challenging to stay with him underneath. Hands look great. Impressed by his footwork and his lower body fluidity. Just a really tough matchup. Think his next steps are going to be focusing on becoming more physically prepared so that the outside at the next level becomes an option.
To put him in context: I think Wesco/Moore were better coming out of high school, but he is about where AW was coming out of HS in my estimation.
Connor Salmin, WR, VA
This is more of your typical deep ball threat. Kid can definitely run. I think he tracks the ball pretty well too. I'd like to see him develop a bit more in terms of "playing above the rim". Would like him to attack the football more. Eye test makes me think he's decently filled out for his frame, so I wouldn't expect a ton of physical development to be required. Good hands. You see guys like Salmin plenty of times. He has all the pre-requisites. Just comes down to the type of nuance and precision he can develop to help unlock his speed. I like this kid down the line. He shouldn't be in a rush to get on the field. Just develop his technique and footwork. If he becomes a plus route runner, he will play a lot for us.
Kind of hard to place Salmin. Him and Burroughs complement each other well. I don't think he's where Wesco was out of HS in terms of nuance nor where TJ was in terms of attacking the football and body control. I do think he's someone to be excited about, though. I'll put it like this -- this is another take that is up to our standard. I have not always thought that about some of the WRs we sign.
