South Carolina has reopened

We have dinner reservations at our favorite local restaurant tomorrow night. Tonight is their first night open. It's a very small place. Maybe 14 tables at full capacity. We expect no more than 6-8 tables at a time tomorrow evening.

Looks like gyms, salons and barbershops will open the 18th in limited capacity. Don’t know what limited capacity entails but I got my haircut appointment for the 19th! Ready to cut this curly bush off the top of my head.

Stay home then. No one is forcing you to leave your house
the problem is not me. the problem is my 92 y.o. grandmother. she has no choice but to leave the house to get groceries doctor visits, etc. and for that matter my father is 72 and mother is 70 and both have prexisting conditions.

but i get it. they're old so we don't care about them anymore. at least it's not your family, right?

Groceries can be delivered.. doctor visit can be virtual

right, but the ER visit for out of control blood pressure this past week could not be done over the internet. so there's that.

again, i get it. they're old so let's just hope they die quickly and not all drawn out with difficulty breathing and choking on their own fluids. some things are more important than the ones you love, like eating inside a restaurant.

So, what would be your solution to the ‘crisis’ our country currently faces? I ask because from my viewpoint, I see millions out of work since March and our freedom greatly diminished. With all the changes government has made, the numbers are still climbing. A vaccine is coming no sooner than the new year. We are testing exponentially more people now than even a few weeks ago. I’m not trying to be heartless but elderly and immune-compromised people tend to die from things that younger people can survive. I don’t know what the right answer is on how to best handle this situation. I do think, however, believe that destroying our economy and doubling our national debt is not the best path.

You’re letting your personal situation cloud things. Which is natural and I get.

great plan. literally no state with worse testing out there, but by all means.
Feel free to stay inside if i

If I was 92 years old I sure wouldn't expect everyone to put their lives on hold to try to buy me a few more years. As a matter of fact I wouldn't want to waste what time I have left hiding in my house. I would want to live my life. And do you think you are the only one with older parents and grandparents? What a self righteous statement that was from you. I have older parents with comorbidities and we would rather spend time together and live life than sit at home watching life pass by.

Not trying to be a smart ass but why don’t you do the grocery shopping for them and carry them to the ER. Do you expect the ER to be busier because the governor has open the state?

My Mom is 90, my Dad 93.

He said at lunch yesterday that if they dont open this country back up the Great Depression he was born into will be a cakewalk to what's coming.

He is more worried about the future for his grand children than he is about himself.

Sorry I was snotty with you. But both my grandfathers died before 80, one grandmother before 60 and another is in her early 80's in a nursing home and barely knows anyone. I wish they were all still around to help.

I understand the folks that want to reopen and get on with their lives ...I really do AND I even somewhat agree but the cavalier attitude some have ... I just don’t get. I have to assume that those people who have a nonchalant attitude about reopening are just bad at math.

Supporters of the “herd immunity” approach to this virus estimate that this would mean 60-70% of the US population would get infected with CV19. If you go conservative, 60% of 350M people is 210M. If you use the mortality rate from the Stanford study(a very positive study) of .14% that means 294,000 people will die.

Since we see folks throw out “99% of people recover and are fine”, ok let’s assume again 210M people (60% of the population, still being conservative) get sick with CV19. If the mortality rate is 1%, that means 2,100,000 will die.

100% this.

My grandma is 96, and 4 weeks ago we took her out of her senior housing and moved her in with my parents. She basically said if she gets it she gets it, but she’s not gonna spend the rest of her life completely isolated from everyone she loves. She sees her great grandkids and her grandkids regularly. We try to wash down before we see her, but she accepted the risk.

She’s had a great life, and she realizes the way the circle of life works. She absolutely wants what’s best for everyone else and will enjoy what’s left of her life but doesn’t think her health should be prioritized over the greater good of everyone’s future.

I have to say I really haven't missed going to restaurants as much as I thought I would. I believe moving foward we will continue to cook and eat more at home.

What I don't understand - and I promise I'm not being a smart-ass - is if your parents are in their 90s and the state is closed down - and you think it's helping them..... How does re-opening affect them unless someone makes them go out? Who has been taking them stuff while we're closed? I mean - if they're not going out - why do they have to start going out?

I'm sorry but I just don't get that.

My mom is 85 and had a car accident 10 years ago that injured her lungs so she would definitely be high risk. We take her groceries and wipe the bags & leave them on her front porch. Stand back and I put a chair in yard and talk for a few minutes. Would love to give her a hug but trying to be smart.

But why does reopening the state affect my mom?

Seriously I think some people (not saying you) have the attitude "if shutting down is what my mom needs to do then dang it everyone needs to be shut down". That's just bs.

People just need some brains and personal responsibility.

dude, Imagine back in the day when you got chicken pox. No biggie, everyone gets it early (I don't know current vaccine status, so go with here)

then one day I get the common flu. Happened many times in my life. Then the old folks get the common flu, some live and some die.

unless you want to go back to the year 1500, I would suggest get on board. The stat that did it for me was that over 50% of the deaths in the US because of Chinese Wet Market Virus are recorded in

1) NEW YORK
2) NEW JERSEY

Why do we have to shut down our lives because of NY/NJ problems?

hate to be blunt, but that's it and now Imma gonna smoke one holmes

My mother is 77 feels the same way. People at peace understand this.

Oh you want to use scripture. That's fine. Are you going to speak for all those poor and needy that have been created by the measures enacted to try to save your and my parents and grandparents? You going to speak for those who are having a hard time feeding their family?

But you keep up that self righteous indignation.

the problem is that SC (nor any other state) has enough testing to know a dang thing outside of maybe RI and a few other small states.

currently, SC has tested about 1.7% of the state. those models that everyone was going crazy about being wrong were wrong because they had almost no data to go on. i will say it again so everyone understands me, i want the country to reopen just like everyone else. i want the states to have data that says it is OK to do so. a plan for what happens if the rates and deaths go back up. it's more about nobody doing a dang thing and expecting the virus to get better all on its own.

the reason SK, Germany, and others have had success is because of ability to get tests completed in a timely manner. they had/have plans about when they will reopen what and how that will happen. they have plans about quarantining areas that get hit hard after the reopening. currently the US has almost NONE of this. for almost anywhere.

in my opinion, it's not the quarantine that has people going crazy it's not having a plan to get out of it or having any confidence that once we get out we will be able to maintain it.

you're right. those that have lost their job likely do not have older family members that they're worried about.

the reason SK, Germany, and others have had

Cut off part of the quote.....but both SK and Germany are now seeing an increase again. Testing isn’t going to prevent the spread, nor slow it down.

Where in SC are your folks located? If they truly need some help with grocery deliveries, Im sure we have people on this board that will come together and help. I will, if they are local to me

I would venture to bet that the millions out of work that you say over half are service industry/hospitality and are currently making more than when everything was open.

We aren't testing exponentially more in SC. We've tested 85K That's terrible by any standard.

We need to open and quickly but our Governor has just opened things on a whim and randomly. The whole point was to control the spread and protect the hospitals from overcrowding.

Judging by the way everyone has jumped at the chance to get out without any safety measures I sure hope you are right because we will find out in the next couple of weeks for sure.

Before you say it.. I think President Trump's 3 phase plan actually made a ton of sense and should have been the guide. We currently might have been in phase 1 right now based off of 14 day counts.

My biggest problem with this whole thing is people making more not working than working.

That should never have happened.

Someday this country is going to pay a terrible price for some of this stupidity.

Testing is not a problem. I own a company in scar and all of my employees have been tested. My dad has 165 employees across the Southeast (mainly scar and NC) and he is doing the same. Got a test with no symptoms last week

I 1000% agree. I have a sister in law that is a hairdresser and she has made out like a bandit and has bragged about it.

She is getting like $800 a week in unemployment and got the PPP loan.

We aren't testing exponentially more in SC. We've tested 85K That's terrible by any standard. I will tell you that the hospital I work at is testing every person that comes there with any symptom that could be Covid. Results are available within < 4 hours. A far cry from 4+ days I saw when this first began. If you are seeking mass testing for our entire population, good luck.

We need to open and quickly but our Governor has just opened things on a whim and randomly. The whole point was to control the spread and protect the hospitals from overcrowding. I will agree that many decisions made by our government are curious at best. Does that surprise anyone given the track record of government period. Anyone who visited a Lowe’s or Home Depot within the last 2 months could see that decisions on closing were not solely out of a concern for public safety.

Judging by the way everyone has jumped at the chance to get out without any safety measures I sure hope you are right because we will find out in the next couple of weeks for sure. Agreed but of course I have no say in these decisions so it’s not me you should be worried about being right.
