Stephen Smith says Trump is winning the NFL Anthem Debate

Masterful job changing the conversation from racial inequality to patriotism.

Exactly what has happened. Point of protests in the rear view mirror.

Smart move on Trump's part in a way, but it's definitely caused collateral damage. And guess what's not being focused on right now? Everything else a POTUS should be focusing on.

Interesting times right now without a clear resolution. Brace yourselves...it's only going to get crazier.

...a different point of view would be that the "racial inequality" protesters could have changed that narrative while EVERYBODY was talking about the protests. They didn't. They lost momentum and allowed it be about the anthem/ flag.

They could have come out and said something to the effect of... "We recognize that some are offended by the kneeling during the anthem and that is not our intention. We only intended to draw attention to racial inequality in America. Now that has been accomplished we, in a show of good faith, are calling the protests off and invite everyone into a discussion about racial inequality..."

The problems are there is no "spokesman" for the racial inequality group and (as I believe) no real desire to seek unity. BOTH Sides are getting what they wanted out of it, that is an energized voting base. There is also no "conference room" to have the two parties sit down and negotiate peace, this will be played out in the court of public opinion (media). As soon as there is another questionable police stop / cell phone video/ cop shooting, etc. We're back to square one.

Trump has won the debate because NFL viewership is down and his rating are up 3-4% (Rasmussen polls).

Can't believe we have 3 more years of daily gaffs and scandals in the White House, and there are actually people that think he's doing a great job. From a neutral point of view it just blows my mind.

I remember a year or so ago our president didn't call people SOBs, didn't say he could grab women by the p***y, and didn't mock POWs. Now we have one that does and people are celebrating.

Sad state of affairs

Your first paragraph could have been said for any president in the last 20 years.

I also guarantee that the second paragraph is not far off from almost any politician. I am not saying that stuff is OK just saying Trump is not the only one. DC is dirty and it sadens me.

When was the last president who had a new scandal or totally out of line remark practically every day?

The question is what will actually stick? Does anyone actually think Teflon Don will actually be impeached for any of it? At most he will lose a staff member.

Obama in his first year. I still cant believe he had a beer summit

How about the Worldwide apology tour? Or the dumbass gifts he gave to the other world leaders.

They all do stupid things. But I wonder what most are actually saying are the dumb things Trump has done.

Telling the Warriors they cant come to the WH
Calling NFL protestors SOBs
Yeah he tweets a ton and some pretty dumb but what do those actually matter?

How about his speech to the UN?

A beer summit? Oh, you mean a meeting with small businesses? Can't believe he did that!

The two other things you mentioned were attempts by BO to improve the USs reputation in the world.

I don't think any of those thing are remotely comparable to the obvious laundry list of things Trump did/does for his own personal gain, and or no discernible reason.

What is sad to me is just how divided this country is currently. After all we have been through as a nation, this is where we are right now. It's more than just a debate about free speech or civil rights. There is just so much hatred out there among our people.
And I find all of it absolutely disgusting. Even our "sports" are divided now. It's a real drag...

He distracts the slow witted left with tweets all the while he is turning this country around. Of course it isn’t that hard with the slow witted left being led by Pelosi, Schumer, and Warren. That is the real sad state of affairs. 8 years of Barrack and the self correction has begun. Try 7 more years so you might want to find a comfortable rock to go hide under. The winning is not gonna be easy to run from.

Your comments about the "slow witted left" read like elegant prose. Please share more with us.

Its a sad state of affairs for sure. Even if you are a dye in the wool republican, there's no way to escape the fact that a Hollywood celebrity is making a mess of the executive branch. I worry if Kelly or Tillerson is fired.

I can't believe there are people still this dumb who think Trump is playing four dimensional chess or some shit. The reason for his tweets is simple: he's an idiot with a fragile ego who acts solely out of impulse.

I have been boycotting the NFL ..... for the last 3 years, not because of some protest but rather because it sucks. It’s a poor mans brand of football, it’s boring, the live environments are unoriginal and lack tradition, and the stadiums are boring. Sunday’s are for college replays.

First NFL game I have watched in 3 years was DW4s first start. Since then I have only watched highlights.

NFL sucks

4D chess? No, but the fact remains he is getting this economy moving in a positive direction and that will fix a lot of this countries issues. The left needs to reign in thie beast Sanders helped create and get back to governing. Right ow the far left has moderate Democrats running scared and quite frankly the lack of vision and message isn’t helping either. It’s comical how easily the left gets distracted with his tweets. If he can get rid of some of the worthless leadership on the right he can really get this country moving along but it really starts with the economy, tax reform, and eventually a full repeal of the ACA.

I’m not a trump supporter, I did hate Hillary, for many reasons. Agreed that trump should probably have his twitter access taken away, that would probably smooth a lot of things over.

But let me ask you guys this, when was the last time a president faced this much of an uphill battle with the media? Like him or not, every media outlet is looking for the next thing to bash him on. He doesn’t help himself with his outbursts, but some of the stuff they bring up on a daily basis gets old.

Furthermore, if the country, or Washington DC doesn’t like it, then they need to take a good long hard look in the mirror. Because the reason he was elected was due to dissatisfaction with the current system. It’s a completely corrupt disaster, and that’s only the stuff we know about. Hopefully this 4 years stands as a turning point for the system that’s in place.

Our President is engaged in Twitter troll wars with NFL players and racial tension is still prevalent. Crazy times....I'm hopeful for days where both are fully in the rear view mirror.

MAGA is literally winning at everything.
It's only going to get better, when he wins again in 3 years. I predicted very early in the race, he'd win this time and people laughed

Trump has pulled the curtain back on a lot of things. The media and the dems and reps the way they control this country. There was no problems as long as you went along with the media and the libs got their way bashing this country, God and family. The moment somebody stood up to that nonsense look what happened.

Ahh you obviously have forgotten the beer summit. It doesnt surprise me. Maybe the left actually took that event and tried to turn it into some Nobel peace prize moment.

No there were no businesses involved. Just a white cop doing his job and a black professor who got his feelings hurt. And of course the professors buddy old BO creating a racial issue that previously was not there.

I suppose your definition of turning the country around includes edging closer to war, tax breaks for the wealthy, going backwards in general civil rights, and a total lack of professionalism?

Women's rights have gone from "the right to abort" to "the government must pay for abortions and contraceptives". Have an abortion every month, just don't ask me to pay for. But that makes me "anti-woman"?

MLK would not recognize the BLM type movement. I think he would be saddened at the direction things have gone.

The sooner that lunatic is no longer in charge of this country, the better of we’ll all be. I really have sympathy for those unable to see Trump for what he really is. If you’re losing your kids because of his big f’ing mouth maybe some people will change their tune. The right and left are unhinged, the centrists must hold the middle.

You mean the tax reform that will save the average family making less than $90,000 "almost $1,000 a year." Did you watch Trump's speech introducing his tax plan? Even the family he was using as props looked shocked that this incredible tax plan was only going to put less than $1,000 in their pocket.

All while lowering the top tax bracket by 4.6% (39.6 to 35%) for the wealthiest.

And this is while proclaiming to be the President for the forgotten Americans.

All while lowering the top tax bracket by 4.6% (39.6 to 35%) for the wealthiest. This would put over $18,000 back in the pocket for even those in the lowest end of that bracket.

If you give a tax cut, that means that you have to cut taxes of those that actually pay them.

Trump went bankrupt in the casino business. However, since he shifted the debt to his investors he is lauded as a great businessman.

Think about that people. The only thing that he's ever been successful with was reality TV. Well, now we can add several other endeavors (such as selling Chinese hats) now that he's the President.

He's a conman, and it's not up for debate. Hey everyone, when's Mexico gonna break ground on that wall they owe us? LOL

Unfortunately, his tax plan is of disproportionate benefit to wealthy individuals like Trump.

“Trump’s return shows that he’s pushing tax changes that benefit multimillionaire heirs like him, not the middle class,” said Lily Batchelder, a tax law professor at New York University and former majority chief tax counsel for the Senate Finance Committee. “His proposal to repeal the A.M.T. would have slashed his own tax burden by $31 million [in 2005 (the one recent year we have information on Trump's taxes)], and his income tax rate would be lower than the average rate paid by families earning $75,000 to $100,000.”

On the irony, here is Trump - insinuating that his plan would hurt him - discussing his tax plan:

"First and foremost, our tax system should benefit loyal, hardworking Americans and their families. (Applause.) That is why tax reform must dramatically simplify the tax code, eliminate special interest loopholes -- and I'm speaking against myself when I do this, I have to tell you. And I might be speaking against Mr. Cook, and we're both okay with it, is that right? It's crazy. We're speaking -- maybe we shouldn't be doing this, you know?" said Donald Trump.

And thank goodness Trump plans to repeal the Estate Tax for all those honest, hard-working Americans...

I wonder how many people here know that the first $5.5M of an estate is already exempt from federal taxation. What Trump is really doing is avoiding taxation of estates like his that are worth $100Ms to $Billions from any federal taxation.
