******TI Official State of the Union In-Speech Thread

I don't get why you'd think a late term abortion is any more monstrous than any other abortion is what I'm saying.

I think all abortion is monstrous. I get your premise that If I think it's a life at conception, how is it any more or less of a life at 23 weeks. I see both as equal in most respect. However, there's something about the crushing and dismembering of a baby in the womb that requires a certain level of evil that is hard for me to rationally react to. I'd like to get rid of all of it but we live in a country where roughly 45-50% of people think having an abortion is the right of a woman. I think this is pure idiocy but I can't just overrule all those people. I am not king. So what's required is at least trying to peel back as much as we can from this abomination. You're smart enough to know this. You just seem to want to be difficult about this and I can't understand why. When we have divergent views on a subject, some negotiation and even compromise is required. If it were up to me, I'd get rid of all abortions in America. It's not up to me though and as such, my hope is to at least find a way to reduce them to the absolute minimum and hopefully one day people will come to their senses and see what we're doing.

How do you feel about requiring medically accurate sex education and providing free birth control? Those things would help drive that number down.

My earnest stance is that I think a woman should have the right to choose but that we should do what we can to make it so that choice doesn't need to be made. That means having medically accurate sex education in public school and getting rid of abstinence only sex ed. I also think all effective birth control should be "free" to anyone who wants it, especially long acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs, eg IUDs, the implant). It saves money for all of us overall and also reduces the number of abortions.

Abortions are not something that I'm comfortable with. To me, a fetus is something that's more than a tumor but less than a person so drawing a line is very difficult. They're also an invasive procedure. So I'd like to limit the need for them as much as possible. It'd be great if we had no elective abortions but the way to get there isn't through criminalizing them (and never will be).

I agree. I fall into the camp of pro choice, but I'm certainly not comfortable with abortions either. IMHO, if it comes down to that, a LOT of shiit has gone wrong already.

You are off a bit on your percentages. Roughly 70% of all Americans think that abortion should be legal in some cases, so only about 30% of folks agree with you that there is no case for abortion at all. BUT that number isn't completely accurate as the way the question is asked causes support (or not to vary wildly). Here's a pretty interesting article that talks about the nuances of American's attitudes. It ranges from about 20% support for 3rd trimester under any circumstance to about 70% support for some form in certain circumstances.
