Welp I'm learing that "86" means kill to a lot of people. I legit thought it just always meant to get rid of or stop something, never knew it meant killing.
In food service it meant take an item off the menu because it was sold out. That's the only reference I've ever used.

Just for some more data points. I'm 40, haven't heard it used that way, my wife 39, also not heard it that way.
Hung out tonight with about a dozen friends ranging from mid 50s to early 30s, no one had ever heard it to mean "kill". Almost everyone said that they've just heard it when referenced to a restaurant running out of food and to remove it from a menu.
So apparently I've been where a whole lot of others have been. And none of this is to say that what he did wasn't dumb, of course it was. I just never would have interpreted it a "hit request" as many seem to want it to
