You can't make this up. High ranking Trump admin officials accidentally added Atlantic Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg to a group chat where they were discussing the airstrikes about to be launched against Houthis in Yemen. Talk about opsec! Doing this kind of stuff on a group chat app (Signal) is just insane to me and complete malpractice.

I read this whole article today and couldn't believe this actually happened. Yall heard the leaked JD Vance audio yet?

Hopefully he is held accountable and fired.

Oh you mean like JD Vance, Pete Hegseth, John Ratcliffe, Tulsi Gabbard, Michael Waltz, Stephan Miller, Rubio and others? Should be but wont
Yes, they should all be impeached for committing a federal crime. what they did and are doing just with this is a major scandal and absolute lunacy

Hegseth can't keep his pants on and can't keep a group text private.
They shouldn't be on a group messaging app period, much less recklessly adding reporters to the chat.

Democats can have your win here.

Piss poor. Put soldiers at unnecessary risk. Incompetence gets people killed.

Incompetence goes away with accountability. Hopefully the offender is held accountable. If that is Hegeseth so be it.
The only people we should be asking of winning or losing are the American people. It’s not a political party competition. The American people lose when we have dipshits in positions of power. This is one of many examples of Trump putting unqualified dipshits in a position of power simply as a reward for loyalty

There's nobody winning here. This is what happens when you appoint unqualified yes men to positions of power.

Don’t know the details, but based on the reporter racing to put out the story of an innocent yet concerning mistake he probably crapped on his future opportunities.

To me and now that is just me I would use the mistake to create some goodwill with the key person in that group I needed information from or as unnamed sources go.

Instead the guy wanted to make immediate points being on the side of resistance and probably lost the GOLDEN KEY to a future scoop.

But what do I know about negotiating and building leverage.

elect the clowns, get the circus. what an embarrassment (ongoing).

Several Defense Department officials expressed shock that Mr. Hegseth had put American war plans into a commercial chat group. They said that having this type of conversation in a Signal chat group itself could be a violation of the Espionage Act, a law covering the handling of sensitive information.

Revealing operational war plans before planned strikes could also put American troops directly into harm’s way, the officials said. They spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive national security matter.

Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island, the ranking Democrat on the Armed Services Committee, said that the “story represents one of the most egregious failures of operational security and common sense I have ever seen.”

“Military operations need to be handled with utmost discretion and precision, using approved secure lines of communication, because American lives are on the line,” he added.

Any reporter would absolutely lose their job if they didn't report something this big. Would also absolutely not be their sole decision. (though in this case he is the editor in chief I believe)

Fear not, the crusade against DEI is more important than these intelligence blunders!!

Hegseth is smarter than this and should be embarrassed. Don't whine about DEI and then shirk any responsbility for your own mistakes.

You'd call it an innocent mistake if it happened under Biden? Doubtful.

this is A. Embarrassing and B. WTF is this stuff going out over text vs secure email which can be locked down to only a d further compartmentalized beyond that. Ive never done it but i have seen the aftermath...spillage of classified data is a significant emotional event for all involed.

Your rationalizing skills are off the chart!!!

Examples from WWIi of reporters beco.ing aware of plans but not publishing them so as to not put American lives at risk from compromising plans.

Yeah this 1000x worse than anything Clinton did and, in a normal administration, would take down tons of cabinet level people and the VP at the very least

If you knew how many times crap like this happened you would be floored

Accident without harm as mission went perfect

But definitely needs to be corrected

You said 1000 times worse than anything Clinton did

Clinton giving the Russians control over a huge portion of the raw uranium ore was a catastrophe without compare

But since you clearly suffer severe TDS there is no chance you would see turning nuclear material over to Russians comparing that to a newspaper reporter having the mission planning on a strike already underway and successfully completed

Again it does not need to be repeated however or was of little consequence

You talking about Uranium One still? What did Trump's first administration do about that?

A smart editor would have kept his mouth shut hoping to be left on the text stream
This is idiotic. You nip it in the bud because you want to ensure this doesn't ever happen again in the future. The reporter did the right thing bringing it to everyone's attention because now, HOPEFULLY, Trump gets rid of Hegseth for this egregious oversight, and his staff realize they need to do things the proper way instead of using non-secure communications.

I use Signal. It technically is encrypted, and is at least better than a SMS Text thread?

Was this before or after the plans had been carried out?
Before the Sicily landings I believe.

The the military had embedded reporters during Afghanisan and Iraq and they exercised a bunch of discretion as well.

Not to diminish the fvck up though.

fun fact: I had a much younger Britt Hume embedded with me for an op back in the early days. My fam saw me on TV and that was the first they had news of me. I had told them that as long as they didn't hear anything that meant I was still good. I think i have a VHS tape in the house somewhere that my wife got from Fox. I've never watched it.

I’m not sure we are ready to be lectured by the Biden admin on hires. Thanks though
