TUESDAY NIGHT TONY ELLIOTT UPDATE
By: Larry Williams

As we shared earlier this afternoon, Steve Wiseman of the Raleigh News & Observer is reporting that two additional candidates in Duke's coaching search are Jason Garrett and Troy Calhoun.

It's natural to assume that Duke's administration is expanding its search beyond the two candidates believed to be leading -- Tony Elliott and Texas A&M defensive coordinator Mike Elko -- but we do not get that impression.

We are told Garrett's involvement in the search is being propelled more by his interest in the position. Garrett, recently fired by the New York Giants, is close with Mike Krzyzewski and has an affinity for the Blue Devils. Garrett has never coached college football, though, and we're skeptical that he's a viable candidate.

Calhoun, the longtime coach at Air Force, is believed to have interviewed with Duke in Las Vegas either today or Monday.

Duke showed initial interest in Army coach Jeff Monken, and even despite the involvement of Garrett and Calhoun the prime focus appears to remain on Elliott and Elko.

We believe there is a good chance Duke could bring in its finalists for second interviews, and we are told the search could wrap up by the end of the week.

As we reported on Sunday, Elliott interviewed in person that day with AD Nina King and associate AD Art Chase. The visit took place at Elliott's home in the Clemson area and lasted close to three hours.

Elliott was a serious candidate for the vacant Virginia job, but our sources indicate the Cavaliers told him Monday they were going in a different direction. Penn State assistant and Virginia alum Anthony Poindexter is considered the favorite for that job.

If hired at Duke, Elliott would become the first person of color to serve as the Blue Devils' head football coach.

We reported yesterday that Elliott was not on the road recruiting, as discussions continue with Duke.

In the past month Elliott has had conversations with TCU, Virginia Tech, Virginia and Duke about their head-coaching vacancies.

Tigerillustrated.com will have more on Elliott and Duke as information becomes available.
