SOMETHING is causing an alarming rise in autism in our country.

Vaccines, among other practices, should be heavily scrutinized until progress is made.

First I’ll say that our kids got all the required vaccines and within the recommended time parameters.

That said, I think there is room for nuance here. Perhaps getting 6 vaccines at once is too much for some immune systems. We chose to spread ours out to minimize risk.

There are two reasons vaccines are rushed so early. First to protect the baby as quickly as possible. Second to protect the “herd” as quickly as possible. Not all kids are the same. The risk profile for hep B for my infant is quite different that one in the projects with needles and drug use around. One size fits all doesn’t always apply when circumstances and risk profiles are wildly different. I understand why the “herd” policy needs to be what it is, but individual decisions are okay too.

And of course we weren’t stupid enough to subject our healthy children to the Covid vaccine. In fact we pulled our youngest out of a well-regarded private school when we were asked to sign a form that would allow them to mandate the Covid vaccine for him as a 2 year old.

The thing for me is that because they have to make policy for the herd, they have to make policy based on the lowest common denominator in many cases. Is the risk of hep B for a baby born to shitbag, white trash, drug abusing parents higher than a very small potential risk of autism (not saying they are linked, but as an example)? Sure. Is it for my kid? Probably not.

It’s okay to question the experts because the experts may not have developed their policies and recommendations for your kid and kids like them.

The increase in diagnosis is mainly due to the way the DSM is used to diagnose. Autism Spectrum disorder isn't something that can be tested the same as Downs Syndrome which is chromosomal, they use a checklist of symptoms which can mirror other disorders.

If a child is non-verbal, they can be diagnosed as having autism,when it could also be a TBI. One key thing to note, is that there is substantially more assistance available for autism therapy than other disorders, so an autism diagnosis will allow parent to have their child receive ABA therapy.

There is a lot of nuance to this type of discussion and it's truly better to leave this to the pros.

My wife is a certified Special Ed teacher, as well as having her Master's in School Counseling. She is also a BCBA and is an expert in this field.

The biggest reason is that to get Medicaid and most insurances to pay for ADA therapy they get an autism diagnosis. I know of multiple kids who have Downs who also have a secondary diagnosis of Autism for insurance purposes.

There are a multitude of reasons why Autism diagnosis are higher than in the past. None of those reasons are vaccines.

To piggy back this a little, I think there are certainly a % of autism cases that are extremely questionable that are labeled as such just bc it allows more funding for various services and treatments.

My wife is also a sped teacher for 30+ years and I know she has, and has had kids that were abled autistic that clearly are/were not. I'm not saying 25% of cases are misdiagnosed on purpose, but a small % certainly are.

If I were going to throw out unproven wild guesses for possible increases in actual case percentages, they would be diet/food(both for parents and kids) and illegal drug use of parents/mother while pregnant.

I would also say that early use of tablets and phones is having a huge impact as well. There have been studies that have shown that the effect on young brains of technology is similar to heroin in the synapses. They also have actual withdrawal when their device is taken away
