Trump's national security adviser Mike Waltz has sent dozens of National Security Council staffers responsible for Ukraine, Iran and North Korea home, suspending them from their jobs.
The decision was so sudden that it left some officials unable to physically leave the White House complex because their badges stopped working, sources told the newspaper. As a result, Secret Service agents had to manually open the gates for those whose passes had been deactivated.
