Starting today, you can now buy and trade stock in Atlanta Braves holdings

If you’re interested in buying stock in the Atlanta Braves, here’s your chance.

The team’s owner Liberty Media and its stockholders voted on a reorganization move to split off the team and the Battery Atlanta as an independent publicly-traded company: Atlanta Braves Holding Incorporated.

Previously, you could only purchase shares under the Liberty Media holdings. Plans for the spinoff were announced last year with the vote finalized on Monday.

Channel 2 Action News attended a news conference at Truist Park on Tuesday where Braves chairman Terry McGuirk, president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos and president and CEO Derek Schiller spoke about the move.

While fans can own the stock, McGuirk says there will be no changes on the operations side.

“The purpose here today is we absolutely want to tell you that it’s business as usual. There are no changes to how we operate,” McGuirk said. “I’m proud to say that our franchise is looked upon as one of the gold standard franchises in baseball and we will continue to act that way... and I see nothing but great things ahead.”

The team’s stock will begin trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market as soon as Wednesday, under the symbols “BATRA” and “BATRK.” The Braves say they are now the first publicly traded Major League Baseball team in 25 years.

“It’s a unique novelty where if you’re a fan of this team, you can also become an owner of the team and own stock. That in a way is very exciting,” Schiller said.

What does this mean for the fans who are interested in stock? Channel 2′s Jorge Estevez spoke with Bankrate Analyst Ted Rossman to find out whether this is about fun or finance.

“I think from an individual perspective, it’s really about the fun and just saying that you have this collectible, you have this small share of ownership. I think from a business standpoint, there are reasons Liberty Media is doing this, like taxes and maybe partitioning that value of the team separately. From an individual standpoint, though, I think it’s really about the fun,” Rossman said.

Texas says...

We’re roughly 20 hours from an announcement from Lancaster defensive back Corian Gipson and this one is getting more confusing by the minute. Let’s throw out what we’ve heard and what we know and maybe the collective power of OB can help fill in the missing pieces of this puzzle.

- Gipson’s mind has been made up. This isn’t a case of him still trying to decide.

- He’ll announce at 4 p.m. on Saturday and the choice is expected to come from either Texas or Clemson. Ohio State, Bama and TCU also still technically in the race but not expected to be factors.

- Gipson has informed a couple of coaches at the school of his choice that he’ll be committing to their school. Those coaches, to my knowledge, are keeping a VERY tight lid on the information.

- One source in Austin still feels good about UT’s chances as of Saturday afternoon, but sounds like there’s some reading of the tea leaves going on there.

- Multiple other sources in Austin have been silent.

- A Texas commitment who previously told OB he thought the choice would be Texas said the word going around in recruiting circles is now favoring Clemson.

- Another connected source on the UT side seems a bit nervous about the direction of this one. He added that he never thought it was in the bag, and still feels that way as of Friday night.

- Clemson likes its chances, per a person with connections inside that program. But that person is wondering if Gipson hasn’t possibly told both schools he’s coming since there’s so much misdirection in this one. That same source said he does not believe anyone at Clemson has told any media members directly of Gipson’s decision (either keeping things quiet or the staff doesn’t know), so any late predictions in the way of FutureCasts or Crystal Balls is just “educated” guesses.

- Texas has been in contact with Gipson this week. Not sure what to make of that one. Could be a case of Texas still working because the coaches haven’t been notified of an answer, or could be just getting reassurances that things are going well as Saturday approaches.

- Tip of the cap to Gipson for keeping this one interesting and keeping information on his decision close to the vest. It’s recruiting, so everyone wants definitive answers, but sometimes it’s okay to admit you just don’t know. I have my hunches that things are trending away from Texas, but this one is really difficult to call and I don’t mind admitting that I’m unsure of what the next 20 hours holds. Buckle up.

9:15 p.m. update - FYI, a couple sources indicated within the last five minutes that it's not good news for Texas. I'm changing my FutureCast.

Don Munson

Have to share a quick note about Don Munson. A few months ago, I posted here asking if anyone knows anyone in the SID with whom I could connect my goddaughter who just graduated from Arizona State. She graduated with a degree from the Walter Cronkite School and is looking to get into sports broadcasting. Someone on here threw out Don's name and recommended she email him. So I forwarded the email address to her even though I don't know him at all and really didn't think anything would come of it.

Well, she emailed him and within a few hours, he called her back. They spoke for a while and he was very gracious, gave her great advice on the career front, said he'd try to help in any way he could and added that if she were ever in town, to let him know. This week, she is staying with my family and me in Charleston and texted him on Wednesday just to tell him she was in South Carolina. He immediately invited her to campus to meet him in person, to discuss her career and to show her around the facility. She drove up yesterday (didn't tell him she was driving from Charleston until later) to meet him and he couldn't have been nicer. He talked with her about her career path, gave her a tour of the football complex and even referred her to someone else he believed would be an even better resource for her in starting her career.

He didn't have to do any of this and I'm guessing most people in similar positions as he is would not. I'm grateful that he did. She was a Clemson fan before because of my wife and me being alums, but after yesterday, she is officially sold and now wants to come back in September for a game. I thought it was worth sharing and a big public thanks from me for doing all that.

Breed of peace..

For all the haters out there...

Texas insider on Gipson

Texas insider Eric Nahlin said:

“The key to being wrong is figuring out what you got wrong. I’m still working on that to some degree but I do think the Lancaster standout defensive back is going to pick Clemson tomorrow.”

“CLEMSON IS THE PICK”

“I appreciate the level of trust you have in us. I think it’s clearly warranted based on our overall track record, but there are going to be losses along the way. This is one I’m not sure should have been a loss on my part but you have to dance with who brung ya in this line of work. Our sources are good ,often great but predicting what will happen is much harder than reporting what has happened.”

Sounds like there finally waking up

Also we’re blessed to have a guy like Paul

Wild Hog question in South Carolina. Any DNR guys on here?

Was walking the trails in the Clemson Experimental Forest today, and from a higher ridge I saw a really big wild boar walking in the creek down below. Luckily my dog didn't notice him and I was able to turn around after I was able to confirm it was alone. It could have been pretty bad though if we ran into each other under different circumstances.

My question is what are the legalities of shooting a boar in self defense here in SC? Does it matter that it's in a protected forest? I know there's not a season on hunting them, but this isn't exactly hunting.
