Brett Favre reveals Parkinson's diagnosis during congressional hearing

By: Sean Leahy - Ryan Young - Yahoo! Sports

Brett Favre revealed Tuesday he was “recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease" during his testimony at a congressional hearing on federal welfare reform.

The Pro Football Hall of Famer spoke before the House Ways and Means Committee that was discussing "guardrails" regarding dispersing Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funds, which saw nearly $8 million go to Favre, a volleyball stadium at University of Southern Mississippi and Prevacus, a defunct drug company backed by the longtime NFL quarterback.

“Sadly, I also lost my investment in a company that I believed was developing a breakthrough concussion drug I thought would help others,” Favre said during the House hearing on Tuesday “As I’m sure you’ll understand, while it’s too late for me — I’ve recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s — this is also a cause dear to my heart. Recently, the doctor running the company pleaded guilty to taking TANF money for his own use.”

Favre, who played 20 NFL seasons, including 321 consecutive regular-season and playoff games, estimated during a 2022 interview on the "The Bubba Army" radio show that he suffered “thousands” of concussions during his football career.

Parkinson's disease is a condition that causes deterioration in the brain and affects motor skills. According to the Parkinson's Foundation, over one million people in the United States live with the disease and nearly 90,000 are diagnosed each year.

Favre remains tied to Mississippi welfare scandal

Favre allegedly accepted $1.1 million in federal TANF funds through the state of Mississippi. He allegedly accepted those funds in exchange for no-show speeches dating back to 2017. Favre also allegedly worked with a nonprofit organizer and former Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant to send $5 million in TANF funds to build a new volleyball arena at Southern Miss while his daughter played for the team.

Favre was not arrested, and he is not facing any criminal charges in the matter. He is one of 47 “well-connected people” who funneled $77 million in funds away from their intended recipients in one of the poorest states in the country, federal prosecutors alleged.

Favre initially repaid $500,000 to Mississippi in May 2020 and the remaining $600,000 in October 2021. The state has been going after the interest ever since. Favre said he didn’t realize the funds used at Southern Miss were intended for welfare recipients.

“I wanted to help my alma mater and benefit the community,” Favre told Congress. “Southern Miss introduced me to the nonprofit to see if they could help with funding. I had no way of knowing that there was anything wrong with how the state funded the project, especially since it was publicly approved by many state agencies and multiple attorneys including the Attorney General.”

Reggie Bush sues USC, Pac-12, NCAA for NIL 'injustice'

Reggie Bush sues USC, Pac-12, NCAA for NIL 'injustice'

By: Paolo Uggetti, ESPN

Former USC running back and 2005 Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush has filed a lawsuit against the university, the Pac-12 and the NCAA, seeking compensation for his name, image and likeness during his time with the program.

In the filing, Bush's legal team says that the three organizations earned significant compensation thanks to Bush's "significant popularity" and "prominence" by way of TV contracts, merchandise sales and media rights.

Bush's attorneys also said in a release that even after he left USC to play in the NFL, the three entities continued to benefit financially from his reputation "without any acknowledgment of his contribution."

"This case is not just about seeking justice for Reggie Bush," Evan Selik, one of the attorneys representing Bush, said. "It's about setting a precedent for the fair treatment of all college athletes. Our goal is to rectify this injustice and pave the way for a system where athletes are rightfully recognized, compensated and treated fairly for their contributions."

The Pac-12 declined to comment on Bush's lawsuit, while USC did not immediately return a request from ESPN for comment.

In three seasons at USC, Bush became one of the most prolific college players of his era. His 1,740 rushing yards and 18 total touchdowns during his junior season resulted in him winning the Heisman Trophy that year. That Heisman, however, was forfeited in 2010 by both USC and Bush due to NCAA violations surrounding impermissible benefits.

USC also had to vacate the 2004 national title -- the first time a major college football program was stripped of a national championship. The NCAA also stripped USC of victories in 14 games that Bush played, including that BCS title blowout victory over Oklahoma.

As a result, Bush was not associated with the school in any way until recently.

The adoption of name, image and likeness compensation for current college athletes in 2021 prompted action from Bush and his legal team. He began lobbying for his trophy to be returned, and Bush filed a separate, ongoing lawsuit against the NCAA for defamation after a spokesman claimed that Bush was involved in "pay-for-play arrangements."

Earlier this year, the Heisman Trust reinstated Bush's award, citing "enormous changes in the college football landscape," which led to Bush and USC becoming reacquainted. His retired No. 5 jersey -- which had been removed from the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum peristyle after the NCAA sanctions were handed down -- was brought back and displayed at USC's home opener this season.

"We appreciate that the new administration at USC is trying to pick up the pieces of the former administrations' unjust and improper handling of Reggie Bush," Levi G. McCathern, II, another one of Bush's attorneys, said. "However, the delay in fixing this speaks volumes."

Bush and USC had also been in reported talks to have him lead the team out of the tunnel for a game this season.

Nebraska/Big Ten teams don't want more Friday night games

I find this sorta funny and something Clemson may face in the future. We have played on Friday at Syracuse and I expect we will play on Fridays again at some point.

The Nebraska AD wrote to Big Ten about not wanting to play more games on Friday nights. They had to cancel classes and a whole bunch of other stuff.

Dannen said he didn’t want football games disrupting classes. Considering there are 90,000 seats in Memorial Stadium, home games create congestion on campus while students are trying to get to class on time.

“The university canceled in-person classes on Friday, and I sent a letter yesterday to the commissioner with the blessing of the president and the chancellor formally requesting not to host Friday games – outside Thanksgiving every other year, the game with Iowa,” Dannen said.

Oh, but did they mention 4.2 million people watched the game versus Illinois making it one of the higher rated games this year?

Universities complain about the inconvenience of a Friday game but then want to cash the biggest checks possible.

Democratic Party Support for Rape, Sex Crimes, Child Sex Abuse is Alive and Strong

House vote of 158 DEMOCRATS voted NO against deporting illegal aliens guilty of these crimes.

Since offenders are usually repeaters the Democratic Party has a large number in support of supporting SEX CRIMES IN AMERICA against American Citizens.

Just for the record ZERO REPUBLICANS voted against the bill. All for. Some Dems voted for the bill.

No support for sex crimes from those guys.

@iceheart08 speak up in defense of your DEM pals who defend the guilty against the vulnerable.

****⚽ No. 12 Clemson vs. Liberty | 7 p.m. | Tuesday****

Felt like the first half against Wake Forest on Friday was the best half of soccer we have played, and yet there we were locked in a 0-0 deadlock at halftime. We out shot them 10-4 in the first half, forcing them to make five saves. Should have been 2 or 3-0, IMO.
But, to quote Kurtis Blow, sometimes there are breaks to win and breaks to lose, but these here breaks will rock your shoes and these are the breaks and we got the break in the second half with the PK. And then held on for dear life as Wake applied a lot of pressure to try to tie it back up.
Clemson is now 4-1-2 with the lone blemish coming at home to No. 1 Stanford a couple of weeks ago - one that we can blame ourselves for. Clemson currently stands 4th in the ACC at 2-1-0, behind Pitt, Stanford and UNC. Waaaaay too early to talk about it, but the top 4 seeds get home games in ACC Tournament through the semifinals, so we are well positioned there at the moment.

On Tuesday, the Tigers will welcome 2-2-1 Liberty to Historic Riggs Field. Liberty comes in at No. 184 in RPI, just behind Presbyterian College (Clemson is 31st, just FYI).
This is a game that we NEED to dominate. We need a crooked number like we did against Loyola (Md.).
For the Flames, keep an eye on Michael Huss - he has four of the Flames' 13 goals and ranks 19th in SOG/per game with 1.8. Shouldn't matter, but he's their main threat.

With the expectation of a crooked number on Tuesday, it's time for the first goal from Wahabu Musah - true freshman from Ghana and our feeder-school Monteverde Academy. He is list at 6-0, 135 pounds and I think I heard on the broadcast that he is just 16? I can't confirm it anywhere however.
But, let's say that's accurate. While there have been moments of brilliance from the young man, there have also been moments of being a 6-0, 135-pound freshman - he's been pushed around some this season. But, against Wake, I thought he had his best game - he just has to finish. He came inches away from scoring against Wake, but did a lot of everything else right. Took players on one-on-one, got touches in the box, was just missing that final step.
I think it comes Tuesday.

This is our last ironing out the wrinkles game for awhile - next three games are at pre-season No. 2 Notre Dame on Friday, vs. current No. 6 UNC on Oct. 4 and at preseason No. 24 Louisville on Oct. 11.
Time to start being the man.

Go Tigers! Beat Liberty!

3 games into the season and we're 108th in total defense

Defense definitely hasn't been as good as expected but I was pretty shocked when I looked at the stats. To this point we have faced the UGA which is 65th in total offense, AppSt which is 39th in total offense and NCst which is 89th in total offense. We are giving up an average of 6.26 yds per play😯 I know some will say we have played a bunch backups the last 2 games but that doesn't tell the whole story, which a part of is our starting defense definitely hasn't been anywhere near what we all thought it was going to be.
