Hope everyone had a great week.

June 20,1996, the day radio as we knew it died. It's effects are still being felt.

It was on that day that Westinghouse Electric became the first entity to cash in on the new 1996 Telecommunications Act by purchasing Infinity Broadcasting for 3.9 billion dollars. The act relaxed restrictions on how many radio and TV stations one company could own in a single market.

By allowing one owner to own multiple FM radio stations in one market, the new owners found that it saved them money to put the management of all their stations under one roof. Before the multiple ownership rule, each station would have it's own program director, music director, promotions, engineering etc. You could have 5 Rock and Roll station in one market, playing the same music but all sounding different. With the new rule, they went down to one program director for 5 stations, one music director, etc. If the company owned stations in different cities, they often combined staffs. Radio stations lost their identity. It all sounded the same.

Today there are getting to be more and more stations that are going back to the 'individual sound', but they have a lot of ground to make up.

Movie scared us to death including my mom. Great movie.

We very rarely use the word genius. There are very few people who warrant it even being used in the same sentence as their name. Even more rare is when just about everybody agrees that the word is fitting for someone.

The Beach Boys founding member Brian Wilson has been called a musical genius by many and we agree with them.

Brian is celebrating 80 years on the planet today.

Happy Birthday Brian!! Thank you for letting us hear your music.

On Friday June 20, 1969, a music festival known as "Newport 69" started. It was the 2nd year for the festival, with the first being held in Costa Mesa, CA. The 1969 festival was held at Devonshire Downs in Northridge, CA.

Attended by an estimated 200,000 fans, the festival on June 20–22, 1969 was the largest pop concert up to that time and is considered the more famous of the two Newport Pop Festivals, possibly because of the appearance of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, which got top billing at the venue.

An estimated 200,000 people attended Newport ’69. Despite a poor sound system, a lack of food, water, and restrooms, and brutal security by the Hells’ Angels, it was deemed a resounding success by the attendees and musicians. The City Fathers of Northridge held a different view and banned any future music festivals. Newport ’69 made headlines around the country for a spell, but two months later, the phenomenon known as Woodstock made Newport seem like a picnic.

Jimi Hendrix was the headline act for the Friday night opening, but he played so poorly - supposedly from an LSD-laced drink - that he returned to the stage on Sunday. His Sunday performance with Buddy Miles, Eric Burdon, and several others lasted more than two hours. The Sunday performance is now legendary and prompted Los Angeles Times critic Pete Johnson to write that the audience “may have heard the best performance of their lives.”

Here's a list of Friday's performers:
Ike and Tina Turner
Albert King
Edwin Hawkins Singers
The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Joe Cocker
Southwind
Spirit
Taj Mahal

On June 20, 2008, The Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page became Dr. Page. Here is the story from the school:

The University of Surrey is proud to confer the honorary degree of Doctor of the University to Jimmy Page for services to the music industry. The award was made on Friday, June 20 at Guildford Cathedral. Jimmy generously signed a guitar (see attached photo) which will be given away in a competition at the upcoming GuilFest festival. Surrey’s involvement with GuilFest this year celebrates its innovative music programmes that reflect the diversity of contemporary musical practice.

James Patrick "Jimmy" Page, OBE is a world renowned guitarist and composer. Born in Middlesex in 1944, he grew up in Epsom, Surrey where he developed a passion for both painting and music. Throughout the 1960’s he was in demand as a session musician, leading eventually to his becoming a member of The Yardbirds. After various personnel changes, the band renamed themselves Led Zeppelin, and played under that name for the first time at the University of Surrey on October 25th 1968.

Over the next decade Led Zeppelin effectively redefined ‘rock’ music, drawing on a wide range of influences to create a string of legendary albums which have, to date, sold over 300 million copies. Led Zeppelin are unquestionably one of the most important and influential ‘rock’ bands ever, and the highly successful reunion concert at The O2 in 2007 shows the phenomenal interest in their music which persists today. Through his work with Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Page, a major creative force within the band, became universally recognised as being one of the greatest and most versatile guitarists of all time.

Away from music, he has been involved in the Action for Brazil’s Children Trust, or ABC Trust. His commitment to this cause goes back to 1994 where he witnessed first hand unrest in the largest of Rio de Janeiro’s shanty towns. He resolved there and then to do something to help, which led to the establishment of "Casa Jimmy", a shelter for abandoned street children, which continues to be run successfully today and has helped over 250 children to find a better life. Building on this, the ABC Trust was set up with Jimmy Page as the founding patron. In 2005 he was awarded an OBE in recognition of his charitable work, and also made an honorary citizen of Rio de Janeiro later that same year.

Sorry, but we have to say it……"paging Dr. Page".

The Kinks' Ray Davies is celebrating his 78th birthday today. Ray is one of those guys we could go on for days about, but we are sure you are familiar with his work.

Happy Birthday Ray!!!
By June of 1962, The Beatles manager, Brian Epstein was working hard to get the band more exposure by having them open for more established acts. On June 21 of that year, Brian arranged to have the lads open for Bruce Channel of "Hey! Baby!" fame at the Tower Ballroom, in New Brighton, England.

Backstage, The Beatles were making the rounds and getting to know people. Channel's harmonica player, who will go on to fame as Delbert McClinton, offers John Lennon some tips on playing harmonica, which Lennon will later put to use on the band's first single, "Love Me Do."

Here is a shot of the band (with Pete Best), Delbert and Bruce. 60 years ago today.

57 years ago today, on June 21, 1965, one of the great "American Made" albums The Byrds "Mr. Tambourine Man" was released. It was The Byrds debut LP. In one of the reviews of this record, it was described as "Folk Rock". It was probably the first time the term had ever been used.

Here is a list of the tracks on the LP:

Side 1
"Mr. Tambourine Man" (Bob Dylan) – 2:29
"I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better" (Gene Clark) – 2:32
"Spanish Harlem Incident" (Bob Dylan) – 1:57
"You Won't Have to Cry" (Gene Clark, Jim McGuinn) – 2:08
"Here Without You" (Gene Clark) – 2:36
"The Bells of Rhymney" (Idris Davies, Pete Seeger) – 3:30
Side 2

"We'll Meet Again" (Ross Parker, Hughie Charles) – 2:07

Happy 57th Birthday to The Byrds debut album "Mr. Tambourine Man!!!

He's one of our favorite people on this planet.

He has one of the greatest voices in the history of Rock and Roll.

He is Howard Kaylan and today he is celebrating his 75th birthday. Howard for those of you not familiar with him, was the lead singer for The Turtles, (Happy Together, She'd Rather Be With Me etc), a member of The Mothers of Invention , 'Eddie' of Flo & Eddie and one of the guys who sang the Strawberry Shortcake TV show theme song.

Happy Birthday Howard!!! And he was the first guy to use 'etc' in a hit song.

Todd Rundgren has 74 candles on his birthday cake today. His best-known songs include "Hello It's Me" and "I Saw the Light", which have heavy rotation on classic rock radio stations, and "Bang the Drum All Day", which is featured in many sports arenas, commercials, and movie trailers.

What many people don't realize is that during the 1970s and 1980s, Todd engineered and/or produced many notable albums for other acts, including "Straight Up" by Badfinger , "Stage Fright" by The Band, "We're an American Band" by Grand Funk Railroad, "Bat Out of Hell" by Meat Loaf, "New York Dolls" by the New York Dolls, "War Babies" by Hall & Oates, and "Skylarking" by XTC. In the 1980s and 1990s his interest in video and computers led to his "Time Heals" being the eighth video played on MTV, and "Change Myself" was animated by Rundgren on commercially available Amiga computers.

He is a man of many hats. He also has some cool stuff. We used this picture because it show Todd playing "The Fool" guitar that was formerly owned by Eric Clapton. Todd has had it in his collection for years (we have heard rumors that he sold it but we do not know for sure).

Happy Birthday Todd!!! Thanks for the music, the art, you know, everything you do!

Rock and Roll Hall of fame member Nils Lofgren turned 71 years old yesterday. Along with his work as a solo artist, he is a member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band since 1984.

Lofgren was born in Chicago and moved to the suburban town of Garrett Park, Maryland, near the northern border of Washington, D.C. as a very young child. In1968, he formed the band Grin. The group played in venues throughout the Washington, D.C. area. During this time, Lofgren met Neil Young and played for him. Young invited Lofgren to come to California and Nils lived for some months at a home Neil Young rented in Laurel Canyon.

Lofgren joined Neil Young's band at age 19, playing piano and guitar on the album "After the Gold Rush." Lofgren worked on his parts around-the-clock when recording was not in session. Lofgren maintained a close musical relationship with Young, appearing on his "Tonight's the Night" album and tour among others. He was also briefly a member of Crazy Horse, appearing on their 1971 LP and contributing songs to their catalogue.

Nils did a number of solo album releases. His debut album was a success with critics; a 1975 Rolling Stone review by Jon Landau (the guy who 'discovered' Bruce Springsteen, and became his manager) labeled it one of the finest rock albums of the year, and NME ranked it 5th in its list of albums of the year.

In 1984, when Steven Van Zandt left The E Street Band, Nils was hired to be the new guitarist.

If you ever get a chance to catch Nils' show, well let's just say, you'll be glad you did!

Happy Belated Birthday Nils!!!

Besides having one of the best voices in Rock and Roll, she's always a lot of fun. We are talking about Cyndi Lauper who is celebrating her birthday today.

Lauper has won awards at the Grammy, Emmy, Tony, New York's Outer Critics Circle, MTV VMA, Billboard, and AMA awards. She won the inaugural Best Female Video prize at the 1984 VMAs for "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun." This music video is recognized by MTV, VH1 and Rolling Stone as one of the greatest ever music videos.

And if that isn't enough, she is featured in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum's Women Who Rock exhibit. Her debut album is included in Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, while "Time After Time" is included in Vh1's list of the 100 Best Songs of the Past 25 years. VH1 has ranked Lauper No. 58 of the 100 Greatest Women of Rock & Roll. We think she should be higher….

You can be honest, the statute of limitations is up. Yeah, it was cool in the day.

Happy Birthday Cyndi!!! Please keep making it fun!!

On June 22, 1957, there was a street party in Liverpool. There was a live band who were making their first public appearance. The band was called "The Quarrymen". The following is from the Beatles Bible about the day:

The Quarrymen played twice on this day. In the afternoon they performed on the back of a stationary coal lorry, and that evening took part in a street party, both in Liverpool's Rosebery Street.

Our first appearance was in Rosebery Street - it was their Empire Day celebrations. "They had this party out in the street. We played from the back of a lorry. We didn't get paid. We played at blokes' parties after that; perhaps got a few bob, but mostly we just played for fun. We didn't mind about not being paid." John Lennon, 1967
Anthology.

The celebrations were for the 750th anniversary of King John granting Liverpool a Royal Charter, "inviting settlers to take up burgages or building plots in Liverpool, and promising them all the privileges enjoyed by free boroughs on the sea."

The event was arranged by Mrs Marjorie Roberts of 84 Rosebery Street. Her son Charles, a printer, was friends with Colin Hanton, and stencilled the Quarrymen logo on Hanton's bass drum. Roberts Jnr suggested the group perform at the party.

Our drummer Colin Hanton wanted to write the band name across the front of his bass drum. But there was insufficient space to write it as one word across the circumference of the drum – so he staggered the name in two words at diagonal angles. And vintage photographs of that drumhead have been erroneously cited by some as evidence for the name being split in two words. The Quarrymen.

The coal lorry was owned by a resident from number 76, who allowed the group to run a microphone lead through his front window.

In the audience for the second show was John's mother Julia, who brought his step-sisters Julia and Jackie to watch. The girls sat on the tailboard of the lorry while Julia looked out from the window of the Roberts family's living room.

During the second Quarrymen set a group of local youths from nearby Hatherley Street threatened violence towards the musicians, singling out Lennon in particular. The group ran to Mrs Roberts' house while the mob banged on the windows for Lennon. In the end a policeman warned them off and escorted the Quarrymen to their bus stop.

The Liverpool Post and Echo media company gave Rosebery Street an award for the best-decorated street outside the centre of Liverpool. The residents held a second party to celebrate, to which the Quarrymen were not invited.

65 years ago today it began in Liverpool.

He was an original member of The Beatles.

If Stu Sutcliffe were still with us, he would have been celebrating his 82nd birthday today. For those of you who are not familiar with Stu, he was a Scottish-born artist and musician best known as the original bassist for The Beatles. Sutcliffe left the band to pursue his career as an artist, having previously attended the Liverpool College of Art.

Sutcliffe and John Lennon are credited with inventing the name, "Beetles", as they both liked Buddy Holly's band, the Crickets. The band used this name for a while until Lennon decided to change the name to "the Beatles", from the word Beat. As a member of the group when it was a five-piece band, Sutcliffe is one of several people sometimes referred to as the "Fifth Beatle".

While studying in Germany, Sutcliffe began experiencing severe headaches and acute sensitivity to light in the first days of April 1962. He collapsed in the middle of an art class after complaining of head pains. German doctors performed various checks, but were unable to determine the exact cause of his headaches. On April 10th of 1962, he was taken to hospital, but died in the ambulance on the way. The cause of death was later revealed to have been an aneurysm in his brain's right hemisphere.

Happy Birthday Stu. RIP.

It was on this day in 1972, that Jethro Tull released their LP "Living in the Past" in the U.S. "Living in the Past" is a double album which is kind of a compilation collection of album tracks, outtakes, the "Life Is a Long Song" EP, and most of their singles. Many of the tracks only appeared as British releases before being compiled for this release for the first time in the American market. It was the first Jethro Tull album of this kind as all of the previous ones were studio albums. Through the seventies, Jethro Tull would continue to produce this kind of release.

Happy 50th Birthday to "Living in the Past"!!!

On June 23, 1979, the battle was on between Rock and Disco. When the Billboard Album chart came out on that day, Supertramp's LP "Breakfast In America" returned to the top spot. 'Breakfast' first went to #1 on the May 19th chart were it stayed until Donna Summer's LP "Bad Girls" overtook it on the June 16th chart. When 'Breakfast' returned to #1 it stayed there until July 7th, when Summer's "Bad Girls" became #1 once again, and stayed there for the next 5 weeks.

For some, it was 'good' vs 'evil'. We will let you decide which was which 43 years ago.

And how many of you know that the picture on the cover of "Breakfast In America" is not the New York skyline, but is actually a bunch of salt and pepper shakers, plates, cups etc?

Really Bob, it was a great honor..

18 years ago today, on June 23, 2004, Bob Dylan was awarded with an honorary doctorate in music from St. Andrews University in Scotland.

It was quite the honor. But looking at this picture and the expression on "Dr" Dylan's face……

"I Can See Clearly Now" by American singer Johnny Nash was released on June 23, 1972.

It was the lead single from his album I Can See Clearly Now, reaching number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and Cash Box charts. It also reached number one in Canada and South Africa.

The song has been covered by many artists throughout the years, including one by Jimmy Cliff for the motion picture soundtrack of Cool Runnings that peaked at no. 18 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1993.

Happy 50th Birthday to “I Can See Clearly Now”!!

Jeff Beck is celebrating his 78th birthday today. Jeff first came to fame when he was recruited by The Yardbirds to replace Eric Clapton (that says something right there and actually, the band wanted Jimmy Page but he suggested Beck, again says something). Jeff has also had his own band, The Jeff Beck Group, played in Beck, Bogert & Appice and recorded with just about everyone.

Here is an interesting piece of trivia that again shows the respect other musicians have for Jeff. Pink Floyd's Nick Mason wrote in his autobiography, that during 1967 Pink Floyd had wanted to recruit Beck to be its guitarist after the departure of Syd Barrett but "None of us had the nerve to ask him."

In 1969, following the death of Brian Jones, Beck was approached about joining The Rolling Stones.

Happy Birthday Mr. Beck. (The Chancellor won't allow us to use the name "Guitar God")

A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and a founding member of Fleetwood Mac, Mick Fleetwood has 75 candles on his birthday cake today. For all of the different versions of Fleetwood Mac that there have been, Mick is the only constant member of the band.

Which ever, Mick was in your favorite version. Happy Birthday Mick!!

Now this is really cool music history:

One of the things that we like to say is that the late Karen Carpenter had the voice of an Angel. This is a great story about Karen and her brother Richard.

The Hollywood Bowl held their annual 'Battle of the Bands' on June 24, 1966. The big prize, besides some trophies was a recording contract with RCA Records. There was also an album released with all the different winners.

One group won 3 trophies that night including 'Combo Division' and the biggie, the "Sweepstakes". The winning act was called The Richard Carpenter Trio. The act / combo was Richard Carpenter on the piano, his sister Karen Carpenter on the drums and their friend Wes Jacobs on the bass and tuba. But RCA did not see a future in jazz tuba, and the contract was short-lived.

RCA Records is a very fine label with a great history. They did have a period where they didn't have the best artist roster. There was a joke those days "What is the difference between RCA Records and the Titanic? The Titanic had a good band".

If RCA would have worked with The Richard Carpenter Trio, they would have ended up with The Carpenters on their label.

This was 56 years ago tonight. And we can still hear her voice..
