Clemson is now out of the sweepstakes for Shelby (N.C.) four-star linebacker Dax Hollifield, TigerIllustrated.com has learned.

Per our information, defensive coordinator Brent Venables has informed Hollifield (6-1, 225), ranked No. 172 nationally by Rivals.com, that the Tigers won't have room to add another linebacker this class.

The return of all three defensive linemen who were considering NFL departures -- Christian Wilkins, Clelin Ferrell and Austin Bryant -- meant Clemson would not have the space for another scholarship addition for the defensive board.

As we reported last month, Clemson had rekindled pursuit of Hollifield at the Shrine Bowl.

Hollifield took his official visit to Stanford last weekend, and Clemson had been looking at bringing Hollifield in for an unofficial visit this weekend.

We had received conflicting information about whether that trip stood to materialize from both sides. Even if Hollifield had come, there was belief from his camp that Clemson probably was too late to get back in.

It's now a moot point.

Clemson's staff now turns its focus to replenishing the linebacker corps with the 2019 class. Five prospects with offers are slated to be in town Saturday for the program's elite junior day, as we've indicated: Loganville (Ga.) Grayson four-star Owen Pappoe, Shelby (N.C.)'s Jaylon Scott, Savannah (Ga.) Islands' Kalen Deloach, Wake Forest (N.C.) Heritage's Drake Thomas and Roswell (Ga.) Blessed Trinity's Steele Chambers.
