California at it Again

You’re saying “California at it again” as if the Supreme Court hasn’t signaled that they are ready to blow NCAA amateurism out of the water. Justice Kavanaugh outright stated that if the case came before the court he believes college athletes should be treated as employees.

This isn’t a California thing. Pretty much everyone outside of college football traditionalists believe these guys should be getting paid. California is just ahead of the curve on this issue.
Yessir. CFB traditionalist here. That education, tutors, stipend, healthcare, nutrition, etc., etc., etc....... has a serious monetary value. There will no longer be any attempt made to try to keep some form of sanity to this lunacy. Greed is king. What's fvcking new? 🙄

Here's a summary. California has massive infrastructure issues, massive water problems, massive power challenges, massive homeless crisis in their major cities, massive education problems, massive budget problems, massive health care issues, massive problems with people moving out of their state, challenges with representation of all viewpoints in their state and I could go on for about an hour. But instead, they're worried about revenue sport athletes getting paid. That's California these days, they are the state that specializes in rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Everyone needs a fair view of the entirely avoidable apocalypse.
Yup, this place sucks. The weather is awful, the women are ugly, there’s no good weed, the beers suck, and everyone is broke.

Which part are you referring to that you think is communist/socialist?
The part that said “California.”
"Perhaps Lex Luther's plan for California (in the very old '78 Superman movie) wasn't such a bad idea........."

I wonder if you could amass hundreds of thousands of people with large crowbars along the San Andreas Fault and just pry that sucker loose and let it drift away toward China? I'm sure China would embrace them with open arms, well maybe with the exception of their feeling regarding the sexes? 😆
Yikes, relax and cut back on the Fox News…

These kids will cash those checks and then wonder where the tutor, nutritionist, and strength coach went while changing in their dilapidated facility.

Whole generation of folks who can't see the forest for the trees.

I don't have a problem if it is part of the package as long as it is included and taxed as a benefit.
Are you insecure about an 18 year old making more than you?

I forgot this was TI full of 7 figure salaries. Stupid question.

Seriously though, we don't tax academic scholarships. How on earth are you going to tax athletic ones? Much less only for sports that make money.

It's a wonderful place. It's probably the most beautiful state in the country. When I was in San Diego the women were gorgeous. I loved my time there. None of that has anything to do with how stupid the government is out there and how idiotic the voters are for continuing to elect them.

Even if you want to be a liberal state, which is perfectly fine, elect people that are competent and actually want to make the place better. The people there couldn't even recall the Ken doll they have as a governor right now who doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground.

You continue to burn up your forests because you can't manage them. You have people pissing and s******* in the streets and can't seem to manage that either. There's a massive budget deficit even when you have the highest taxes in the country. You continue to want to spend money you don't have. California is losing population faster than almost any other state.

So yeah, it's beautiful but it's run by morons. And that doesn't even go into the energy problems California has and the fact that in the midst of historic rain they managed to not collect most of what came because you have an inadequate infrastructure and reservoir system. Incoming real men of genius commercial for California leaders.

I am talking about in the context of if the Cali law that considers them employees passes. Once you claim you are an employee and not an armature student athlete, it changes things, imo. I am not talking about the current situation. We don't tax academic scholarships bc we consider them students and not employees. That is the difference.
Also, football players would/should not be the only ones in the boat if that happens. All scholarship athletes would have to be considered employees imo. I don't see how you can say one group of college athletes are employees without considering them all employees and "paying" them based on revenue.

Ha! Walk over to the Pelican Grill and enjoy a nice Napa cab. It will help you get through this rough weather we’re having.
Love the Pelican.

Hit up Shake Shack tonight with the kids then the beach.

Can’t beat it.

For the record CA doesn’t have the market cornered on shitty leadership. Peace

No argument from me on any of that. My distaste for politicians spans both aisles.

As long as they are included as benefits(which you readily admit they are) and are taxed as such, I am fine with that.

I live about 2 minutes from Pelican Hill. If you are still around have drinks or dinner tonight at “A Restaurant“ in Crystal Cove!

Like given for having lived here and for having a balanced view of the the state’s pros/cons.

Pass given on things like wildfire management, energy, water supply where clearly mistakes were made (you are correct) but mitigation/corrections are being made but the National media doesn’t cover that…they have to generate that negative angle to get the appropriate knee-jerk reaction to get ratings.

Social issues?
Not my area of expertise; but you’re right. I continue to smh at the tax & overspend with little to show. Seldom do I see the “best & brightest” going into politics, so that explains some of it.

I hope they are doing things to mitigate the fire situation. It isn't complicated. I love California. I wish it were a more hospitable place to people like me. Eventually it will swing back toward the center because extreme right and extreme left are not going to work. It takes ideas from all of us.

Libs being libs!!! Lots of America’s woes can be referenced on the left….even college football! Sad

California thinking is a joke.

Grew up listening to how much smarter kids from Cali and NY are way smarter than their counterparts in the South.

Boy was that a huuuge lie😂🤣
Look, there are smart kids and dumb kids everywhere, but by most metrics the public schools in the northeast are generally much better than in the southern states.

California is a mixed bag, because it is such a huge state (and a border state). Two public high schools my kids can choose from in San Diego are both ranked in the top 100 nationally, but I also have a friend (and Tiger alum) in LA who paid over $2M for his house but wouldn’t dare send his kids to the public school. That is one of the things that I find crazy out here. The HS’s are also much much larger, which I think hurts. Every little town in NJ, for example, has their own school system, so you tend to get some great schools in affluent areas and crappy ones in the more city’ish parts.

I completely hear you and agree.

We’ve had to file & update WMPs (wildfire mitigation plans). Work is going as quickly as it can, but permitting the work through some agencies like Dept. of Fish & Wildlife and some of the Forests (e.g. Angeles National Forest, Inyo, etc.) is bogging things down. We (and others) have put in place cost-reimbursable agreements to fund additional staff at these agencies along with other measures including briefing the Gov’s Office of the hurdles. Some of it isn’t the fault of the Agencies. The funding for these agencies isn’t commensurate with the workloads they have…plus, generally speaking, state agencies aren’t exactly models of efficiency with legit performance management metrics.

That is for sure. But it does often lead the way in that category.
No doubt. I have homes in a blue state (CA- lived there 19 years - we spend about 60 days a year there now) and a red state (TX 6 years - present- full time).... they both have issues .. Newsom without a doubt takes the cake ... I like Abbott for the most part but Dan Patrick is the republican version of Newsom .... crazy times for sure.

You are correct, there isn't one state agency that is the model of efficiency. In fact they when you look inefficiency in the dictionary the definition is CALIFORNIA.

Why do you want it taxed then? Why don’t you want their scholarship taxed now?

Is the scholarship now not a benefit to being a football player?
Now, they are considered amature student athletes. If the CA law passes and they are then considered employees, that is a different situation. At that point benefits they receive should be considered taxable benefit/compensation.

Should or you want them to be? The moment people like yourselves want to cap and/or tax these players, you have zero interest in their well being (let’s be honest you never did) and now are looking to make it less sweet of a deal to make yourself feel better because you were just a number in the college system.

Would love to know how those benefits and systems compare to a minor league program in hockey, baseball, NBA G League/D League, etc.

Would be willing to bet they are far and away better than most minor league benefits. Not to mention you also get an education that you can use if this sports thing doesn't work out.

It's low 6 figures IMO. That doesn't include team travel and meals for games....or Bowl Games. JMO.
