COVID Christmas

This was sent to me in a message from a former student. I knew it was bad, but this opened my eyes even wider!

I will message you here & you can relay the message because I don’t want to some how get in trouble for what I am going to say It is HORRIBLE. I work the covid unit & my own personal unit is PCU. At the beginning we kept all covid pendings or covid positive patients in the ED until a bed was available on the covid unit NOW we are taking covid pending patients all over the hospital. We take precautions as if they are positive and do our best to keep it away from the cancer patient who is just next door if they come back positive they remain on our unit until a bed comes available on the covid unit. The only times the bed comes available is when the patient codes & dies, the patient has went comfort care & dies, or they are stable enough to go home or to a facility who accepts covid patients. We have a bed come available once a week IF that. Our staffing is down because they got rid of resources and travelers. We work short all the time, the charge nurses have started taking patients & that is with management on the floor taking patients as well. These patients are so sick they are miserable. I have a patient go from 2L to 15L high flow to opti flow in just ONE shift! She wasn’t confirmed covid positive but I knew she had she later tested positive. Last week, I have 2 patients code on me & die, from covid. In 2 days in September, they were dropping like flies, not even going to lie. We had 7 deaths on the covid unit & one on PCU, IN TWO DAYS!! I actually took a week off because I am so exhausted & so tired of watching people die.

This former student works at our small town hospital. She is a RN. Over worked and overwhelmed.

We have an 18 bed ICU unit, and just a few days ago a Respiratory Therapist former co-worker messaged me. She stated that 14 of the 18 beds were on ventilators. In one shift they sent one to Charlotte to be put on ECMO, and she said 2 are maxed out on nitric. She said it is sad to say, but they are "dead in the bed."
My Fiancé is an NP on the COVID floor. She would laugh at @nmerritt11 posting his “facts” on here. Well, she wouldn’t laugh, because this pandemic has been absolute hell on her. She’s FaceTiming peoples families from her personal phone so they can say goodbye before they die. She’s had more patients die the past 6 months than the 6 years before that. She has patients completely lucid on vents that leave to go to hospice to die just so they can see their family before they do. She has been unable to see her grandparents since it started for fear of giving it to them.

Have had two family friends under 45 die from it. Oh, and after 9 months of working covid, my fiancé tests positive for it on Christmas Eve and affects the holidays for many more than just us. She has to use 80 hours of PTO to quarantine for a virus she picked up caring for people because people like @nmerritt11 “don’t quarantine” and our state and are numbers are sky high. He’s really opened some eyes in this thread. It’s clear that from his sales position he doesn’t actually get in there and see the truth of what is happening and instead is parroting his 106.3 talking points.

Yeah you have no clue what the hell I do daily...but good try. Thanks to your fiancé though...these healthcare workers are working their asses off and they all deserve the biggest and best vacations when this thing goes away. I do understand they are working tirelessly

That said...I cant quarantine because there are times I have to make deliveries to facilities who need products to care for their patients or go to meetings that I’m required to be at but yeah I’m selfish for doing my job....I am quarantined right now because my daughter was exposed. No one has symptoms but our Christmas was cancelled and I tested everyone earlier in the week and will test us all again Monday.

It continue your internet opinion of me just because I have loved my life although 100% within CDC regulations and I understand how to properly implement infectious disease protocol. I just got done wiping down my kitchen after dinner with N-list wipes that have less than a one minute Covid kill time...hope your fiancé is impressed and I hope wherever she works is giving her access to products like that because I’ve heard situations where a lot of hospitals and facilities aren’t spending the money to properly equip their employees which sucks in many ways
