From the mother of one of our hero's who gave his live in Afghanistan.

I can’t believe people don’t understand it goes both ways. I’ve had racial slurs thrown at me and threatened because I was white in predominantly black neighborhoods.

Well, yeah, it does. No doubt about it. However, what prompted the protests in the first place was a rash of unnecessary shootings/beatings by the police to black suspects. It was not about being called names. Like what happened it Charleston where that cop shot that guy in the park for hardly any reason. Those killings were becoming common and this was their way to try and stop them. At least that is my understanding of the protests.

This protest is about social justice. Namely, the NFL players that are doing this feel that people of African American descent do not receive the same treatment from law enforcement.
Dont kneel at sporting events showing disrespect for our flag and what we as a nation stands for. If you have a problem with law enforcement and youre losing sleep here's a list...
1. Keep you effing mouth shut when dealing with an officer
2. Hold your protests at your local jails, hwy depts and court houses.
3. Everyone pony up some pennies buy a section in the local and state fish wrapper.
4. If you really have a problem with society or you think its chitty make it better with your own actions...

Please name them. I know the one in Charleston was murder and the officer is in prison.

Statically, Asians are more likely to be shot than any other ethnicity.

Also please answer the following question for me:

Why do the citizens in Detroit, Baltimore, Atlanta, Miami continue to vote in the same people for decades but hardly ever have positive results?

Do you think the media has any responsibility in this protest? Police shooting 2017 database. 360 of the 766 deaths were white. 173 were black. 124 Hispanic. 27 Other. 82 Unknown.

Encourage discussion between whom? They have definitely increased the discussion, can they stand now?

They might have increased discussion, but when the President of the United States says they are disrespecting the flag the flag, are un-American, and should be fired (all the while being cheered by his conservative base) I dont think they are being heard. That is certainly how they perceive it. Again, there are two sides to this issue and until people understand the other point of view and take steps to make things better we arent ever going to get anywhere.

protest, protest your ass off - wear a hair shirt, walk with a banner on the sidewalk, have a telethon, refuse to play the game, do whatever you want - this is America - have at it baby.

UNLESS YOU ARE AT WORK.

All who say "this is great", "this is their right" - OK - lets see you have a little protest at your work and see how that goes for you.

Again, since when did a football player kneeling represent disrespect? If they were turning their backs or ignoring it, I could see your point.

1. When did we become Nazi's? I always show police officers respect, but I feel absolutely OK with questioning them if I feel I'm in the right. Running your mouth is effing stupid, I agree but it shouldn't be a death sentence if your skin is brown either.

2. Unfortunately, this doesn't work. The civil rights movement of the 60s gained no traction until people started seeing it on the news and in the papers. Comfortable people don't change society, the protests have to make folks UNcomfortable for true change. As an example, lots of Americans had problems when protesters were blocking the streets of Birmingham back in the day and the local police were using fire hoses and police dogs on women and children. Lots of folks were OK using Napalm on Vietnam villages until they saw a bunch of charred screaming kids running away from a US air strike.

3. Same as above and you are the best example. Adds in a newspaper that you just referred to as a fish wrapper PROBABLY isn't going to do the trick.
4. I THINK that's sort of the point of the protest.

Now THIS is a compelling argument.

The problem with this protest is that it isn't changing anything. There is no clear end game or goal.

There are a slew of them out there. I just grabbed the first three on my search. So it is not like the one in Charleston was the only one.

I could not find anything to corroborate that Asians are more likely to be killed by police than any other. Maybe you are right, but I could not confirm it. The data I found showed that blacks and native americans are more likely to be shot than any other - by far:

http://www.cjcj.org/news/8113

As to your question: I cant give you the exact answer of course, but I can give you my opinion. I think blacks, just like whites, tend to vote for people who share their mindset consistently and these tendencies are very hard to change. I mean, if you start with the premise of why do they vote for continued problems I think you could pretty much ask the exact same question for the state that I live in: South Carolina. South Carolinians have for almost 30 years returned the GOP to full power in State Govt despite education results not really getting any better at all. Likewise, the prison system and DHEC and the DOT all have had systemic problems yet the GOP stubbornly remains in full control. What is it - Like 26 of the last 30 years SC has had a GOP governor. Why do the people of SC do this? Well, because, that is what the majority of white people do in the south - they vote for the GOP just like the ppl in big cities vote for the Dems.

For the record, I am not a big fan of the party system and I wish everyone would vote more for an independent. Likewise, I certainly do not think it would be a bad thing for people in big cities to vote the GOP sometimes and I likewise feel the same way about the South and changing up to the Democratic party more often.

I dont really know what the media's responsibility is in all of this. I do know that the Freddie Gray killing and the one in Charleston really went "viral' on social media at the beginning. If anything, I think these protests are due more to the ease in communicating outrage and in setting up protests on social media platforms. In fact, this one is not a race issue but the police dept in Salt Lake City has been slammed for where a policeman inappropriately arrested a nurse who refused to allow a suspect's blood to be taken without a warrant (this was the policy the dept and the hosp agreed to far before this incident). The public was outraged and the fired officer is blaming the prevalance of cameras and social media. I think that is the main driver here too moreso than the mainstream press. Just my $.02.

Uhh OK, can you explain what's wrong with this post. The points I make seem self evident to me.

And thanks for the Articulate part. I'm ashamed to say though that there is a serious error in my grammar in my very 1st sentence. Can you spot it? #Facepalm

Well I have found that when you present a credible alternate viewpoint that goes against conservative orthodoxy you generally get called names. It is a lazy way to of saying: Yeah, you are pretty much correct but I still hate you bc you don't think like the rest of us. Wear it with a badge of honor!

As has been stated many, many, many times. This protest is about social justice. Namely, the NFL players that are doing this feel that people of African American descent do not receive the same treatment from law enforcement. You can make an argument either way whether this is true or not and I'm not bothering with pros and cons here. But to say that NFL players kneeling for the National Anthem is insulting the troops and flag is like saying Rosa Parks was protesting public transportation. It is neither the intent nor reality of this protest. Anyone who has ever played football knows this. My team always took a knee when we prayed before every game. I assure you we weren't insulting God. In football, you take a knee to pray, to get extended info from coaches, and most of all at the end of the game/practice when you are worn out or hurt and simply can't stand anymore. In NO CASE is taking a knee in football seen as a sign of disrespect.
I'll give it a whirl. This paragraph is littered with nonsense.

We know what they're protesting. The problem comes with when and how they're doing it. The national anthem is a time when you stand and honor the troops. That's just what it is. That's why there's military flyovers at the end of many of them. It's very clear that the playing of the national anthem before a football game is a time you stand and respect the military.

Your Rosa Parks analogy makes no sense. Nobody is confusing their intent. We're pissed that they are ignorant enough to choose the 45 seconds per week that people stand and respect people who have fought or are fighting for their freedoms to protest anything.

Your kneeling in football crap at the end is completely irrelevant too. The military stands at attention during the national anthem. If you're able and you're doing anything less it's disrespectful. If the military as a whole decided that getting on a knee was what they wanted to do during the national anthem then sure, have at it. As it is they're prescribed to stand and so should everyone else that is able. Whether or not kneeling is disrespectful in other aspects of life is completely irrelevant. It's disrespectful during the national anthem. Period.

I don't know the answer for "how" to get more attention to police inequality but I'm not enough of a jackass to think that the right way to do it is to disrespect the people that are in the military. They can say they're not disrespecting the military all they want but the fact of the matter is that the national anthem at football games has been tied to the military for years upon years and deciding to do anything other than stand at attention is disrespectful.

By the way I have no allegiance to Drumpf and think he's a clown. The two matters are not connected.

i respect the hell out of veterans for their sacrifice and loyalty to this country.

with that said, i have no idea why people insist on putting their ideas or opinions on such a pedestal. stop pointing to one of them agreeing with your racist or horribly misguided sentiments as proof that you are in the right. people, including veterans themselves, love to cast one idea as the opinion of the entire herd (as that dolt @avengermg73 has done above). veterans are not a homogenized group. pat tillman is an american hero who was also quite liberal, even maintaining a correspondence with noah chomsky of all people.

This is what Trump has done and it's terryfying.

For the millionth time, kneeling during the anthem has nothing to do with demeaning or taking for granted what the military does.

It is protesting racism in America. There is not a single line in that ENTIRE rant that acknowledges racism. There is not a SINGLE tweet or response from Trump that acknowledges the protest having to do with racism.

He is diverting the blame to turn the players into the "enemy" while ignoring the primary issue...and the public and TI are falling for it.

Racism in America is being protested by a bunch of athletes who fall within the 1% of highest income earners with the NFL minimum contract?

Oh, ok.......

I will agree about the party system. I vote who I think will best represent my beliefs and who I think will be best for the community.

It's common sense. Yes they have every right to protest. Just about everyone in this country has some type of prejudice against them. Either by color, gays, lesbians , religious, political, and many others. That's where the problem comes. I've got my views which differs from yours. I'll compromise to a point but then I'm not changing how I believe on certain issues. We have a right to protest against them also. What Trump said was wrong as I believe they are also by not standing. We as a nation need to come together to help this country.

This would all be solved if we passed a law that compelled people to stand during the national anthem. Lots of people arguing against the kneeling would love the idea of the federal government forcing people to do something.

Oh, ok.......

White people, with the right to vote already, raised hell that black folks couldn't vote. White men in the top 1% signed the voting rights act and other civil rights amendment. They already had civil rights. White folks were critical in the success of the underground railroad freeing slaves, already free themselves. Men protested so that women could vote. Those men already had the right to vote. These athletes are using their platform to help others without a voice. If you're dug in as far as what you believe you'll never get any of this anyhow. Borderline waste of time.

I guess the folks protesting should be ignoring the masses. Polls literally said at one point vast majority of America hated Dr. King and every type of peaceful protest. None of them were good. And every one of his was way worse than this stuff today. He'd laugh if all they were disturbing was a sporting event. He tried to bring down economy of cities and states. He was murdered. He's a hero now.

If you're mad because you'd get fired at your job for doing this then that's a personal problem. Get a different job. You're free to do that. Our congressmen do a lot of bad things that would get you fired at your job too.

I believe a lot of people don't have a fvcking clue what they are protesting, but I believe the players are fully aware of what they are protesting.

You don't think you have to be completely stupid to not know what they're protesting? You can't fix stupid. I have no desire to change the minds of anyone that doesn't know by now. He said it plain and clearly from the beginning.

People need to admit that they simply don't give a damn. Problem is that sounds a little harsh and would bring unwanted judgements upon them. Plenty of important issues that I don't particularly care about I'm sure and it'd make me sound cold. Trying to act like you don't know or arguing it doesn't exist doesn't help.

As a very respectful, hard working citizen I get treated like crap far too often. I'm not arguing for the criminals. I don't want to die because of a misunderstanding or poorly trained over zealous or even racist cop.

You must be an idiot if you can pull race out of my post. Common sense and responsibility is racist then I'm a racist then. Im still waiting for my white privilege to pay my college tuition. Wanna help a brother out?

Dude, It's pretty obvious from your post that you have no idea what white privilege is (but you think you do). White Privilege isn't going to pay your tuition, or get you a job, or make you work less hard for any of the important things in life. Just b/c you are white doesn't mean you get to break the law and the cop just lets you off b/c you are white or you automatically get a job b/c of your skin color. That is NOT what white privilege is. BUT that's what a bunch of people THINK it is (and I assume that you are in this group). Which is why this group doesn't believe in the concept (and you can't blame them for it)... because the above stuff doesn't happen in real life. That's bullshit.

White privilege is not a positive force. Instead, think of it as a LACK of a negative force. As a white guy who has been around for a while (almost 50 years), I know that pretty much whatever situation I happen to be in (if I can control it at all) the results will be dependent on my skills and actions. in other words I always get a level playing field and my success or failure is all on me. It doesn't mean that I don't have to EARN what I get... instead it means that I have a fair shot. In a job interview, I fully believe that if I'm the best candidate, I WILL get the job. If I'm stopped by the police, I KNOW that if I act respectfully and have done nothing wrong (aside from speeding/broken tail light or whatever) the policeman is either going to write me a ticket (or not) and move on. And this kind of attitude effects nearly everything in life. I can stop to help a stranded female motorist and she's not scared of me. Women don't clutch their purses when I get on an elevator with them...

You get the picture... And this type of feedback alters my behavior over time. I'm confident, calm, and collected in job interviews, which makes me look better. I'm at ease when the cops stop me, which puts the cop at ease as well. And so forth. If you approach a situation in a calm and confident manner, you are MUCH more likely to have a positive outcome. On the other hand, if you are wondering if the guy across from you in the interview cares about your skin color (it doesn't matter if he does or not for this purpose), it distracts you from being your best, you aren't going to interview as well. Again, you may or may not get the job, but it's just one more distraction. If you are scared that the cop stopped you (again, it doesn't matter if this feeling is justified or not), you are going to act differently than I do... and the cop is going to respond to that.)
This kind of thing can color your behavior, but not in a good way.

THIS is white privilege. It doesn't mean you didn't struggle b/c you are white or that you somehow didn't earn what you have. It doesn't mean you can't succeed if you are not white. It's a small and subtle thing, but it can effect things.

Every one of you dumbasses crying about social injustice should attend a graduation from basic training where your kid swears to defend this country from all threats foreign and domestic and to lay down their lives if necessary to do so. When they make this pledge it is done without regard to race, religion, social status or anything other than the citizens of this country represented by the Stars and Stripes. You should have to look a mother, father, brother, sister, wife or child in the eye when they have lost a loved one protecting your freedom and tell them it is ok to disrespect the very thing that honors the ultimate sacrifice their loved one made.

I will be damned if some punk ass athletes and a punk ass like you will dishonor that flag when my kid is one of those very people who has made that commitment to all people of all races and all religions just because they are part of this great country.

Find another way to protest and raise your issues, but do not disrespect our flag and our national anthem. If you want to do that, get the **** out!

What if I told you I did the same thing your son/daughter is doing and this protest doesn't bother me at all? Of course I would stand but we also signed up to protect everyone's rights, and a peaceful protest is one of them.
