Gregg Popovich - “We live in a racist country.”

"If you were born white, you automatically have a monstrous advantage — educationally, economically, culturally, in this society and all the systemic roadblocks that exist, whether it’s in a judicial sense, a neighborhood sense with laws, zoning, education. We have huge problems in that regard that are very complicated, but take leadership, time, and real concern to try to solve. It’s a tough one, because people don’t really want to face it.”

i dont disagree with this to an extent, but my question is how much of this is self imposed and how much is the boogeyman's fault

The only people I'm racist against are ignorant people of Yugoslavian decent.
While we don’t always agree, you typically have thoughtful takes on topics. Do you think that racism is a problem in the US today?

Pretty racist of Pop

To me, saying it’s a racist country then my thinking is that you believe over 50% of the population is racist...and I don’t believe that. I don’t believe speaking in absolutes like that because it doesn’t represent the true reality.

I do agree with a lot of what he says and there are undoubtedly regions of the country that are have a much higher percentage of racist behavior than others. However, that shouldn’t be broad brush for the entire United States.

Prejudice or racist? I believe people throw around racism when in fact they mean prejudice. Depending on who you are, racism can be illegal. Racism can bring the world down on you. Prejudice can be an insult or even a joke. You can choose to laugh at it or move on. You can ignore prejudice. I believe these people like to cry racism in cases of even minor prejudice to establish power over others. They are using fear to control others and to be dominating when in true cases of racism that wouldn't be possible.

Now if you are a poor white person you aren't at an advantage because you don't qualify for scholarships and quotas are against you.

Do you remember a few years back when the NAACP fought to keep "Race" on the college applications in Michigan in order for the universities to be successful at fillinq quotas and having diversity? Hmmmm, we don't want race considered unless it is to our advantage.

And for the life of me, I can't understand how requiring a photo ID to vote is racist, yet some organizations make it out to be. They don't require just certain races to have a photo ID they would require ALL races to have a photo ID.

Sure, but to say it's a "racist country" implies that it's the prevalent attitude, that it's institutionalized, or that it's something that's accepted by a bunch of people not called Greg Popovich. I think institutionalized racism is a thing of the past, that personal racism is at an all time low and is dropping with every year, and that the residue of past racist power isn't the only thing that's leading to unequal outcomes for black people. When Popovich says things like this, he sounds like a racial determinist, and I don't think racial determinism is particularly good for anybody.

I'm also generally skeptical when people talk about "systemic racism." Although I think it's obviously true that black families are still at a disadvantage in terms of social capital and accumulated wealth because they (not necessarily a particular individual, but maybe their parents or grandparents) may have been excluded from certain positions or jobs 40 years ago (and beyond), people who claim to see "systemic racism" usually go a long way beyond that claim. Many say that racism structures our entire society, and claim to divine racist motivations behind everything. They're the ones who might claim that microaggressions (which only they can define) threaten black mental health, and are an important explanation for black underachievement. But, of course, if you criticize that theory, then according to them it just means you're not "woke" enough to see what they see. It starts to sound a little like the worst kind of religious dogma.

No doubt I had an advantage because I had a mom and Dad at home that loved me and showed me great examples of what a man and husband should be. I am very grateful for that. They worked hard and helped me with a terrific education. No doubt, that is a huge advantage.

I don't think for a minute that some white kid growing up in a broken home with parents that care more about meth or crack than they do people has an advantage. I think they are more disadvantaged than most.

I think those of Jewish heritage are highly discriminated against, and no one bats an eye.

I’ll take “Statements made by coaches trying to ingratiate themselves with the race from which 99% of their players come from” for $1000 Alex.

We get it. You an incapable of understanding context, you don't need to make that point for us repeatedly in this thread...
