If you wear shorts or a tee shirt to church

And at the end of the day this thread is what most walk away thinking true Christianity is both b/c their unregenerate mind still finds it a joke as much so as the whitewashed attitudes exude self-righteousness. Both miss the point of the gospel.

Major on the majors. Minor on the minors. Instead, the opposite occurs and too many people spend Easter talking about what people wear and the evils of bunny rabbits versus who Jesus is and the significance of the Resurrection. #signofthetimes

One Sunday morning, an old cowboy entered a church just before services were to begin. Although the old man and his clothes were spotlessly clean, he wore jeans, a denim shirt and boots that were worn and ragged. In his hand he carried a worn-out old hat and an equally worn, dog-eared Bible.

The church he entered was in a very upscale and exclusive part of the city. It was the largest and most beautiful church the old cowboy had ever seen. The people of the congregation were all dressed with expensive clothes and fine jewelry. As the cowboy took a seat, the others moved away from him. No one greeted, spoke to, or welcomed him. They were all appalled by his appearance and did not attempt to hide it.

As the old cowboy was leaving the church, the preacher approached him and asked the cowboy to do him a favor. "Before you come back in here again, have a talk with God and ask him what he thinks would be appropriate attire for worship in church." The old cowboy assured the preacher he would.

The next Sunday, he showed back up for the services wearing the same ragged jeans, shirt, boots, and hat. Once again he was completely shunned and ignored. The preacher approached the cowboy and said, "I thought I asked you to speak to God before you came back to our church."

"I did," replied the old cowboy.

"And what was his reply?" asked the preacher.

"Well, sir, God told me that he didn't have a clue what I should wear. He said he'd never been in this church."

Is this in the new testament, or is it some non-sense that a hillbilly made up?

"Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."

Do you really need to go further than this? Humility is scattered all over the bible.

The pastor at my church wears a tee shirt sometimes while he preaches, so I guess you wouldn't approve of that. It's one of the fastest growing churches in the nation, so luckily a lot of other people are more open-minded when it comes to worshipping.

You'd think so but there are plenty of slobs in this world. It's disgusting. I think it's a big millenial thing to dress like that at mega churches too.
You're placing too much importance on superficial things IMO which I find pretty disgusting.

I agree the most important action is to attend , but absolutely no cargo shorts on Easter and T shirts should be subdued!! Happy Resurrection to all of my Tigers. You know He brought us Dabo. God loves all colors, but he wanted the sky Orange for all to see at the end of the day.

The most important action is to act in the way that Jesus taught. You don't necessarily have to go to church to do that.

Your pastor is a slob and embarrassment. I bet he's attracting millenials like crazy.

You more than likely go to newspring.
If you worry about what people wear when they go to church, then you have completely missed the point, and you more than likely are going to Hell.

Matthew 7:22-23 - "Many will say to me that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons, and in your name perform many miracles? Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'"

I'm an atheist, so full disclosure here ...

Y'all do understand what Jesus Christ taught, right? He despised pretense. Many of the churchgoers I know are only concerned with dick-measuring every Sunday. If you follow Jesus, that's not the way you should live. I'd suggest reading the Thomas Jefferson Bible.
So........you really believe hummingbirds and archer fish happened by random chance over millions....eh ....trillions of years? How about the indescribably vast and finely tuned cosmos including our tiny solar system....do you believe its held together by forces that were not designed by intelligence? Seriously?

I dress usually in Khakis or dressier Jeans, Polo or button up shirt, and I do wear my hat. I take my hat off upon entering church. Some Sundays I wear a church tshirt when I am serving. I am over security at my church (no we don't have badges or ear mics but security to our children and people in worship is important), serve as a greeter, and help in the parking lot with new visitors. On those days I wear my church t shirt. I was a member of a large Baptist church in Easley, with 5 times the members of my current church, that expects you to dress in a suit and tie. I can tell you if you were to walk into that church you would get whispers if you were wearing a t shirt or flip flops. I can tell that same church does less for the community than my current church. I do think if you have nice clothes you should wear them and not look like you crawled out of a ditch. With that said I don't think God cares about my outward appearance. When I die and stand before God I don't think he is going to ask what I wore at my last church service. He will probably ask why I deserve to be in Heaven (to which I would respond I don't). My entrance was paid for by a God who sees deeper than my clothes and sins. All I had to do was accept him as my Lord and Savior and try to live for him in the best way that I can with the time I have.

Then they are not a PCUSA Presbyterian like we are. Coat and tie wearing, gay ordaining and marrying, old hymn singing, and unsmiling all the way. Wouldn't have it any other way. :) Frozen Chosen. But those few arriving in shorts are welcomed, bless their hearts. And there is a church for all and none should be condemned. To each his own.

I wore shorts to church for the first time today in my life. Mostly just because of this thread.

Jesus came to Earth, died for our sins, and rose so that we could join him in Heaven. If you don't believe that, I pity the meaningless existence you have here on Earth for such a limited time. If you do believe that and still worry about what type of clothes someone wears to church... SMH.

We're having our Easter presentation tonight. 3 rows in front of me a guy is wearing flip flops and shorts. Everyone shook his hand and welcomed him and his girlfriend. I'm wearing blue jeans. Our job as Christians is to bring the loss to Jesus for salvation. We wonder why the world is in the shape that it is all most of us have to do is look in the mirror

The Jesus I serve doesn't have a dress code. He also cares WAY more about a person's heart than he does their clothing choices. Would you rather a person wear shorts and a t shirt and meet Jesus or be told they can't come to church without a suit, which a lot of people don't own, and not go, and miss out on eternity in Heaven because of their clothing? That answer is a simple one for me.....

In a generation where more and more people are unchurched and un-parented, we have to major on the majors. Dress code isn't a major. God really doesn't care. It may challenge some of our background, upbringing and cultural norms, however none of those have any eternal value. Jesus died for people, not what they wear.

I admit, I only read about two posts in this thread. Of course the unchurched should come to church dressed any way they feel comfortable with in reason. As you began to read that old ole fashion out dated thing called the BIBLE it will tell you how to dress in and out of the church. Don't let some man, church or institution dictate what you wear to church. Let the living word of God.

Homie, if atheists are right, your existence is as meaningless as anyone else's.

Yes, yes, and yes.

I suppose if you wanted to split hairs, I'm what most people would call "agnostic." I don't "believe" anything, and my opinion is that it's silly and nonsense to do so. I admit that I do not know. Religion claims to know what it cannot know.

What does that sentence even mean?

I don't think anyone should argue this point with anyone else. You have to pick your battles. I personally believe you should wear your best but we have anything from 3 piece suits to overalls at our church from time-to-time. I don't think you should dress nicer if you were having supper with a dignitary that you respect than if you are going to Gods house. That's just me. I wouldn't argue it either way.

Would I rather have an unsaved person come to church with shorts, flip flops, and a tank top on than stay home? Of course. No brainer.

I also think that Gods church, the people not the building or the people just when there in the building, should be recognizable and not make the church look like the world so that the world feels comfortable when they come. Honestly, if you're a lost person, you should feel a little uneasy when the word of God is preached.

Would any of you wear a T-shirt and shorts to a wedding or a funeral? Unless your answer is yes you need to ask yourself why said clothes are not good enough for those events but are somehow good enough to wear when going to worship the most powerful being in the universe.
