It was said in the class that if a child was not comfortable on whether they were a boy or a girl they should tell their teacher and she would work with them to get assistance. When the teacher was asked if she said that, she stated that she had. This us what my friend told me and they are not political and you would not know if they were Republican or a Democrat (and I don’t know or care what they are). So you have an issue with a teacher seeking out assistance when a child comes to them with an issue? A child, who probably doesn't feel comfortable telling their own parents out of fear they'll be demonized and chastised by their own parents? If this tweet is accurate, it sure is a troubling trend in the trans community. Trans/non-binary are ~1.6% of the population. That means if they make up 50% of modern school shooters, they are 3100% more likely than their cisgender counterparts to shoot up schools.

Yes. In the deep south, telling your Evangelical Christian parents that you have questions about sexuality or gender is not safe in many many households. Many children have heard preaching their entire lives that say that being gay is sinful and you will burn in hell for eternity.

My question would be is it being trans, or is it the way these students are treated that are leading to this? I think we all agree that mental health counseling and support for these students is vital. That's extremely hard to provide if you can't talk with anyone, and it's actually illegal in Florida for a school counselor to even discuss the issues.
As I've stated, my wife has over 20 years experience in public education, with 10+ of those being as a school counselor. She has been faced with this issue quite a few times.

I have first hand experience of parents demonizing and disowning their children that came out as gay. My gf my senior year of HS's older brother came out his freshman year of college and they disowned him. To my knowledge, he hasn't spoken to them since, but I haven't spoken to him in years so maybe they reconciled. He said he knew it since middle school, but was afraid to say anything because he didn't know how his parents would react.

Bullying has always been the #1 theorized cause of school shootings ever since they became so common after the 90s. It's more likely bullying (online or in person) was a major catalyst for these events.

to start with, the teacher confirmed what they said. This was a 5th grade public school class. You saying you are not far left does not make it true. Interactions with police that end with a person being killed is very rare. Those incidents that involve a minority are even rarer. Those incidents where the shooting was unjustified even rarer.

I cringe when Republican politicians mention mental illness being a leading cause of mass shootings but then refuse to find mental health/treatment programs and vehemently oppose “tests” and mental health background checks in order to purchase firearms.
I also cringe when I hear Democrats yelling guns guns guns guns, when … I know that I’m old enough to remember kids in high school who would go hunting before school and would pull into the parking lot with their rifles on the gun racks and it’s not this was in the late 80s/early 90s.
