Eighty (80) years ago today February 19, 1945, The U.S. Marines of the Fourth & Fifth Divisions landed on Iwo Jima. Estimated nearly 7,000 U.S. Marines were killed and another 20,000 wounded. The Japanese suffered and estimated 18,000 killed. The island was secured on March 16, 1945. It was one of the most savage and costly in Marine Corps history. The U.S. Marines were recognized with 27 medals of honor with more than half of which were posthumous.
