Monday night update

Well the biggest news on Day 3 of August camp is the surgery Tre Williams will undergo tomorrow.

Earlier today we reported Williams was absent from practice as they examined and evaluated an injury. Dabo Swinney confirmed that Williams suffered an injury in his knee area in the weight room.

Even as Swinney says it's not serious, it still has to feel like a significant setback to Williams as he tries to make an impact amid a glut of talented interior defensive linemen. Remember, Williams missed spring practice after undergoing shoulder and foot surgery.

Entering camp, Williams was penciled in as a likely second-string guy with Ruke Orhorhoro.

In his absence, surely this is viewed as an opportunity by Payton Page, Etinosa Reuben and DeMonte Capehart.

Capehart looks like he's in much better shape than before, and Swinney complimented him today.

"He's done a good job in all areas. He's ready now. I'm really proud of him. I'm really proud of him, Payton and (Reuben)."

As we told you in an earlier update, Swinney said Williams might be able to return for the opener against Georgia Tech.

-- The good thing about Joseph Ngata's injury is that it doesn't appear to be a knee, ankle or soft-tissue injury. We're told he got dinged in the head, and Swinney said it came on a great play.

"He'll be fine," he said. "He had a really good start. He'll be out a couple of days."

As we noted earlier today, Ngata looked good running around and seemed in great spirits.

-- Swinney said Antonio Williams is as quick as a cat, and very instinctive. Said he has a lot going on mentally so they're trying to maximize his reps. Said he has to get stronger.

-- The pads go on tomorrow, and Swinney said the players are ready to start full contact.

He shared another great one-liner from Nick Eason:

"On Day 4, God made Riddell."
