Obligatory 4/20 Thread

It's been a pretty good run for legal weed these past few years. Recreational use is legal in 9 states and some form of medical use is permitted in 29 states. At least 3 states have legalization questions on their November ballots.

One of the main arguments for keeping weed on the schedule 1 drug list has been the supposed cognitive effects on users (particularly young people). These effects were assumed to be true even without longitudinal studies proving it.

A new metadata analysis in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) suggests that these effects are small at most. This is a pretty big deal as JAMA is the premier medical journal in the US.

The moral of the story... Smoke it if you got it! Your brain apparently won't turn into a fried egg.

Studies can prove whatever you want, depending on what you want.

I can only tell you this from personal experience: pretty much every person Ive known over the last 30 years who have used regularly, it made them stupid and lazy.
Like, very consistently.

In my own immediate family and my brothers kids, all but 3 individuals are college graduates.
Yep, those 3 were the only ones who smoked pot.

Nice work. The easy valve bags are money. I bought my V at age 35. It was the best decision I ever made.
Just finished bags 1 and 2 (at 365 F ... will > on successive bags). Other than the 20 minute sterilization process that felt like 4 hours (didn't factor that in and it was reminiscent of how I feel during the 20 minutes preceding a Clemson kickoff), I'm already overjoyed with the purchase. At 52, I have to begin rationing lung capacity for the final leg ... and this thing makes it hard to distinguish the vapor from garden-variety air. Flavor is pure and smooth and acutely flavorful. Great build quality and easy and intuitive to operate (thanks Helmut!). I'm camping happy tonight fo sho!

Regardless if the effects (THC) are bad on the brain or not, I am sure that inhaling the smoke into the lungs are not good for you. If man was made to live in a smokey environment the good Lord would have made it that way. How many people smoking cigarettes would want to walk around with a sealed bubble on their head filled with smoke? I know some wouldn't mind that if the smoke was cannabis.
So god made everything for a reason, but a plant that has numerous healing traits is bad for no reason other than the government told you so??? Oh... my bad... because of smoke. That’s why it’s bad. Government bans anything and everything that can be smoked lol.

God didn’t intend on you eating high fructose corn syrup either bud.

Why am I not surprised by this take from you?

My friend had some fun last week in Vegas eating some gummies. He said they were pretty good.

Hahaha. Just because POS’ like weed doesn’t mean weed makes you a POS. That is you trying to find a cause from correlation. I love hearing all of y’all cry about a crop when you will blindly eat anything made by scientist in a lab.

Nutrition is the real killer. Stop listening to your corrupt government bro.

This all day.

About 80% of all “food” in your typical grocery store will F you up way more than a bit of ganja.

I will admit weed can enhance both good and bad traits imo. So a lazy pos might just be more of a lazy pos.

Unless you’ve been sober your entire life (more power to ya if so) then you’re being a backwards, judgmental hypocrite. It’s a fact that alcohol causes more long term negative effects on the body and also impairs the user significantly more than marijuana.

I’ll keep grooving over here in my alternate reality.

For the rest of my people in here - I’m heading to Asheville tomorrow and seeing String Cheese Saturday night.

Stoke level is at an all time high.

Negative Ghost Rider, the pattern is full!

First of all, that's why I pointed out AND linked the journal article. JAMA does not have an agenda. They are interested in answers and science. Period. They are very concerned with the quality of the articles that they print and as usual this one has solid methodology behind it.

Second, allegorical evidence is not scientific evidence. I'm not dismissing your personal observations, but this metadata study examined literally thousands of peoples results with pre and post testing. Their results show little effect in brain function. Your observations are simply that... observations. Perhaps a lot of the stupid and lazy people that you know smoke pot. That's not the same as pot making them stupid and lazy.

As an example, take the recent autism scares associated with the MMR vaccines. Autism generally shows up in kids shortly after 2 years old. Kids get their MMR vaccines at this age. Some folks put these two things together and came up with the conclusion that these vaccines were causing Autism. Although this myth has been thoroughly debunked, some folks still believe it.

Same thing with your immediate family. Non college graduates have higher rates of substance abuse (both legal and illegal). I'd suggest that whatever made them non graduates also made them more likely to smoke pot. Both my brothers and I smoked pot in high school and are all college graduates and have good jobs and stable families. Should I think that pot smoking helps you graduate college and have a good life? Of course not... pot had NOTHING to do with that. I will admit that walking around stoned all day (or drunk, or high on pain meds) is not going to help you succeed. Addiction is a whole different animal. That's a completely different thing that this study does not address.

Finally, I don't know what you think pot does, but it is NOT LSD. There's no alternate reality any more than there is when you drink a couple of beers or a shot or two of liquor. You get a nice buzz, its lasts for a while, and then you come back down. In other words, it's nice to do at a party or after work or on the weekends. FYI, I've also never killed anyone, got in a fight, or generally gone insane while high either. That movie Reefer Madness is not real man.

some people like to have a good time, some don’t. Pot is like food. A lot of people live to eat while others eat to live.

and what’s funny is conservatives say guns aren’t the problem people are. They also say weed is the problem not the people lol.

Unless you don’t drink alcohol, you can’t say I enjoy life without an alternate reality.

It’s so rich the amount of people who justify their own and family members/friends severe alcoholism ( not saying that’s you) because it’s socially acceptable to drink alcohol.

Not at all.
Just an observation.
I'm a flawed individual, like everyone.
But those who like to claim that pot has no negative effects have their heads in the sand.
Can't that be said about virtually everything we put in our bodies except fruit and vegetables?

Alcoholism can certainly be a HUGE problem. One that has effected my immediate family.
But then, I think ANY addiction is a bad thing.

A lot of people compare alcohol to pot, but they really aren't the same.
I can have a glass of wine with dinner, with very little to no effect. And in the case of red wines, a glass of wine a day has been shown in many, many studies to be very good for the circulatory system.

But smoking a joint gets you high. It's really the ONLY reason to do it.
Personally, I don't care if someone gets high, as long as I don't pay the price if they hurt someone or themselves while they separate themselves from reality.
But shouldn't we be asking why people have lives so bad that they want an escape so badly?
And it's not even a real escape - it's all a drug induced fantasy.
Why?

Can't that be said about virtually everything we put in our bodies except fruit and vegetables?

Sure, too much of anything is probably a bad thing. Too much food is clearly bad. Too much of any drug.
But the question is, why do people want so badly to put themselves into a drug-induced alternate reality - which is just fake? Why are their lives so bad? Why are they hurting?
Pot doesn't solve whatever their problem is. Except for whatever medical purposes there are, and it may not actually solve those.

The plural of anecdote is not data. You have a lazy world view that excuses you from thinking critically and allows you choose whatever reality you want.
