Omnibus Spending Bill

Repub party is in a civil war. Populist vs establishment.

No question. It's reminiscent of the Democrats infighting (Liberal vs Centrist) in the 1980s for control of the party after Jimmy Carter's loss. That one lasted over a decade. Who knows on this one.

Well the establishment repubs still have a strong majority in the actual congress even though I think the rank and file voters are solidly populist numbers wise. Time will tell how it plays out.

dont remember mentioning a person or party...good thing you were here to make it about donnie. wouldn't wanna go 5 seconds without bringing him up
Very true... BUT as surely as the sun comes up in the East. Republicans start bitching about spending and the National Debt when there's a Dem President. I think the point here is that while Trump was running up record debt, there were crickets from Republicans THEN.

There's a couple of things that have to happen to cut our debt... We are going to have to cut spending and we are going to have to raise taxes. That's just the way it is. I'm not seeing a situation where it's one or the other, you need both to make real progress on the debt.

im party agnostic when it comes to federal govt spending. what we need to do is gut the federal govt. receipts will be what 5 trillion this year? none of this is effectively spent, most of it might as well be torched. work on the debt by actually solving the issues of how it got there in the first place. gut the federal govt down to the studs, shift power to local state/local govt where you can track all spending. you cant keep treating the debt by confiscating more from people - that has a limit. our problem is profligate spending and its not party specific.

Vast majority of federal spending is social security, Medicare/Medicaid, and the military. Have fun cutting that

Interest payment on the national debt is 2nd largest behind military I am thinking without looking it up.

oh it wont ever be done. which is why we'll live in lala land until the whole thing comes crashing down.

to be clear im not making a prediction of that being imminent, only that its an inevitability as things stand. doing anything meaningful would require accountability from govt and media with punishments justifiably applied to all, as well as plainly speaking to the american people that they too need to have expectations for themselves. instead well keep bleeding the stone because its easier than being honest

Just goes to show how expensive entitlements become over time. Highlights why I am so adamantly against adding new ones.

To address the existing ones, we should increase Medicare age over time and work on prevention practices earlier in the healthcare cycle to lower senior healthcare costs.

Life expectancy has increased nearly 10 years since Medicare started and we haven’t adjusted the starting age along with it. The ability for people to work through their 60s has also been expanded. My dad retired at 73.

Hard to win elections with positions like that though.

the idea of working into my 70s sounds ****ing miserable

the idea of working into my 60s sounds equally miserable
