Im not a Trump hater, but if I were, I could think of a thousand better hills to die on than the WHO hill.

World Health Organization is recommending for governments to slow down alcohol consumption during this time.

Freedom is overrated when it’s a crisis lol.

The average human will give up what ever freedom you ask them to give up as long as you promise them safety. Then they find out that safety is an illusion and never existed in the first place.

FYI . We are the largest contributor to WHO at $890m compared to China who gives around $70m . Some of that $890m can come to good use here in the states the next several months .

Exactly. Use it here at home. Think of how much free shit that would buy for illegals! This should get bipartisan support.

I know where you are coming from. I'm surprised that he did it. But it really doesn't matter what he does or does not do. Everything he does or does not do is going to be opposed. So why not do it?

We are in a economic crisis. We need to pull in the horns and continue to make other nations pay for stuff. Why do we need to foot the lions share of the burden for the WHO which didn't help us out. Maybe we can be more selective in how that money gets spent, or we spend it here at home. It's not like we haven't been hit by this virus too.

He needs to cut funding to the UN by about 1/2 while he is at it, IMO, due to this virus, of course.

What specifically didn't The WHO do? I want to be able to argue intelligently when a liberal brings it up.

Uh huh. I defend trump supporters all the time but this is a classic case of big government and big media influencing the OP to the point he came here to complain about a non-issue.
I don't like Trump but I can empathize with his supporters.

To tell you the truth, I don't know what Trumps specific reasons were. I haven't heard what they are. Which is about as much as I know about the reasons why we have been footing so much of the bill for that organization for years, when there are so many developed countries that should have been contributing more.

No way did I think he would do it. I don't see how it helps him politically, the timing is bad. He would have been better off to have waited (if he were going to do it). If anything this can only hurt him. But I use myself as an example... given my overall world view of wanting to see less American tax-dollars going into international black holes and more of it being used to directly help Americans, come November, it's not really going to make that much of a difference to me.

I also believe that he's going to come back in 30 days or so and reinstate some (how much? ) of that funding that has been "withheld". A complete guess on my part.

Now I know for the next 2 weeks we will hear how Trump hates people with Coronavirus and has doomed the world to millions of deaths by this action, but the reality will be that if the WHO really wanted it can find some cost savings somewhere and other countries can step up and make up the difference, if its needed.

The reason is China got a hold on the WHO somehow which in a normal situation is no good, but in a pandemic that originated from their country, it's unacceptable.

what do you mean by a hold?
It's obvious that China is exerting influence over the WHO which is completely inappropriate of course. The joke in that region which is kind of lost in translation on the video is that it should be called the CHO instead.

What really pisses me off the more i read is that they are buying all that influence for rock bottom pricing of $40M/yr. For almost $1B a year we should be calling the shots....not to mention that some of our $$ goes for all the normal waste and corruption that is associated with these semi-"untouchable" international organizations.

Here is the WHO's mission statement regarding Public Health Monitoring and the science behind it.
"The Bulletin seeks to publish and disseminate scientifically rigorous public health information of international significance that enables policy-makers, researchers and practitioners to be more effective; it aims to improve health, particularly among disadvantaged populations."
  • prepare for emergencies by identifying, mitigating and managing risks
  • prevent emergencies and support development of tools necessary during outbreaks
  • detect and respond to acute health emergencies
  • support delivery of essential health services in fragile settings.

Now what part of that DID they do? The WHO is an absolute failure as a public health organization. They have had mission creep to define "health" as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." https://www.who.int/about/who-we-are/constitution

They hold themselves out to be an international CDC, but they have become nothing more than an advocacy organization. They started as a way to combat the international spread of malaria and TB in the 40s and 50s. They couldn't even isolate the spread of Ebola in 2 small countries. It wasn't until the US and France got involved that the latest ebola outbreak started rolling back. The WHO was months late in identifying the last Zika outbreak. They've trashed their science and monitoring in order to stay cozy with governments so they can continue with other advocacy type work.

Its a bait and switch. They hold lavish meetings with international speakers to feel good about themselves. Its like the International Olympic Committee of public health organizations. Spend that $400 million on the CDC and National Institutes of Health. If Bill Gates wants to support the WHO's advocacy and policy go for it. But from a taxpayer and research they are an abject failure. https://www.who.int/health-topics/research/#tab=tab_1

Yes, you could understand if it was the U.S. w/ that kind of influence. It would not be right, but it would be more understandable.

Trying to exclude Taiwan was no small matter either. Taiwan has handled the outbreak better than any other country that I'm aware of. Sure most countries don't have the ability to copy their blueprint, but that doesn't mean valuable info can't be gained from their perspective and their experience dealing w/ this virus & SARS previously. We are talking about information that could save hundreds, maybe thousands of lives. For all the funds the U.S. has contributed, I think we are entitled to that information.
