People are crazy yall. All over some crappy fast food breakfast place

Not sure why he was charged? Asshole should’ve been punched. Can’t help he was a bitch that had a big mouth and couldn’t take that punch.

While the old man was a racist piece of shit, punching someone in the face can end poorly. It's a slippery slope to allow this level of assault over words. The man deserved an ass whoopin, I'm just not sure where to draw the line

It's assault no matter how you look at it. It's really unfortunate for everybody involved that the nasty old man died, but if you're going to punch an old man for something he said that was offensive, that's a risk you're taking.

I dont see anything political in this story. Crazy man gets all up in arms over something as minute as a fast food drive thru transaction. Man who cant control his feelings/emotions makes a life altering decision.
It's not exactly Clemson-sports relevant.

Very, very similar situation happened last October up here in Rocklin at the Starbucks. Altercation over loud music between young kid (19) and an elder man (late 60’s, I think), punches thrown, elder gets knocked out, hits head on curb, dies three days later. Just tragic.

I was sitting in the ER with my blown Achilles that Sunday. The guy’s wife and I were the only two standing in the checkin line. Listened as she explained what happened while she waited for the ambulance to bring him in. He never regained consciousness.

Having said all that, if you want to escalate an argument or de-escalate it, you’d better understand the risks involved. Sadly, most people don’t and don’t know how to protect themselves, either.

I remember when you talked about this back when it happened. Very sad

you really dont see why he was charged?
Not with manslaughter. I understand it’s not the state attorney’s responsibility to decide on wasting tax dollars or not, but you have multiple accounts that the 77 year old was inciting violence. Hope they come with a lesser charge because 12 people aren’t going to convict this man of manslaughter.

Sure the man deserved a punch, and the person delivering the punch deserves to be held accountable for his actions. G. Floyd was a POS by some accounts, but he didn't deserve to die either; the person who killed him is being held accountable.
Punching a guy that called you a n* twice = a cop kneeling on a man’s neck when he’s handcuffed?

That’s probably true as far as 12 people convicting. But you can’t punch a non threat like an old ass man no matter what he says. They are just words

ITT I learned it’s ok to kill someone over words. Where do we draw the line on what justifies this act? What if the old man had made derogatory comments about the guys mom? Is it just this one despicable word or are there others?

Obviously it’s assault and both were in the wrong imo. Manslaughter doesn’t seem just here from a layman’s perspective.

I’m of the opinion that this is the underlying reason as to why restaurants and other hospitality businesses aren’t able to fill open positions.

Elevated unemployment is a part of it, sure. But folks are also seeing the way these employees are being treated and aren’t willing to deal with that every day.

Seems to me that the store employee stood his ground after a belligerent customer trespassed and engaged in behavior causing a reasonable apprehension of fear.

If George Zimmerman can stalk a teenager to death, not sure why this guy was arrested.

I guess he should have shot the old man.

certainly doesnt help

The fact that there are people ITT defending a guy that killed another person over a meanie head word perfectly illustrates the level of dumbfvckery were dealing with in modern day America

Just unbelievable.
A voice of reason! If you let someone's words incite you to that point you are a very weak person. Why people let someone they don't know or care about affect them to the degrees we see daily with nothing but words is astounding to me. It's a pussified world we live in.

Stood his ground?? It's best to read the article before responding.

I did read the article. The deceased trespassed the employee's place of business, yelled obscenities, and then refused to cease hostilities once inside.

At that point, the employee had a reasonable apprehension of fear and stood his ground, at least under Florida law. Again, if the law permits a teenager to be stalked and met with gunfire, then the employee's punch to someone who invaded his workplace is more than justified.

There are countless examples of stand your ground laws protecting people who go on the offensive in much more questionable scenarios than this one.

Every case is different. If these are the facts, and I'm on the jury, he gets a not guilty verdict. Got no sympathy for the old racist...
