"Rich Men North of Richmond" - Oliver Anthony

I am so confused. I thought you guys didn’t like it when musicians enrich themselves while being critical of America and the opportunities available to them and their cohort.

Conservative media was fired up about Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, Beyoncé, Common, etc.

What is different about this guy?
Aww…look how clever you’re being.

Whether you pay $2 in taxes or $2 million in taxes....

Look at the the last three major spending bills passed by Congress....

We are all victims. Our government continues to waste trillions of dollars and has created rampant inflation. This song targets both sides of the aisle and rightfully so.
I find a lot of the “both sides” stuff even sillier than some partisanship. This song isn’t too bad because it’s pretty artfully written, but I wonder if he realizes that it’s not primarily rich people in DC who are determining his life. Just as important, these people are elected and from where you’re from. And does he know that he can become one of the “rich men north of Richmond” and be complained about, himself? Or that some of those people agree with just about everything he says? Another irony is that a lot of the people who say they’re trying to help people like him support the stuff he doesn’t like.

I don’t hate the song, and I agree with most of his complaints. I just find the, “politicians are all terrible, and are responsible for everything bad” thing obnoxious.

Sort of seems like he wants the government to solve his problems, while also hating the government. Another irony that often comes along with this kind of populism: while seeming to hate politicians, expectations of what politics can do are much higher than many who have less feelings about all of it.

That said, I’ve put the song in the rotation.

This! Amen buddy. Thanks for pointing that out.

I don’t think he is asking the government to solve his problems. On my phone so not gonna type it all out but you should listen again. I did a bunch and I see what he is saying now.

But glad it’s in the rotation. Good song.

It took multiple listens to understand what he was saying?

No, not really. Just said I listened to it a bunch.
Oh, sorry for my confusion. When you said you listened ‘a bunch’ and then you ‘see what he is saying now’ I assumed you listened a lot of times and then figured out what he is saying now. Silly me.

I am not a wordsmith nor do I put much thought into anything I post.

I love that these guys love to throw the word communism around whenever a democrat walks in the room.

This guy cries about working for wages and paying bills and they are ready to anoint him the greatest voice of our generation.
Do you think he has a good singing voice?

Why do some people love Washington DC? I'm curious I could understand why you don't like the song. But it's just seems some are mad because he is critical of DC.

It’s very odd to see modern Dems cling to Government the way they do. It’s also odd to see the Dems as the party of the ultra elite …. VP Harris is attending a “grass roots” fundraiser… in Martha’s Vineyard.

Of course what is even more odd is to see “Republican Patriots” support and back Russia and Putin.

Ultimately I’m reminded of a George Carlin skit …. The rich pit everyone against each other so they can keep all the wealth to themselves. The Middle Class is there to do all the work with just enough to keep them slightly comfortable. The Poor are there … to scare the shit out of the middle class

What does this really have to do with me liking the song?

I didn't read all that tweet to be clear.
Nothing. You can like the song, nothing wrong with that. Taste is subjective, after all.

It's just a tweet explaining that the song support wasn't grassroots/organic, and that it was created solely by Bongino/Walsh and other RW operatives to gin up discussion/controversy.

This thread went exactly as expected. Nothing's going to change until we can start talking one another and actually listening with an open heart and open ears. Guess we're not there yet.

He is very right about the bullshit pay, but he misses that the bullshit pay is the crux of the problem, and not the fat person on welfare. The fat person eating a free box of fudge rounds is merely a scapegoat for the lyricists' bigotry, and the bigotry of those who love that kind of messaging.

Folks, your war is a class war, not a culture war. The culture war is a design of the rich men all over the country, not just "north" of Richmond. And it's purpose is to have poor conservatives hating poor liberals and vice versa, instead of all poor people banding together and taking on their true enemy...the ultra wealthy. Tifwiw.

That is awesome. I just hope the Fudge Rounds line wasn't ghostwritten. That would be worse than finding out about Santa.

Then why do you support a massive government bureaucracy that makes this problem massively worse?

Bullshit pay is a problem because of bullshit economics. The bullshit pay here is dramatically higher than most of the world and that's because our economic system is a total disaster because of government and corporate co-mingling.

Also, all these poor people can vote and they consistently keep voting for the worst people. They far outnumber the "rich" you seem to dislike so much. What do you propose the poor do with/to the rich? Any ideas to go with your viewpoints?

We will never do it.

"My party isn't corrupt in any way. Only yours. You have to be the wrong one here... no way I am"

Some people literally refuse to see what's in front of them. If 2020 didn't show us I honestly can't think of anything that will. Remember all of the experts on here?

We're about to do it again. Two horrible humans running to be president of the best country on Earth. Meanwhile they both campaign on division, hating the other side and ridiculing those who see things differently than they should. This is why populism is so dangerous and destructive. What we need is principle, not populism.

ehhhhh.. We need to get back to the days of 'professional politicians'. You know, the ones who "act presidential" but screw us over and get us into taxpayer funded wars for decades at a time.

I miss those days.
