We are getting completely ****ed. Yah the government could do better by not balancing the budget on our backs and always bailing out the millionaires.
The message in the song is unfortunately very true, but damn if the song itself isn't one of the worst songs ever. I can't listen to that dude sing more than 2 words without wanting to pierce my eardrums. He does that whiny, voice-cracking fake singing that people who can't sing do to make it sound like they can sing. Like singing falsetto except in a country song.
Everyone has their own taste. Just got back from some time in Banner Elk. Lots of music that sounds just like this. Had a live band at the 5506' Skybar and man the music was good and air refreshing as always!
I mean it’s a young guy singing about problems that exist through his perspective. It’s original and shows some level of artistry and emotion - generally what I want my music to do. Are some of his views misaligned with mine? Absolutely. Jason isbell has turned into a whiny, emotional and intellectual wreck of a human. Still respect his artistry. I just wish he’d do more drugs.
Also - and this is not directed at you - but, the predictability of certain folks being in here saying exactly what they’ve said is hilarious/pathetic.

Well, my take is the guy is being covered apparently by Matt Walsh, Ben Shipiro etc. So he's going to be wealthy. I actually know people in the biz and they've told me that a California republican flew out to NC to have him record the song and then pumped it back to the republican internet machine. This guy telling me this has been a producer in this area for 20 years... I don't know why I wouldn't believe him but its completely anecdotal. It makes me question the authenticity of the whole thing... However, I will stop short of calling him completely astroturfed. But yah, whining about poor people eating fudge rounds in your worker class song, smells really wrong.

I’m not a big fan of the song, but this isn’t the point. It’s that he’s taxed to death and those taxes pay for things like fudge rounds for fatasses on welfare. That’s probably accurate.
Fudge rounds for fat people aint even making it into the 1% of line items. The dod hasnt passed an audit since when? Why focus on poor people being the problem? Thats way crazy for a class song.
Well we spend 20% of our total federal budget on welfare - $9,000 per household - so it’s not an insignificant cost for taxpayers. Some of us pay far more than that to support these programs. I pay 10s of thousands of dollars per year for welfare programs.
The message is that people are frustrated with having their hard-earned money taken from them and then redistributed to others in an inefficient and ineffective way.

Didn’t say it all is. Some of it is worthwhile. Some is wasted. Some is given to deserving people. Some is given to undeserving people. And I wish welfare only cost me $9k/yr.

The anti war movement has 0 to do with welfare. Are you seriously comparing it? One was spawned by the people in opposition to the media and government propaganda. If that guy is making shitty money like he claims, then his effective tax rate is below 5%. And the biggest categories are social security (which he will benefit greatly from), Medicare and Medicaid, which also would benefit him greatly, and defense, which I assume he is in support of.
I genuinely think it’s a beautiful song but the lyrics are laughable.
I don’t disagree that people paying single digit effective rates and bitching about it - or especially bitching about other people needing to pay more - are full of shit.
I think the fact theirs a maximum contribution to social security is beyond fiscally irresponsible
You and I have gone back and forth on this and I showed you the math that demonstrates a consistent increase in marginal income+SS tax even with the cap in place. It’s a safety net program and once someone has reached the cap, they have fully funded their obligation.
