Serious tariff question

TDS

You aren’t being an rational observer if you thought Trump could, literally, reverse the terrible actions of the Biden admin in 1 day.

Now, he has absolutely immediately taken steps to lower prices, but any rational observer knows it will take time to work its way through the system.

I suppose it’s why Trump is being aggressive early, plenty of time for things to work themselves out before mid-terms.

Think what will happen if CPI is under 3.5% in two years! What will dems campaign on? All the inflation they were worried about won’t have come to fruition. And then they will have to explain to their voters why the boy cried wolf.
Trump derangement syndrome is now expecting Trump to do the things he said he was going to do?

We've already discussed this multiple times and I don't want to derail this thread. No, I didn't believe they would come down day 1, I'm just talking about what his voters expected. I doubt this is what they wanted.
The voters did not expect his policies to be effective in 1 day or one month.

That is not rational behavior

I just bought some futures. Market will probably rally by the morning.

They are selling off because of the uncertainty, but by tomorrow morning people will realize this is good for the US. We will see green tomorrow
I hope you are right. If not, I’ll await the explanation.

Hope you make a killing on the futures

His voters did not expect that. You somehow interpreted his remarks as such.

These are two countries, not two people who are good friends. Trump had Trudeau down to talk about it. You and I will never agree on Canada, because Canada is ran by the left. They are totally against everything I believe in. They are not my friends, they are yours. If they were ran by conservatives, you wouldn't care. Canada needs do their fair share in a lot of different areas. This is all about leverage in negotiations. I don't want the taxes I pay to go to subsidize (so to speak) Canadians. They wouldn't dream of doing such for Americans.
What, specifically, are you expecting of Canada in regards to how they treat us an an ally and trade partner? And not in regards to how they run their own internal politics, left or right. It seems this move from Trump has created some unity between Canadian conservatives and liberals, as an aside.

It may not be rational. But it is duplicitous to allow one side off the hook of their exact words but hold the other side to a different standard.

This is why all politicians are losers
So Joe Biden was held accountable for his exact words? Try again.

Anybody that’s against Tariffs, including the Fake News Wall Street Journal, and Hedge Funds, is only against them because these people or entities are controlled by China, or other foreign or domestic companies. Anybody that loves and believes in the United States of America is in favor of Tariffs. They should have never ended, in favor of the Income Tax System, in 1913. The response to Tariffs has been FANTASTIC!

BOOM! JD Vance just perfectly explained why Trump is taking such drastic actions with tariffs!

“The problem with the this whole idea that they're gonna retaliate is they have already been taking advantage of America for decades.”

“The retaliation is Donald Trump saying ‘no more’.

“We're not gonna be taken advantage of anymore, and I think it's important the president is doing what he's doing.”

So how has Canada been taking advantage of us for decades?

The “Tariff Lobby,” headed by the Globalist, and always wrong, Wall Street Journal, is working hard to justify Countries like Canada, Mexico, China, and too many others to name, continue the decades long RIPOFF OF AMERICA, both with regard to TRADE, CRIME, AND POISONOUS DRUGS that are allowed to so freely flow into AMERICA. THOSE DAYS ARE OVER! The USA has major deficits with Canada, Mexico, and China (and almost all countries!), owes 36 Trillion Dollars, and we’re not going to be the “Stupid Country” any longer. MAKE YOUR PRODUCT IN THE USA AND THERE ARE NO TARIFFS! Why should the United States lose TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN SUBSIDIZING OTHER COUNTRIES, and why should these other countries pay a small fraction of the cost of what USA citizens pay for Drugs and Pharmaceuticals, as an example? THIS WILL BE THE GOLDEN AGE OF AMERICA! WILL THERE BE SOME PAIN? YES, MAYBE (AND MAYBE NOT!). BUT WE WILL MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, AND IT WILL ALL BE WORTH THE PRICE THAT MUST BE PAID. WE ARE A COUNTRY THAT IS NOW BEING RUN WITH COMMON SENSE — AND THE RESULTS WILL BE SPECTACULAR!!!

Just love how uneducated both Americans and Canadians truly are.

Here are just some historic tariffs Canada hits America with.

Milk: 270%
Cheese: 245%
Butter: 298%
Chicken: 238%
Sausages: 69.9%
Barley seed: 57.8%
Bovine/meat: 26.5%
Cars: 25%
HVAC: 45%
Vacuums: 35%
Cable boxes: 35%
TVs: 45%
Steel: 25%
Aluminum: 45%
Copper: 48%

Take a guess how much financial aide the U.S. sends Canada EVERY YEAR and how much military defense $$$$ we provide?

BREAKING: Two of Canada's fastest-growing food companies are now planning to move their operations to the United States to avoid paying President Trump's tariffs.

Mid-Day Squares was initially planned to expand its factory in Montreal. However, with 70 percent of its sales in the United States, they are now considering expanding to Ohio, Wisconsin, and Missouri.

“We need the U.S. as a business. It’s critical.” - Mid-Day Squares Founder Jake Karls.

Flourish Pancakes is planning to do the same as well.

THE TARIFFS ARE WORKING!

Ok setting aside arguments on whether tariffs are good or bad etc, I’m curious what exactly the tariffs on Canada are trying to get accomplished.

The President says that the tariffs are designed to get the border secured and to stop drugs from coming into the country, and if you take that at its face value then maybe tariffs on Mexico make some sense, but I don’t understand the tariffs on Canada.

What specific actions is the President wanting to see from Canada (and Mexico too) that would lead him to determine that the tariffs can be removed?

The President has talked about tariffs as an effective way to get other countries to do something the US wants them to do, but it’s unclear to me what he’s wanting from Canada, so to me these tariffs feel awfully arbitrary and are creating tensions and a trade war with a country that should be our closest ally and it feels like this will only hurt citizens in both countries.

Looking for serious responses here, please and thank you.

When Canada talks about cutting off oil to America, let me break this down for you.

Below is a map of the pipelines that carry energy for Canada. As you can see many come into America. The one you need to pay attention to is the Energy East line. This was supposed to be built, but Canada's leftists canceled it because of "climate issues."

As you can see, the only way for the Western part of Canada to get oil to the Eastern part of Canada is to send it through America.

Trump knows EXACTLY what he is doing.

It’s been a while since I studied this (2015? Whenever the big pipeline license drama was going on) but IIRC this isn’t how import taxes on pipelines work. If the oil doesn’t stop here then it’s not an import. We import more oil from Canada than anywhere else in the world and with the current state of global demand with the Ukraine conflict, there’s ample outside market that they can take that to. Canada has much more leverage to hurt us than we do them when it comes to oil if this gets escalated to the point where we’re shutting down their transborder pipelines.

Glad I own a Subaru and don’t have to drive the truck but we feel fuel costs in everything, especially food and agriculture.

Futures up 45 points off the low. Took some profits, but staying long because I think the tariffs will be positive for the US.

Everyone remember what happened the first time Trump won.

On election night in 2016 when he won the market sold off bigly. Only to have a great rally over the next 4 years.

He’s right, they won’t. But neither will we. Nobody wins trade wars. Ever.
Yes they do. That is an idiotic statement. "Tariffs are a zero sum game" is true if it happens in a vacuum. But reality is not a vacumm and tariffs don't have to be a zero sum game. There are several papers out now, that you can use AI to help decipher, on this topic.

And, since we are the party of common sense i will help you out. Common sense tells you that if one economy dwarfs the size of another economy, they will win the trade war.

I think this is important information. Lets lay ALL the cards on the table for everyone to see. For example, almost every country uses tarifs. The LLM i consulted could not find a country that does not use tariffs at all.

It's time for us to stop protecting Canada with our military unless they pay billions for our protection.

For too long they've leeched off our super power status and failed to even build a top 20 country military. They're ranked 32.

Their Navy has 8200 regular forces and 4,100 primary reserve sailors. They have zero battleships, submarines, or any active aircraft carriers.

Why do we have to spend trillions to protect them when they put little effort or money into building a top world fighting force themselves?

BTW - I love Canadian people but their government is a joke. Trudeau has destroyed the country from within.

This is such a terrible tweet. She is a Bishop in the Episcopal Church. She doesn't run the ministries.

I love getting butthurt over a Christian asking someone to be kind to the poor and weak. Such a novel idea for a Christian.
MAGAs attacking a bishop for promoting the very sentiments that Jesus preached about tells me all I need to know about the "Christian right."

How do you define win? Will the American economy be "less harmed" than Mexico, Canada, and China? Yes. Will Americans be better off? No. I am all about targeted tariffs. I am all about common sense. But there is no common sense in these blanket tariffs.

Some of these wild claims being made about tariffs are laughable at best. This is probably (hopefully) a political stunt.
