I don't know.. Trudeau might just take this into stupid territory and make us hurt them. But if so, it's not going to last long. Trump is making a point right now, as long as that point is acknowledged and canada agrees to work with us in good faith, we will work with them. IMHO.

Mexico did the same thing in 2021, but didn't end up tanking the stock market beforehand. Props to Pres Sheinbaum, too, since she got Trump to agree to help crack down on arms trafficking into Mexico.

Genuine question id like to know: If a Chinese export goes through Canada (or Mexico) first, is it hit with a Chinese export tariff? I would imagine we’re smart enough to note the country of production, but who knows.
If that is a way around tariffs, you don’t have a choice but to place tariffs on Canada if you plan on raising them for a bunch of other countries too (which I assume to be the case).
I’ve made a couple comments in support of the trade deficit, so I’m not a tariff fan

Joking aside, this happens every few years. Mexico sends troops up to the border to assist with repelling border crossing, then after a bit of time they end up leaving. It happened in 2019 and 2021 - it's nothing new.

Assuming it's not being modified in Mexico/Canada/insert any other country, and is just passing through due to logistics reasons, then yes they'd pay the Chinese tariff. If it's stopping off in Mexico/Canada/etc to be assembled/disassembled/modified/etc then it will pay whatever that country's tariff is upon being exported to the US.

Sounds right. We do something similar with a device that is primarily manufactured in China, but then modified in an EU country.
In your scenario the items from china would still, in theory, be tariffed. But no one is naive to think that we catch all instances of that. Look no further than the DeepSeek drama last week. It's highly likely China was still getting NVDA chips through Singapore despite our export ban.

Yea I'm not sure why there's an opinion that 10k troops from Mexico to the boarder has any significance at all. Most people I see hyping this are generally the same people convinced that the Mexican government is corrupted by the cartels anyway, so this really means nothing at all to me.
This whole thing is utterly ridiculous. At best, President Trumps get a few meaningless talking points to pitch to his base. At worst, he manages to destabilize the world economy.
There just isn't a home anywhere for good old fashioned fiscal conservatism.
