Not because of anything in it, but evidently Francis Scott Key owned slaves and made at least one bad statement. I don't really know anything about him. Don't know if he was a murderer like Ben Tillman .

In an increasingly antiracist era when problematic iconography — ranging from Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben to even the Dukes of Hazzard General Lee car and country band Lady Antebellum’s name — is being reassessed, revised or retired, America’s national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” seems to be striking a wrong note.

Last week, protesters in San Francisco toppled a statue of the song’s composer, Francis Scott Key, a known slaveholder who once said that African-Americans were “a distinct and inferior race of people, which all experience proves to be the greatest evil that afflicts a community.”

It's not going to stop.

"One bad statement" seems to undersell the statement you posted IYAM...

It's not going to stop.
yet these protesters revere Mao and Lenin, who each are responsible for the deaths of millions and millions.

History shouldnt be white washed, and the whole story about these historical figures should be told ... but its the attempt to cancel these historical figures, combined with ridiculous things like cancelling Paw Patrol and the hypocrisy of honoring socialist, communists, and Marxists who are each responsible for plague, famine, mass incarceration, and mass death that keeps the reasonable and silent majority from listening to a discussion about potential reforms.

I'm not sure what you mean. Should I have been more forceful than "one bad statement"?

The quote is really despicable, but I really don't know anything about him. Should we drop the "Star Spangled Banner" as our National Anthem even if he was as bad a person as Ben Tillman? That was my point. The song seems pretty perfect to me and doesn't have any racial undertones to it. It is a glorious song. I have heard hundreds or thousands of singers of all races sing it and every time I hear it it makes me proud to be an American. Never once has it made me think about race or racism. In fact "the land of the free and the home of the brave" seems as clear & anti-racism as you can get.

Good Lord, deliver me. I truly don't think I can take any more. And this is actually a big part of the problem. The lunatics win bc the reasonable people just can't take it anymore. This National Anthem one seems really absurd to me, but not even close to BLM's assertion that statues and stained glass windows of Jesus must be destroyed.

I guess all of the blacks that has sung it over the years didn't think it was racist. If the left agrees with the ideology that's happening now it's going to get worse.

Hit the nail with that hammer.

This is never going to stop. People's entertain this stuff and often bend to it. Until people say no more and get a grip this will continue. History has been made by people with imperfect views and imperfect lives. That's the nature of humanity and instead of condemning every single mistake we should accept that reality, not just about historical figures but about all of us.

Agree. It's so weird to me that people today believe they have a right never to be offended or upset about something. I'm discriminated against daily and it's fine. It just makes me try harder. But then, I wasn't brought up to believe that the world owes me a perfect life.

About as many left-wingers idolize Mao and Lenin as right-wingers idolize Hitler. It's not a thing.
LOL
Early influences that shaped the ideology of fascism have been dated back to Ancient Greece. The political culture of ancient Greece and specifically the ancient Greek city state of Sparta under Lycurgus, with its emphasis on militarism and racial purity, were admired by the Nazis.
And in case you don't know the meaning of Fascism.

Fascism is a form of liberal government that is a type of one-party dictatorship. They work for a totalitarian one-party state. This aim is to prepare the nation for armed conflict, and to respond to economic difficulties. Fascism puts nation and often race above the individual.

Going to disagree with you.

they may not idolize the men (although, you can find numerous Mao, Lenin, Che, Maduro, Castro teeshirts at any "peaceful" protest"), but they certainly idolize to their beliefs and a system that has been tried numerous times in human history and has always ...ALWAYS ended in famine, disease, and death.

Is there a new island somewhere (with good weather) the good people can flee to?
Herschel Walker already said he'd pay for anyone that would like to leave the greatest (for now) country in the world.

“I have an idea… For all these people who don’t want any police, I’d love to meet with American Airlines, Delta, and Southwest and make a deal to fly them to countries that don’t have police. I want them to be happy!” Walker wrote.

What is truly ironic is listening to people in BLM and other groups justifying their violence by citing the violence of America's past. Isn't that the past they are trying to wipe away and discredit? So on one hand they use it as a reason for doing these things and on the other hand they use it as justification for the things they do. So which is it? They are total morons and we need to call them what they are and put them out of business.

If someone wants to march for the equal rights and treatment of all Americans, let me know and I will be there. I support that down to my last breath. However, I know that our country, while imperfect, is the best place on Earth to be and I would rather work to make it better than riot and protest to tear down reminders of all the progress we have made. But like I always say, this is what you get when you cede education to the left. We deserve this.

Do a little experiment and type Vladimir Lenin on Amazon. Now do Hitler.

@Daytontiger doesn't know what he is talking about, per usual.

LOL, but they are the panicky ones. Right.

It is. Yahoo got a bunch of angry people to click on it, so mission accomplished.

--Mr. DT
Well a soccer team in Tulsa, I think, will no longer play it before games because of a verse that is never played or sung, anyway. There are a lot of idiots speaking very loudly during this "movement".

My family owned slaves for multiple generations. I will do what’s right and kill myself
Exactly what I'm thinking. Slave owning was bad and we know that now, but it was part of the culture when it existed. When football is outlawed due to health concerns, everyone who ever played, coached or administered the game will be held accountable.

You guys are like the total SWEET SPOT for Fox News and right wing propaganda. The American way of life is CONSTANTLY UNDER ATTACK. And you've got to be always vigilant against those evil left-wingers. They can't wait to have total government takeover of all the private companies.

LOL, as said previously.

Enjoy your freakout

-deflect, moves conversation from ignorant statement
-gets emotionally angry per usual when people point out said ignorant statement

See you next time Mr. DT

Could we change the national anthem just because it sucks? America the Beautiful and God bless America are both superior songs.

When ignorant people call my statements ignorant, I'm at peace with it.

Good luck on your crusade to get Pearman fired.

The funny thing is I've received so much advice over my lifetime on how to handle exactly what white folks are going thru right now. How to feel when I'm being unfairly profiled or grouped or targeted. And they are right. White folks are in the cross hairs largely for stuff they individually didn't do. Stuff that people who look like them did. Stuff they've avoided all their life. Sounds like the story of my life. That great advice I used to receive on how to cope seemed so simple. Yet they won't do it. I guess when it's "your" country it's different.

I have some advice. Listen to each thing on the table. Reject the stupid stuff. Support the good ideas. Example. I support removing Tillman. I reject cancelling people who were simply slave owners. Now if they were vocal like Calhoun and said some not so nice things then the receipts will be read and handled. I will defend Thomas Green. I don't like changing the anthem. I'll call that a stupid idea. As someone stated, we already reject the verse that says the horrible thing so we've literally self corrected by not using the writers words he intended. It's not that hard. That's how you handle the slippery slope. Don't run down the slope. One step at a time. Just consider this approach. It's helped me a little. You're welcome everyone.

So you have no problem with these videos? I would assume you don't but your continued backing of the liberal Democratic party says you do.

Surely you are not serious! Also, I believe many that will give you likes have never heard or read this poem beyond the 1st page. As was the case with the Constitution, F.S. Key wrote very (2nd & 3rd verse) distinctive anti-Negro/Slaves sentiments in this poem! This poem was adopted as the national anthem in 1931 & the Racist comments were never denounced!
As with the Constitution, it will & should not be replaced! However the anti, racist sentiments Must & Should Be Amended!
Finally, save your pro American sentiments! I would challenge any family service & sacrifice to Our Country! Yes, we are 1 under,” The United States Of America!”

No.

There's nothing wrong with our great national anthem. And there's nothing wrong with our great American flag.

If these cancel culture son of a bitches don't like it, fine. They are free to move to a different country.

This shit is getting beyond ridiculous. Good grief.
