The United States Canal - The Gulf Of America - We are So Back

I'm not following all the faux outrage over the thought of doing something as inconsequential as renaming something. We do it with street signs, military bases, planets that become not planets, and all kinds of things. Why do we want a gulf named after a country who we fought with and beat. We waxed that ass in the Mexican-American war and then we had the Mexican Border War in the early 1900s and Mexico today is a violent place under the influence of drug cartels and struggling to be a functioning state. It is past time that we correct things and rename the Gulf appropriately. Time moves on and we need to live in the now.

Wow Brian Kasserstein. Impressive. However we are not talking about grocery prices , so stay on topic. We are talking about renaming things, which was a topic that i thought libs were very interested in.
OK, sure - while we're at it, I say we rename the magas to the brown shirts.

OBAMA was in it for renaming Mt McKinley to Mt Denali

so why any beef on renaming Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America

Renaming a name in geography happens all the time

I say a NATIONAL EDICT renaming it by legislation

Love the idea
Obama didn't re-name it. Denali was the original name the native Americans gave it.

The only reason Trump wants to call it Mt McKinley again is to erase anything Obama did - because he's a man baby.

Still on the weird nazi train? That bizarre strategy failed pretty miserably.
Au contrere, before it was because you said we were being hyperbolic. Now we have confirmation that we were right.

How many times did you guys say he would not behave like a dictator? Don't try to normalize this.

Confirmation? Just some words at this point. Let’s see what actually does. And none of those words have mentioned exterminating millions of people like the nazis. Only loons like @statepawdog ever believed he would do that.

No one is talking about extermination. But he hasn't even taken office yet and he and President Musk have already threatened several sovereign countries with military force, including some of our closest NATO allies. No matter what he actually does, this is not a good trajectory for a country known for respecting the boundaries of our friends.

So far, he seems to be modeling Putin - let's see where it ends.

Sure sure. Modeling Putin. I suppose he will start assassinating democrat rivals any minute now. Then kill 10K+ civilians in Denmark.

This shit is so stupid. Nazi, Putin, whatever. I mean really, really stupid.

There’s a big difference between those comparisons and being a bit of a bully to advance what he sees as American interests. Not my style, but not fvckin Hitler either.

I didn't make that leap but don't pretend like you know how it plays out either. He hasn't even taken office yet and he's already threatening our aliies with military force if they don't give us their land.

Would you have predicted that? I'm willing to bet you would have mocked us if we suggested that before the election.

you actually should be, since the deficit will explode if our credit rating gets worse.
Im worried about us defaulting on our debt exactly zero.

Obama said we don't negotiate over the debt and that is now the status quo for both parties. If someone breaks that agreement, they will pay at the ballot box.

um, if we don't pay our bills because we don't pass spending bills, we will explode our debt.

What's the logic behind renaming it the Gulf of America? It's been called the Gulf of Mexico for 400+ years, so what's the point of wanting to change it besides fodder for Salt Life dullards?

Trying to be serious for a second...

Who knows what Trump's actual reason for saying that is. I personally think there was a reason. But I obviously don't know the man.

But as far as what reasons could be: 1. red meat for his base to keep them engaged 2. emphasizing to world writ large that he's all the way in ... waaay in, on "America First" to add weight to his going in position when negotiating with anyone about anything (foreign or domestic) 3. Sending a specific reminder to little bro Mexico that they are little brother and are considered as such. Really the same as point #2 but specifically related to mexico. 3. Messaging to leadership in an expansionist China that the US is under new management.

The thought, serious or not, of "renaming the gulf" is also right on message and in direct support of the effort to shake people awake and have them question the status quo. Why can't America expand? Why can't we say Merry Christmas? Why do i have to accept that a dude playing sports or being in the locker room with my daughter is ok? Why can't we demand/coerce other nations to do more in their own or America's interest when part of every taxpayer's paycheck is being sent to them?

Like I was saying about how it will now be prickly to travel abroad for Americans.

FWIW Denali was its original name. Now trump wants to change it back and the powers to be in Alaska are saying no.

Lol, nope. these are the same weirdos that post that shit here. Guess how many I see in real life? Zero.

Guess how many Euros gave me a hard time this week when I was over there? Zero.

Sat next to a super gay black dude at the KLM Crown Lounge in Amsterdam yesterday. Had a very nice conversation. Was he worried about this white man with a semi-southern accent from the US? Of course not.

Heading to Dominican later this month. Think I will encounter any issues? Of course not.

Heading back to Europe 2-3 more times this year. Think I will encounter any issues? Of course not.

SOCIAL MEDIA IS NOT REAL LIFE

I will repeat
It won't be long before
He hasn't even started yet and I see posts like these everywhere.

I also said it would be "prickly" - I didn't mean our lives would be in danger - yet, lol

And for the record, I have been to Europe four times in the last few years and I have come into contact with quite a few people who think it's insane that we elected him and quizzed me about how it happened, particularly about how he could lose the popular vote and still win after being such a horrible person(to them).

Now he's literally acting like a dictator and threatening our allies while sucking up to Putin so we will not be that "shining city on a hill" to the rest of the world, the way it's going. He's not just our menace anymore - he's a menace to the world.

Let's just say I will want to make it clear that I'm not a Republican when I travel 😅
