Woody McCorvey...

I don’t let anyone use the word at my job no matter what color.

Yeah, neither does Dabo.

Hopefully Dabo doesn't say anything. He has nothing to apologize for or address. He handled it the way he felt was needed at the time.

I dont like the word. No matter who says it.

Let me ask this. Does the definition change depending on who says it?

Get out of here with logic. It's not welcome here.

Help me out, If a word was so demeaning and hurtful why would people use it ?
Help me out here. Have you ever made a mistake? The man apologized multiple times. The event happened 3 years ago. It’s time to move on.

IMO it's pretty simple

The history of the word is that it is a word used in a very derogatory manner by white people to demean black people. It was used in a very hateful way for a long time. Well then black people slightly changed the pronunciation of the word and started using it as a term of endearment. There are some white people who thinks this now gives them the right to use the word again. I'm not really sure I understand the logic there

You don't get to use a term in an extremely hateful manner for a long period of time and then get to start using it again when the victims turn around and adopt a variation of that word as their own. Now I know that neither you nor I are old enough to have been around when the N-word originated but it is pretty easy to respect the wishes of our fellow humans who find it offensive.

He knows all that dude. His point is that it’s ridiculous. No one should use it.

...Dabo doesn't even go to the restroom without consulting McCorvey. So, I'm certain he was the first person Dabo confided in when this incident happened. It's time for Woody to speak out. Also, just curious...did this incident take place the week leading up to the home game with Pitt?

Pitt was 2016. Incident 2017, didn’t lose regular season.

Can we all come to the following agreement about use of the word so the back and forth can stop?
  • In a perfect world, no one would use it. But of course we aren't in a perfect world.
  • POC can use the word. All others cannot without retribution. Even though you may think it is hypocritical, this is the rule of the land.
Like it or not, this is the way it is. Either accept it and move on or move the debate over its use to the Roundtable.

Now I know that neither you nor I are old enough to have been around when the N-word originated but it is pretty easy to respect the wishes of our fellow humans who find it offensive.

I partly understand this.

However, If three friends(2 black and one white) are standing around joking and having a conversation, and one black guy calls the other black guy the N word with "a" at the end no one has a problem. In fact it's cool, funny, or endearing.

So what if the white guy, in the same joking manner says the same word, also as a term of endearment(as I've seen explained on this site)?

If the black guys find that offensive, then who's racist in that scenario? I mean the white guy is saying the exact same word in the exact same usage, but because his skin is white he's a bad guy?

I'm not asking this in a confrontational way. I'm more looking for a explanation preferably from my black Tiger brothers on the site.

I've never used the word, and wouldn't but all this talk about the word, its' meaning, its' usage, etc. has me interested. I mean no offense to anyone, and this is asked out of a lack of understanding(ignorance I guess).

Friend, I almost always enjoy and respect your opinions.
This one is crap.

I am damn near old enough. My family owned slaves back in the day.
They were treated pretty well, by what I can determine.........but SLAVES????????
No. That ain't good.

Negro was the historical term and became "that word".
That was a sad time for our country.
Slaves have been around since mankind.
Of all colors and races.

Truth is, a person's color is the LEAST important thing about them.

It is absolutely ludicrous to imagine that a term, within one society/country, can mean separate things to separate people............UNLESS YOU DIVIDE THEM BY RACE!
Which, perfectly, perpetuates the problem.

Either the word is unacceptable or not.
The WORD.

Not who is using it.
Get rid of the WORD.

And stop defining people and what they can and can't do......or say......by race.

STOP the damn color definition!

Or expect all of this to continue.

Surely you have more self awareness than this....

My response was intentional to show the variations of whitesplaining and a belief that a demeaning word should still hold powers in your hands. Stop worrying about the N word. Don't say it, Don't worry about black people and word created by whites to belittle blacks. Just don't say it and we will have never a race issue with the word.

No problem. I don't say it. However black people shouldn't say it either. LOL @ whitesplaining, though, that made me laugh.

WHAT?

So, it's okay for some people to use it and others not?

Then, how the hell can we get rid of this word.

Talk about a double standard........

Come on, Man.
You're better than this.

What if HUMANS didn't use it?
History, History & History....

Prompting all the black dudes to come out and back you up - that's gonna be a bad look. Dabo is the leader. He's the one that makes far, far more money than anyone else. And he makes it primarily from the performance of black student athletes. It's time for Dabo to say something. When the hell has Dabo not wanted to talk about anything? And someone tell him to go a little deeper than "alexa, tell me about martin luther king" when he talks about overcoming racism.

The stakes are higher than we realize. This could take a turn and you'll see a hit to recruiting. Or maybe it blows over and all is well.

I disagree. The rule of the land is ever evolving. A word so strong, it can bring people to kill, needs to disappear. It will die off eventually, but it may take a 1000 years without a concerted effort. If you just keeping accepting it can be a term of endearment if you have the correct skin color, it will never die.

Speaking as A Black Man, Raised in Jim Crow South, Decendent of Slaves & An American! The Word Hurts! When Anyone Use It, It Hurts! Does it Hurt More when White People Use it in Any Context; Without A Doubt!
Do I wish everyone would respect the History, especially Blacks...Without A Doubt!

By the way, How Do You Treat Slaves “Pretty Well?”

Just trying to figure out the ground rules-
Since I am Caucasian - is it acceptable for me to use whitie, cracker or honky but not people of color?

Does it have anything to do with minorities vs majority?

We really have a descendent of slave owners in this thread (slaves were treated pretty well though so all good) who thinks that his opinion on what black people should and shouldn’t say and how they should feel about a word used by white people to dehumanize them carries any weight and should be posted in a public forum. Incredible!

You think he's the only one on here who's family owned slaves?

Stats are different but up to 32% of all southern families owned slaves (lowest I saw using Google-fu is 1.4%). So guess what? Up to a 1 in 3 chance yours did if you grew up in the South.

Not commenting on the rest of it but I wanted to bring perspective to this one part of the argument.

As far as I know, mine did not. But I do not know for certain. I don't know if the records even exist anymore. But that doesn't change who I am as - until someone invents a time machine - there's nothing I can do about it now.

Hogwash. Love it when a PC Lib crafts an argument justifying their hypocrisy. Happens all the time. Oh and you offend me using the term black people. I believe it is African American. Black people is a mislabel and racist.

the fact that his family has that history wasn’t the most disturbing thing about what he said (though that fact is of course the most disturbing part of our reality). It was his whitewashing of that history that was so reprehensible.

Well this is gonna blow your mind. I'm MAGA AND I don't think it's OK for white people to use the N-word

I hear what you're saying and I agree. But it seemed that the fact that the poster's family owned slaves was itself an issue. As stated, I wanted to bring perspective to that part.

The ignorance in this thread is utterly astounding.

Guess what white people. It's not your choice. If the black community wants to use the n word as a term of endearment, it's not your place or choice to tell them no, or to believe you should have the right to use it too.

All the problems in the world and y'all are freaking out about not being able to say the N word, because it's not equal.

Just like 95% of Maga’s.
The white extremist groups gather peacefully in Michigan. The left extremist groups murder, steal, and burn cities.
Also love how a bunch of white folks at a lake in Missouri is the worst thing ever. Cause of social distancing. Yet the main stream media cheers on mobs of thousands who are literally rubbing elbows. Makes perfect sense.

You misunderstand my post. I never said it should be accepted as a term of endearment. People can and should work to discontinue its use. But the fact remains that right now, black people can use the term without retribution and white people can't. These are the facts of the case and they are undisputed.

Why? Because we give some money to IPTAY and pay 10 bucks a month for a message board?

No I don’t care if anyone speaks out about the Pearman thing but asking former players, assistant coaches and administrative officials to speak out when the head coach hasn’t seems a bit odd

This quote really sticks out to me in all of this mess.....so what's the deal? Either we all can say it or we can't. It really hasn't changed much since Richard Pryor talked about this in the 70s. If not, can we please put out a list of words that white people can't use but blacks can so we can avoid this in the future. TIA

“The first thing (Swinney) said was we shouldn’t be using that type of language in the first place, which is true, but at the same time, I was talking to one of my teammates — one of my African-American brothers,” Greenlee said. “That’s just how we talk." There was nothing meant by that, and nobody was talking to coach Pearman at this point.

I suspect this is not currently in Dabo's hands. It is likely not his decision to make at the moment. His opinion matters for sure, but there are people above him who will want this handled a certain way. Especially given the likelihood this never made it up the line to begin with.

It is entirely possible there isn't agreement on the course to take, obviously i am speculating and that can be dangerous to do.

So as much as the lag in response may be distasteful to some, i would prefer they get the facts and all get on the same page before they try to address it.

Yikes is so Ice. I could just picture him working at Starbucks fixing up drinks with glasses on and a nasally, high voice, saying Oh Yikes- I drank regular milk instead of Soy.
