**** ⚽ No. 2 Clemson v. Wofford | Tuesday | 7 pm | ACCNX****

Coming off our most complete performance of the season in the 6-1 victory over ACC foe Syracuse, No. 2 Clemson (10-2-2, 5-2-0) welcomes our last non-conference opponent of the regular season Wofford (6-5-2) to Historic Riggs Field on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

First, to put a bow on that magnificent performance against the Orange, man, everything just worked. Sure, it helped when Syracuse’s Michael Acquah and his five assists on the season went out with a straight red in the 15th minute, but we were already up 1-0.

Clemson had Alex Meinhard’s breakaway from a brilliant pass from Joran Gerbet to open the scoring 108 seconds into the game. Then, as the Tigers have been want to do, they scored in bunches.

Wahabu Musah finished another great cross from Remi Okunlola to double the lead and then Clemson added three more goals in the next 11-minutes, 26-seconds. The brace and hat trick from Meinhard made it 4-0 before a PK from Cuse made it 4-1 in the 36th minute. Goals from Tyler Trimnal and Antonio Illuminato capped the scoring.

We have scored 12 goals in the last two games with 10 different goal scorers, while getting 23 players into each game for some minutes. Gerbet and Okunlola each have had three assists the last two games as well.

We are rolling right in time for the postseason. We are now 5th in the country in goal differential at +25, which is third in the ACC behind Duke and Pitt. During our five-game win streak, we are +15 in goal differential.

Prick(s) of the Game is going – and I mean no offense to them – the broadcast booth. Yes, it was a blowout, and it can be hard to fill dead air – I’ve been there. But goodness, quit trying to make fetch happen by insisting Cuse could get back in the game. Also, I don’t think they were in the booth – they were doing it remotely, which is even harder.

IMHO, play by play person in soccer should be doing a majority of the talking explaining who has the ball. Color commentator should pipe in occasionally. We don’t need 90+ minutes of constant talking.

So, now Wofford comes to town. The Terriers did draw 0-0 at Wake on Oct. 8, but also lost to ETSU, Longwood and Furman since then with wins against UNCG and Mercer. Just need to TCB and move on to the regular season finale at Virginia Tech.

The Terriers have only scored 11 goals in 13 games with Thaddeus Dennis, Magnus Kjoller and Declan Mettee each with two goals. Jakob Andersson has four assists.

Looking at the final week of ACC regular season play, the Tigers are well positioned, but the job isn’t done yet. Pitt is the only team that has clinched a top 4 seed and is locked into a top 2 seed. We are the only team that can knock them from the perch, but would need some help.

The Panthers sit with 18 points and a +10 goal differential (second tiebreaker behind head-to-head). Clemson is second with 15 points (+7), UNC at 13 (+3) and at 12 points are Stanford (+2) and Duke (+2). A draw at VT would clinch the second seed.

There are still nine teams that are still mathematically eligible for a top 4 seed. But Clemson could also finish 5th with a loss at VT and wins from UNC (v. BC), Stanford (v. Cal) and Duke (v. ND) on Friday. As long as one of those teams doesn’t win, we will be a top 4 seed no matter the result in Blacksburg.

I’ll save some of the RPI stuff for Thursday and what it looks like for the national tournament at the moment.

On Tuesday, Clemson’s Jackson Wrobel will be going up against his old teammates after transferring in from Wofford before last season. He scored six goals and had seven assists as a sophomore at Wofford in 2022 in 17 games – that will get you some attention, making the First Team All-Southern Conference.

At Clemson, the senior from Madison, Ala., kept up his prowess for scoring and assisting with four goals and three assists in just 23 games and six starts. He’s averaging 1.63 points per 90 minutes in his career at Clemson – which is even higher than those big numbers he had his sophomore year at Wofford.

Go Tigers! Beat Wofford!

******So let me tell you about our intern

Actually, let The State's Chapel Fowler tell you about our intern Toby Corriston.

My man is quite the athlete, so much that he was an emergency pitcher this past summer for the Harrisonburg Turks.

The conversation happened four months ago in a random visitors’ dugout in Virginia, but Clemson student Toby Corriston remembers it like yesterday. Corriston, at this point, was wrapping up his internship as the social media coordinator and sports information director for the Harrisonburg Turks, a summer collegiate baseball team that plays dozens of games across Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley region every June and July. And on this night, “we were getting killed,” Corriston said, something like 14-2. As the Staunton Braves kept piling up runs and extending the game, Corriston and the Turks’ pitching coach, Matt Majewski, started commiserating in the dugout.

Harrisonburg was already down a few pitchers from its opening day roster, when it had 13 available. Now they were rapidly rotating through guys against Staunton, and some of them were approaching pitch counts that came with league-mandated rest periods. On top of that, the Turks were about to play back-to-back doubleheaders the next two days, a four games in 48 hours crunch brought on by various rain-outs. Long story short: Harrisonburg needed more pitchers. Badly. “I don’t know who we’re going to throw,” Majewski said. “I can pitch for you guys,” Corriston said. Majewski paused. “Are you joking?” he said.

Corriston wasn't joking.

Staying in downtown Greenville this weekend...recommendations please.

We are in our 40s and are looking for a getaway without our daughter. 😁

1) What's the best hotel to stay at downtown?

2) What's the best food and bar options right downtown? We like to bar hop some at night...we also like great steaks! We've done Hall's so anything else downtown you recommend?

3) Where's the best place to watch the game Sat night?

Any other recommendations would be appreciated!

Thanks guys!

Heading to Clemson this weekend... what highway do I choose to sit in traffic on?

With 40 closed for the foreseeable future, I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for paths that don't include Atlanta Friday afternoon traffic this week? I don't really think there's a way around Asheville that makes much sense... but many of you are way more well traveled than I am.

(FWIW, my travel inconveniences are not meant to make less of the devastation in that area)

HS football

Got a big 2A matchup in Saluda Friday night between #2 Saluda and #1 Batesburg. Winner prob gets home field throughout playoffs. Almost wish I could go to experience the atmosphere. Any Saluda or Batesburg people on here let me know who wins and why. Haven't seen Saluda play but I have seen Batesburg. The QB RB and WR are pretty good. The defense is not too bad but the offense is legit good

SEC, Big 10, Big 12, and ACC this year

I find it very interesting this year regarding each conference. Is the SEC elite this year or are they are bunch of decent teams, but not great teams that are overrated? Is the Big 10 strong at top but weak overall? Is the Big 12 just a 3 trick pony? Does the ACC really have 4 legitimate playoff contenders?

SEC
LSU lost to USC (Real one) which isn't very good, but barely beats S. Carolina., got crushed by TX AM
AL beat UGA but then lost to Vandy and TN and almost lost to SC
TN beats AL but then loses to ARK
UGA beats us, but loses to AL and beats TX
TX AM loses to ND, but beats LSU
Ole Miss loses to KY and LSU
TX loses to UGA and struggles with Vandy
Arkansas loses to OK ST., but beats TN and barely loses to TX AM
SC loses to AL, LSU and Ole Miss, but beats OK
Florida got smashed by Miami by more than TX AM, and FL almost upset TN.

Is the SEC elite this year or are they are bunch of decent teams, but not great teams that are overrated? It is sure looking like a bunch of decent teams, but not any Elite or great teams. Most of them have a bad loss already (against an unranked team). UGA smashed TX like they smashed us in the 2nd half. To me, they are best team in this league. However, TN could knock them off. I would have Clemson right there with any SEC team not named UGA right now based off what I have seen. Miami has been challenged lately by VT, Louisville, and Duke. VT lost a close one to Vandy who beat AL. Louisville has lost to ND, Miami, and SMU all Highly RANKED TEAMS. Duke lost to SMU in a close one and GT. I could see 3 to 4 SEC teams making it in, but time will tell. The polls keep pumping them up as ranked vs. ranked games so people's judgment and eyeballs are watching these games. I haven't been too impressed with many of these teams. They are very inconsistent.

Big 10
Penn State is unbeaten. Almost lost to USC, but didn't
Ohio State - Lost to Oregon
Oregon - Unbeaten, close games with Ohio State and Boise State, Cal beat Oregon State worse than Oregon BTW
Illinois - Shine finally came off against OR. They barely escaped Purdue and they took care of business against some overrated mid major Big 10 schools
Indiana - unbeaten, They haven't played a soul yet and are 8-0. We know nothing about them right now except that they have murdered low tier Big 10 schools that aren't very good

Is the Big 10 strong at top but weak overall? It seems like the Big 10 is weak overall as a conference. Their best team came close to losing to Boise ST. They beat the doors off of ILL and also beat Ohio St. Penn St has kind of played OK but not that special but are winning. I could see only 2 Big 10 teams really deserving any spot in the playoff. The Big 10 really is weak overall this year. They will have a bunch of bowl teams that probably do fine, but they aren't a great league.

Big 12
BYU - Escaped SMU early in the year before QB change. Close games vs. OK St and Baylor. Not a very tough schedule
Iowa St. - Barely beat Iowa and UCF. Really wimpy schedule.
Kansas St. - All over the place. Got murdered by BYU, escaped Colorado, Tulane and KS with wins. A little tougher schedule but haven't been to great.
CO - Lost to Nebraska and Kansas ST., No good wins.

Is the Big 12 just a 3 trick pony? The Big 12 is really hard to determine if ANY of these teams are good because the league is so bad from top to bottom. The top 2 teams appear to have a pretty darn easy path to going undefeated. Iowa St does need to get by Kansas St. That game will most likely determine which team plays BYU in the championship game. To me this is by far the worst league top to bottom that I watched this year.

ACC
Miami - Destroyed Florida, Close calls with Duke, Louisville and VT but all wins, not to tough of a schedule
Clemson - Got whipped in the 2nd half by UGA, but destroyed everyone else on their easy schedule
Pitt - Beat Cincy and WV and everyone on their easy schedule so far, tough ones coming up with CL, Louisville and SMU
SMU - Lost a close one to BYU early in the year, won a close one against Duke, won a close one against Louisville, crushed most other teams on schedule

Does the ACC really have 4 legitimate playoff contenders? If they were in the SEC with the records they have, all would be in the top 10. However, the ACC plays a very weak schedule this year. We have 4 strong top 4 teams, a decent middle in VT, Louisville, BC, Duke, GT and Syracuse a really bad bottom in Stanford and FSU and some average to below average teams in CAL, NC ST., UNC, UVA, and WF. The problem this year has been the schedule. SMU, Miami and CL don't play each other this season. Clemson's only game was a 2nd half blow out to UGA. All others were cake walks. However, that will change considerably with VT, Louisville, Pitt and S. Carolina on the schedule. Pitt's schedule will get much tougher going forward with CL, SMU, and Louisville. It will be fun to watch it all play out one game at a time. The answer to the question IMO is that YES, the ACC has 4 legitimate College football playoff teams this year, The Big 10 has 4, The Big 12 has 3, The SEC has 4 left that don't have 2 losses. However, all have 1 loss, so that could spell a problem for them very soon.

Other
ND - Lost to N. Illinois, Won a close one against Louisville, Crushed Navy, Beat TX AM early. Overall, their schedule is trash this year for the most part. TX AM is making them look good.
Boise St. - Lost a close one to OR, Also beat Washington St., and beat all of the easy teams on their schedule. No reason they shouldn't win the rest of their games.

Boise St seems like a shoe in for the At large spot if they win out unless ARMY wins out and beats ND,Navy, and wins the AAC championship and is undefeated.
ND will walk into the playoffs with 1 less game than everyone and a really weak schedule. They shouldn't have rewarded them so high this week with a win against sorry ass Navy. The only teams with a pulse left on their schedule are ARMY and USC.

QB Baker, S Yoing, DL Campbell and WR Murph

How sweet would it be to close with these 4 guys? Wont hapoen though. I have heard that Campbell is going to decide between UT and us and is still thinking Clemson. Young seems like he will choose Clemson but who knows. Murph seems like a gamecock lock but giving us a real chance. Baker hasnt been contacted but seems like a late add if UNC falls and Brown leaves. Dont see any OL in the mix. Probably will push it out until next year unless a decommitt happens somewhere.

So we may get none, 1, 2, or all of the guys above. That is this years recruiting. Haha.
