College football betting, odds: Early season matchups to monitor (CLEM-DUKE notes)

-----

Clemson -12 at Duke (O/U 57.5)

Clemson’s offense was a meme in 2022, finishing 66th in explosive plays. Dabo Swinney may have floundered in finding the solution during the season, but I give him a ton of credit for getting his guy. Enter Riley from TCU. Riley should be the perfect pairing for QB Cade Klubnik, bringing the Tigers' passing game back to relevancy.

The Tigers also get 80% of their offensive line back to protect their sophomore signal-caller, and a defense that should improve with an elite linebacking corp. Duke was a big surprise, but I think Clemson comes out trying to bury a disappointing 2022 with a statement win in Week 1. Hopefully, this one stays under 14. -- Mark Drumheller - Yahoo! Sports

Woke Cracker Barrel

Yep... the company that banned LBGQ folks from working there and fired employees that they found out are gay has now gone woke. They had a rocking chair on their front porch with rainbow slats. I bet the groomer sit there when families come in and offer to let the kids "sit on their laps".

24 Class Projection

After today’s MMI I was thinking about how the class will finish up. Reading tea leaves and making a few projections, here’s my best guess:

QB - Lagway (obviously a projection but I always felt like he loved it here and left the door open. Just a gut feel.)
RB - EZ
WR- Wesco, Moore, Matthews, Staley (again a bit of a projection but I have a feeling we lose Spector, Taylor goes pro in baseball, Stellato leaves and maybe even Collins declares early. Tink to DB. I think there will be room and we cycle back to Staley.)
TE - Bentancur
OL - Westphal, Satterwhite, Poe. I think it’s possible we could pick up Uini too. These are listed in order of who I think is most likely.

DE - Houston, Nichols. (This is the biggest guess for me.)
DT - Brown-Shuler, Thompson
LB - Brown, Woodaz (possible Simmons if room)
CB - Feagin, Gipson
S - Dixon, Jones (I think it’s possible we bring in Hampton if there’s room)
EDIT: K - Hauser

That puts us at 20-22 I think. Thoughts?

ESPN Analyst Destroys Colleague for Race Baiting

Now this is rich!

By Anthony Scott Mar. 7, 2023 2:40 pm
Former NBA star and now sports analyst J.J. Redick recently called out his ESPN colleague for race-baiting.
During a recent airing of the ESPN sports talk show First Take, Redick slammed former NBA champion and now ESPN analyst, Kendrick Perkins for claiming NBA MVP voters have a racial bias when it comes to black basketball players.
Perkins previously claimed on First Take that if Denver Nuggets’ Center Nikola Jokic wins the MVP again it’s because he’s white.
In response to Perkin’s previous comments Redick stated, “What we’ve just witnessed is the problem with this show where we create narratives that do not exist in reality. The implication, what you are implying, that the white voters are that vote on NBA are racist. ”
As Redick was talking Perkin’s would close his eyes and look up and start speaking over Redick.

Per Outkick:
JJ Redick finds Kendrick Perkins’ views on NBA voters being racist absolutely disgusting.
Perkins has of late, attempted to claim NBA MVP voters must be racist because only three players outside the top 10 of season scoring leaders have ever won the MVP since the 1990s: Steve Nash, Nikola Jokic, and Dirk Nowitzki.
Apparently, that’s a sign MVP voters must be racist, and if Nikola Jokic wins again, it’s because he’s a white dude and nothing more.
Nikola Jokic has won the MVP award the last two years and this year he is in the running to win it a third team.
As of right now Jokic is averaging a triple double and has the Denver Nuggets in first place in the Western Conference.

1.5 billion dollars

According to an Ohio state insider, if the ACC stays in the same agreement it has then FSU, Clemson & Miami will have about 1.5 billion less to spend the next 10 years then Ohio state.

Wow...

I can see it from both sides. I fully support what the 7 ACC schools are doing. FSU Game Ticket Advice

A little context- I graduated from Clemson in ‘21 and now I’m down in Gainesville for dental school. I’ve, unfortunately, had to accept that in the adult/professional school world things have to be planned way in advance, football games are a real luxury, and I’m prepared to skip a few meals to fit this budget. It’s painful.

Regardless, me and seven of my buddies have booked plane tickets and are locked in to go, but haven’t bought tickets yet. Stubhub right now has tickets at $200 a pop plus fees. We’re debating on whether to go ahead and bite the bullet, or if we should hold out for the single game tickets to drop. If anyone has any insight or advice, it would be greatly appreciated. We’ll be sure to have a big time tailgate going so open invite if anyone wants to drop by!

Early Football Previews and Predictions: Game 1 vs. UNC

By: Caleb Alexander - Gamecockscoop.com

We are officially 82 days away from the beginning of football season, and though that seems like quite a long way, it will be here before you know it. As the 2023 season approaches, it's never too early to take a deep dive into the Gamecocks' first opponent. This year, South Carolina will open up against the North Carolina Tar Heels, an opponent that has given the Gamecocks some thrilling matchups over the years. The Tar Heels have been historically dominant, securing victories in 29 out of the initial 40 matchups. Nevertheless, since 1967, the tide has turned in favor of South Carolina, with the Gamecocks outpacing North Carolina 13-6. Here's an early look at what to expect from the Tar Heels this season.

The 2022 Season

The Tar Heels had a somewhat mixed 2022 season, finishing 9-5 overall and 6-2 in the ACC. They were crowned ACC Coastal Division champions but lost the ACC Championship game against Clemson and the Holiday Bowl against Oregon. As you all remember, they ended the 2021 season with a loss to the Gamecocks in the Duke's Mayo Bowl, so there's no doubt they'll be looking for revenge. 2022 saw the Tar Heels entering the season with a bit more subdued expectations, but they still had some quality wins, including knocking off Wake Forest to secure the Coastal division in a game where QB Drake Maye threw for 448 yards and three touchdowns. Mack Brown, who will be 72 at the time of kickoff, has been said to possibly have his best Tar Heel team yet, thanks to some key returning players and a few notable new additions from the transfer portal.

Tarheels on Offense

North Carolina's offense is its undeniable strength, anchored by the dynamic quarterback Drake Maye. The early season matchup of Maye and Gamecock QB Spencer Rattler should be circled on several NFL Scouts' calendars. After finishing second nationally in total offense per game (358.5) last season, Maye returns with the hope of leading the Tar Heels to an ACC title. Despite losing his top two wide receivers from last season, he has a couple of promising transfers in Nate McCollum (Georgia Tech) and Tez Walker (Kent State) ready to step up, along with a talented trio of tight ends who combined for 1,087 yards and eight touchdowns last season.

The Tar Heels' ground game should not be overlooked. With running back Elijah Green (558 yards, eight touchdowns) leading the charge, this could be the deepest position on the team. The offensive line will have a critical role in providing Maye time to work his magic and ensuring the Gamecocks' defense doesn't get too comfortable in the backfield. There's little doubt that UNC is going to score points against nearly every opponent they face, the question will be can the Gamecocks keep pace against the Tarheels?

Tarheels on Defense

On the other side of the ball, the Tar Heels have a fair share of question marks. Last year's defense struggled mightily, ranking last in the ACC in both yards and points allowed. The defensive line failed to live up to expectations, and the secondary lost six players to the transfer portal. This season, they are under pressure to step up their game significantly.

The linebacking corps, headlined by Cedric Gray and Power Echols who both made more than 100 tackles last season, will play a crucial role. The front seven, which struggled to get behind the line last season, will have to ramp up their aggression and start making plays. The addition of transfer cornerbacks Armani Chatman (Virginia Tech) and Alijah Huzzie (ETSU) will bolster the secondary and fill the gaps left behind by last year's departures. That said, Rattler and the Gamecocks receiving corps should have some opportunities against this defense, and I expect them to capitalize.

Way Too Early Prediction

I'll revisit these predictions the week before the actual game, but it's always fun to start shaping a season-long outlook before fall camp begins in August, and then see how that evolves once real football starts.

For this one, I expect a high-scoring affair with both offenses showing their firepower. South Carolina will have to manage North Carolina's potent passing game and look to exploit their defensive vulnerabilities. I anticipate the Gamecocks using their balanced offensive attack to keep the Tar Heels' defense on their toes and exploit any weaknesses they find.

Final: South Carolina 35 ------ North Carolina 34

While it may be a nail-biter of a game, I anticipate the Gamecocks to capitalize on some key plays down the stretch and eke out a victory in their season opener, setting a positive tone for their SEC play and setting the stage for an exciting 2023 season.

**** Basketball recruiting nugget ****

A couple of basketball recruiting nuggets to pass along ...

Clemson is set to play host tomorrow to two significant official visitors.

Concord (N.C.) Cannon School four-star shooting guard Austin Swartz and Little Rock (Ark.) Parkview four-star forward Dallas Thomas will both be in town, per Tigerillustrated.com sources.

Clemson was among the first in on Swartz, who is a teammate of the brother of former Clemson defensive end K.J. Henry. A lot of folks have considered him a stock-riser through the offseason, with Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Georgia, Indiana, St. John's, FSU, Georgetown, Maryland, Notre Dame and Texas A&M all involved.

Thomas, who goes by the nickname "Slim," is down to Clemson, LSU, Memphis and Missouri.

Sammy Brown

Has been named Max Prep's 2022-2023 male athlete of the year. Is a 5 * by every other recruiting service but Rivals. Most services have him as the No.1 player in Ga. and the No. 1 LB. But as usual, Rivals which is to the $EC what the MSM is to the Democrats does not have him listed in their top 20 and has other players from Ga. listed higher. We all know that if he had committed to an $EC scholl he would be listed higher.

I am doing the initial legwork on setting up a little Newberry County Steelers Club for the coming season, in part because I like the Steelers and in part because the lack of options for hut hut watching on Sundays in Newberry is lacking.
