Clemson getting $102M for a vet school

Had not seen this mentioned....state budget approved this week.

South Carolina House members and senators reached an agreement on the state’s $13 billion budget Thursday, barely 24 hours after a tense meeting where both sides appeared to be out of patience.

Thursday’s meeting was all smiles and jokes. The key sticking point — how much money to give Clemson University to make significant progress on the state’s first veterinary school — went to the Senate, which set aside $102 million. The House spending plan had about $8 million.

Republican Senate Finance Committee Chairman Harvey Peeler announced the deal, ticking off joint accomplishments like around $100 million toward a continuing effort to lower state income tax rates, this time from 6.5% to 6.4% as well as salary increases for almost all state employees and most state law enforcement officers and teachers.

“And something that is near and dear to my heart, we funded a new school of veterinary medicine at Clemson University,” a smiling Peeler said.

Swinney Camp Insider 8

CLEMSON -- Another strong batch of prospects on hand for the Saturday edition of the Dabo Swinney camp.

We wrote this morning that defensive ends coach Lemanski Hall has done a nice job of staggering the offered names on the 2025 board.

Roll in one at a time, and that affords premium time with recruit and family.

Greensboro (N.C.) Grimsley four-star Bryce Davis comes Sunday, and College Park (Ga.) Woodward Academy four-star London Merritt was in Friday.

Today's guest, in our estimation, should join Davis as a top-of-the-board target.

Norfolk (Va.) Maury four-star Ari Watford worked out in the morning session.

Watford (6-5, 235), ranked No. 80 nationally by Rivals.com, passed the premium eyeball test.

There's an agility drill where defensive ends start lying down, then spring up and do quick lateral steps over bags, then burst forward and turn to run in the direction pointed by the coach.

Watford demonstrated the flexibility and explosive spring you're hoping to see from someone of his advanced physical stature.

His only past visit was a quick swing through, so today accounts for his first extended look at Clemson. He and his parents will spend the afternoon touring the campus.

Last month, Watford cited Virginia Tech, UGA, Penn State, South Carolina and Notre Dame as the schools doing the best job recruiting him.

Our expectation is that Clemson is about to enter the chat.

=========================

The other notable new defensive line visitor was Athens (Ga.) Prince Avenue Prep defensive tackle Christian Garrett.

Garrett (6-4, 290) had expressed the intent to come Sunday, but just got the date wrong.

UGA, Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina and Georgia Tech offered in the spring.
Based on our initial observations and intel, Garrett will probably settle into the top half of the group coming out of the summer.

Good body composition, uses his hands well and bears closer resemblance to what Clemson has in its room from a physical standpoint.

=========================

Another prospect we walked away thinking we'll be tracking was the new offensive line candidate referenced yesterday, Addison (Texas) Trinity Christian Academy's Jaylan Beckley.

Beckley (6-4, 285) worked out Saturday after spending Friday surveying the scene.

For context, he's not quite as tall as, say, 6-5 Dietrick Pennington.

But odds are that he's going to fill into a 310-pounder once his upper body comes along, and we think he profiles as a solid interior line candidate.

zXEkEor.jpg

The bend and body are there, and there's a nice developmental arc in front of him.

His market will escalate as his in-state schools respond to the attention afforded him by the out-of-staters.

Beckley picked up an offer Thursday in his visit with Georgia. LSU offered last week, joining Mississippi State, Houston and Duke.

Clemson should have a prominent seat at the table if it so chooses.

=========================

A significant safety candidate spent Saturday afternoon on campus.

Monroe (N.C.) four-star Jordan Young worked out for Mickey Conn.

Young (6-0, 180), ranked No. 195 in the country, is listed as an athlete by the network.

Alabama, Notre Dame, Florida State, Tennessee and South Carolina offered during the spring.

=========================

Cincinnati (Ohio) Withrow 2026 receiver Chris Henry Jr. arrived on campus midway through the Saturday morning session.

Henry (6-5, 185) profiles as a high-end talent when the rankings time comes, and in just walking around and standing near the receiver group, his size and length jump out.

As noted, he is the oldest son of late Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chris Henry. After Henry's death in 2009, his former college and NFL teammate, Adam "Pacman" Jones, became his adoptive father.

Ohio State offered last summer and is logically considered the heavy favorite. Georgia, Notre Dame, Tennessee, USC, Penn State, Michigan and Texas A&M are among his offers.

Henry was accompanied by new 2025 receiver teammate Quinton Simmons (6-1, 170), who has offers from Michigan, Penn State, Louisville, Kentucky, Boston College, West Virginia and Virginia Tech.

=========================

A few other notes Saturday ...

*** Belton (S.C.) BHP four-star running back Marquise Henderson joined the running back group Saturday moring and worked out alongside Lynchburg (Va.) Liberty Christian four-star offer Gideon Davidson.

Henderson (5-11, 170) didn't score an offer from South Carolina's camp the day before but has been involved with Virginia Tech and Vanderbilt.

Good quickness and cutting ability. Adding strength in the lower body along with building the upper body is the next step in his progression and figures to be important in building his offer list.

*** The top wideout performance from the morning session, in our estimation, belonged to Buford (Ga.)'s Jordan Allen. Allen is short (5-7 to 5-8, 170 pounds), but the compact build helps him get in and out of breaks and abruptly change direction effectively and efficiently.

*** Kennesaw (Ga.) North Cobb four-star senior running back commitment David Eziomume is on campus supporting his high school quarterback.

*** Warner Robins (Ga.) Houston County four-star quarterback Antwann Hill Jr. is to throw in the afternoon workout session.

2020 CFP Natty LSU replay on right now.

ETN is averaging 7.7 yards per carry

7 Carries for 54 yards and ripping runs off

Tee Higgins just took the end around reverse 36 yards for a TD to go up 17-7. The team is dripping swaggy sauce in endzone at 10:38 in the 2nd quarter.

It looked like clemson could go all out ball control for most of the game to keep the LSU offense on the side line.

ETN should have had no less than 25 Carries in this game….and probably 30 Carries.

Lsu wasn’t down by double digits all year…

lucious lyon wtf GIF

Clemson should and could have won this game…lsu caught multiple breaks and the ball bounced their way. TL was off and the defense could have make a few back breaking plays.

Next drive chase pushes off Terrell for the deep ball…lsu scores with a 3rd down burrow scramble at 9:17 in the 2nd

J Ross and Tee vs Jefferson and Chase.

Tony abandoned the run…

2024 Wide Receiver Top 15

In my view, WR is the most important position in the 2024 class. I’d like to see our offer sheet triple over the next month as I think we simply have to have a good class. To that end, below are my top 15 WRs - my WR board if you will. My priorities: toughness, speed, catching with hands, variety of size/skills/where they line up, and regional proximity. You’ll see a heavy dose of TX (hoping Riley can help keep and even grow that pipeline), but mostly east coast and some midwest. But nothing out west. Thoughts? Additions? Subtractions?

Dreylon Miller | TX - perfect size of WR we are looking for. Reminds me of my prospect crush last cycle: Johntay Cook. He’s shifty, 6-1/6-2 so can play all over. Looks like a jamaar chase type (not as good), but in that mold. WR1 on my board.
Login to view embedded media Terrance Moore | FL - for our “bigger WR” take, I like him a lot more than Taylor. Granted, so does everyone else. He’s blowing up. And for good reason. Ultra smooth, tall, but isn’t limited to only sideline fades. Fast for his size. Did I say smooth?
Mylan Graham | IN - another slightly taller kid, but he’s fast and he’s quick for his size. Good hands and tough. Not just a boundary WR, goes up and gets it and not afraid to catch the ball in traffic over the middle.
Zy’marion Lang | FL - another taller WR…dude needs an offer today! Can run, catches with his hands, good over the shoulder hands as well. Like this guy a lot! Always like Florida talent (assuming they aren’t simply bag chasing). He feels a little under the radar to me right now so I’d be showing him love.
Jeremiah McClellan | MO - fast, mean, big bodied but overly large that it affects his quickness. Really like this cat. Think he could grow into a really solid and sturdy college WR.
Nicholas Marsh | MI - love his frame and again, think he’s in that “modern” mold of WR. Not elite speed but plenty fast. High points the ball and is tough. Doesn’t hurt that he’s from Ruke’s high school either.
Chance Robinson | FL - probably silly to list a kid from Thomas Aquinas, but he’s a stud. Another of those guys that are 6-1/6-2 that I’d be beating the doors down to land…we need more “mid sized” guys. Highly sought after so perhaps a pipe dream, but you miss all the shots you don’t take, right?
Jonathan Paylor | NC - as the slot guy, would LOVE to land this dude. We know him pretty well by now but strong, fast, very much in that Amari frame in that he could play RB, but bigger than Amari. (No Jr highlights out yet).
Jaylan Hornsby | NJ - bit of a taller guy, with room to fill out, but he high points well, tracks the ball well. Largely a boundary guy but he isn’t afraid to go over the middle. Plus athleticism and plays with an edge.
Zion Kearney | TX - again, a mid sized guy who has some girth to him but remains fast. Quick out of his breaks, tough, good hands.
Brandon Rehmann | PA - fast, quick twitch but in a slightly larger frame. Willing blocker, and seems as though he could play all over.
Dae’Vonn Hall | NE - nice mid sized WR with decent speed and decent hands. Works though trash pretty well and (are you sensing a theme) appears to be tough.
Freddie Dubose | TX - coming off an ACL which is unfortunate so no junior highlights. But he’s lean, tall, and moved well prior to injury.
https://youtu.be/4XgqfSPe43A

Keylen Adams | VA - cut from AW0 cloth. On the more lean side, but I like that he’s from VA. I think we need to try to recruit VA to potentially avoid going toe to toe with UGA rn. Jmo. But I like him as a slot.
http://www.hudl.com/v/2Jd0Rv

Alex Taylor | NC - I’ve never been high on him. I see a Deondre Overton. Idk I just think he’s the type of WR Jeff Scott may have been able to mold a bit, but haven’t we seen enough of that? He seems to be a one trick pony to me. Better than some of the tales last cycle, but if we’re dreaming….

A nugget to pass along tonight ...

We were told today to expect Lancaster (Texas) four-star corner Corian Gipson to not make his official visit to Alabama, and we have since confirmed that Gipson cancelled. We don't anticipate him making it up.

As we wrote in our Monday Insider, we weren't sure whether Gipson would follow through on the Tide OV.

It's Ohio State next weekend where things get interesting.

Jeff Scott Random Discussion

1st, this thread is only to have random discussion on Jeff Scott's past/future. No right or wrong. Just opinions and thoughts. Hopefully no vitriol.

Reading the comments about JS working the football camps as a counselor has got me wondering about his future.

I think he was a great position coach and recruiter while on staff here. I do think as a CO-OC with Elliot, JS brought the "big play" parts of our offense. He seems like he was willing to take risks where TE was more conservative. A good Ying/Yang.

I'm wondering if the South Florida situation soured JS on big time football. He certainly lived through his Dad's career and now he has experienced up's and down's in his short career. I'm sure he made enough money to live comfortably wherever he would like to live.

Reading the comments about his counselor work makes me wonder if wants to work behind the scenes at Clemson as he still loves the game of football. He obviously loves the area. He wants to spend time with his family. He can still make more $$ than the average American. He doesn't seem to want a big-time assistant role or head coaching role at this time. It makes me think he can be a Woody McCorvey/Brad Scott clone. Kinda a Chief of Staff. He can still influence young people, help build relationships (which he seems to be great at), but yet not put in Head Coach or Asst. Coach hours. He can raise his family as well as doing a job or involved in a business he loves and his good at. And I do think he can somewhat challenge Dabo. Every successful business has a "glue" guy that is essential to the business' success. JS might be this guy for Clemson for the next several years

I think it's a win-win for all involved, Clemson FB and JS.

Antwann Hill Jr. Game Evaluation: '25 QB Prospect

Yesterday I posted my game evaluation of George MacIntyre, which you can see here. I got to go over Antwann Hill last night as well as the morning, while he's meanwhile camping at Clemson. Hill has not yet been offered, but there seems to a level of mutual interest. I'm aiming to get Blake Hebert done tomorrow as I was able to find a game from him, but TBD on that. Without further ado,

Context: 2nd game of the year for Houston County facing a solid Perry team from what I saw. HoCo was down 28-3 and came back to win on a 2pt conversion 57-56 with 10 seconds to go.

Offense: HoCo runs a pretty simple spread attack that relies on Ryan Taleb, an actually pretty talented but undersized back who will likely find a place in the FCS or low FBS, to get consistent yards on the ground while letting Antwann Hill air it out vertically to Kale Woodburn, a WR committed to Cincinnati who is very underrated due to his 5’9 size. I bet he turns into a pretty dang good slot receiver for the Bearcats. Lot of hitches and curls combined with the threat of Hill airing it out deep to keep defenses on edge.

****In my evaluation, I am keeping in mind that I’m evaluating a week 2 game for Hill vs a playoff game for MacIntyre. That likely will lead to more issues from Hill that will get worked out as the season goes along.

What Hill does well:

Hill has excellent arm strength and a beautiful deep ball. HoCo's offense is predicated on freeing up easy stuff underneath by having the threat of going vertical. Hill executes this well as he has a beautiful deep ball. Multiple times he was accurate within inches from 30-40 yards. He throws a mean deep back shoulder fade. I noted an impressive TD pass where he threw that back shoulder fade from the 30 yard line on the far hash and he couldn’t have put it in a better place. Along with that, He’s comfortable working from the far hash on curls and hitches to the other side as well as out routes across field. If you ask me, I think Hill can push 65 yards on his deep ball if needed. NFL level arm talent.

I like Hill’s progressions. For a sophomore, he does a good job scanning and having an internal clock to find a quick dump off to his back. It can sometimes get him in trouble when he’s pressing and trying to do too much late in the game, but I think he did a good job finding positive yards through the air when nothing else was there.

Gotta say, I like Hill’s guts. I never found him prone to falling backwards when a blitz was in his face. In one of the best moments of the game, he’s facing interior pressure about 25 yards out from the endzone. He knows he has his Y running a slot post and IDs man coverage. It’s the Woodburn, Cinci commit WR, so he has a good feeling he'll be open. He stands tall in the pocket, isn’t fazed by the pressure, and throws an absolute 20 yard dart for a TD. Huge play momentum wise in HoCo's comeback on 4th down to keep the game close.

Where Hill has room to grow:

It became a theme throughout that Hill doesn’t like to scramble. He preferred trying to find a receiver even when he had open grass in front of him. It’s unclear whether this is a mental block or he’s just really slow. I’ll tie this into inconsistent pocket presence. Sometimes, like in that aforementioned TD pass, he’s great and knows when he can get a throw off. Other times, I think he stuck in the pocket far too long instead of bailing out and evading pressure. He takes a bad sack with a minute left when he needs to bail and instead tries to step up into the pocket.

Hill is inconsistent in his accuracy. It can almost always be tied to his footwork, which is common. He has a bad habit of double stepping into a throw when he gets excited. Like instead of stepping and throwing, he’d take a baby-step and then his big step. It threw his timing and synchronization off and his accuracy suffered. It wasn’t bad throughout and he made some incredible throws, but he also made some head scratchers. Normal Sophomore year tape stuff.

There were a few WTF decisions. One interception where it was just unclear what he saw to make him throw it, another ball into far too much traffic taking an unnecessary risk. These felt like Sophomore decisions. Something that isn’t a dealbreaker unless it continues into next year.

Overall:

You can’t watch Hill and not understand where the hype comes from. His arm is massive and he throws a great deep ball. Along with that, he has moments where it all comes together and it’s gorgeous -- great pocket presence, guts, big time accurate throw, etc. This is an evaluation that I wouldn’t consider finished until I get to see later season games or a game next year. If he cleans up his footwork and overall mechanics, he will likely cut out the inaccurate throws. That alongside cutting out some of the decision making errors and Hill can easily fit the profile of a top 50 or higher prospect. If not, I think I’d place him in the 75-100 range due to his arm strength, size, guts and flashes of overall excellence and figure he can become a big-time QB with a QB coach who drills the mechanics into him while continuing to make smarter decisions. Just need to see a little bit more from him.

Alabama crying about baseball officiating

The blame the loss on a missed strike three where the third base ump ruled no swing. I kept up with the thread in TI with the Tennessee game. I thought Clemson got hosed the other way with swing calls. I didn't cry about that and neither did anyone else. Both Alabama's in-game and post game threads blamed officiating for their loss.

So far, so good on my best scenario of game outcomes: Tennessee is losing, Alabama has lost, and the Chickens sit on the verge of elimination. I would like Oregon and Stanford to win so the PAC can rightfully claim too many SEC teams were put in the tournament and given too many regionals. Oral Roberts, Dallas Baptist, Indiana State, and SMU have all shown there is good baseball outside the SEC.

DeAndre McDaniel- coaching his butt off at camp

I’m up here in Clemson this weekend and took my two daughters on a golf cart ride around campus, stopped and walked through the nature trails near the new rowing facility, etc. As everyone in the Upstate knows it’s absolutely beautiful weather up here right now.

We also stopped at the indoor practice facility and watched the receivers and defensive backs work out against one another. Let me say this, DMac was absolutely coaching his butt off. You can tell he has a ton of energy, is super relatable and the high school kids seem to really gravitate towards him. He was also having a blast coaching. I hope we can hang onto him as he has “rising star” written all over him.
