Remember the first spring game with Chad Morris?

Here's a funny anecdote about the spring game that first year in 2011. The offense was, in a word, bad.

Balls were overthrown, thrown in the dirt and dropped by receivers as the Clemson passers went 19-61. WR DeAndre Hopkins looked good, but I thought the rest of receivers were uneven at best. I'd be surprised if 5-star WR Sammy Watkins wasn't starting by the third game.

Boyd struggled throwing and so did backup Cole Stoudt. Stoudt actually has a nice arm, but looked out of place running the offense. He's a pocket passer and I believe he'd be more suited to a pro-style offense. If Boyd goes down, this offense will have problems. Even if he plays, there are apparent issues.

I've heard you can't judge quarterbacks in a spring game, but I know what I saw, and the passing part of the offense needs work.

This is a quick recap release from Clemson:

Barnes’ Pick-Six Propels White Team To 20-13 Victory
CLEMSON, S.C. — Midyear enrollee Khalil Barnes’ 22-yard interception return for touchdown with fewer than two minutes to play gave the White squad, led by Running Backs Coach C.J. Spiller, a 20-13 victory against the Orange squad, led by Defensive Run Game Coordinator/Defensive Tackles Coach Nick Eason, on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

The game attracted an estimated crowd of 50,000 people, the fifth-largest crowd on record for a Clemson Spring Game. Clemson legends Dexter Lawrence (Orange) and Wayne Gallman (White) served as honorary coaches for their respective squads.

White team quarterback Cade Klubnik completed eight of his first nine pass attempts for 62 yards. He finished the contest 18-for-33 for 190 yards. Orange team running back Domonique Thomas was the game’s leading rusher, carrying 14 times for 63 yards and a touchdown.

The defenses combined for seven sacks and four interceptions. Sherrod Covil Jr. and Bubba McAtee posted a team-high six tackles for the White squad, while Barrett Carter, Peter Woods and Kylon Griffin tied for the Orange team lead with seven stops each.

This year’s intrasquad scrimmage featured a slight change in roster construction from recent years. Whereas the top offensive and defensive units were usually split between the Orange and White teams, this year, Head Coach Dabo Swinney opted to keep each unit intact and pit the team’s top available offense against the top available defense. While position coaches and the entire Clemson Football support staff were split, coordinators Garrett Riley and Wes Goodwin called plays for both squads.

After the Orange team made a stop on the game’s opening possession by the White squad, kicker Liam Boyd opened the game’s scoring by converting a 51-yard attempt on the Orange team’s opening possession. The Orange team’s scoring drive covered 47 yards in 10 plays.

The White team responded on its second possession, as an impressive 19-yard run by running back Phil Mafah on the drive’s ninth play put the White team on the Orange two-yard yard. Mafah then plunged into the end zone on the following play to take a 7-3 lead.

In the middle of the second quarter, the White team looked primed to extend its lead on a fourth-and-goal at the Orange two-yard-line. However, midyear enrollee Jamal Anderson deflected a Klubnik pass that was intercepted by safety R.J. Mickens at the Orange five-yard line to end a 12-play drive without points.

The Orange team recorded a second interception of Klubnik on the first play of the White team’s next possession. Safety Andrew Mukuba picked off a ball deflected by cornerback Nate Wiggins and returned the interception 40 yards to the two-yard line. The Orange team needed only one play to convert the turnover into points, as Thomas rushed for a touchdown to give the Orange squad a 10-7 lead it would take into halftime.

Kicker Quinn Castner extended the Orange lead to 13-7 on the final play of the third quarter. His 32-yard field marked the culmination of a nine-play, 58-yard drive.

In the fourth quarter, the White team engineered a 14-play, 75-yard drive for what appeared to be the go-ahead score. However, after running back Keith Adams Jr. scored on a one-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 13-13, the ensuing PAT attempt was blocked by midyear enrollee Peter Woods to keep the score level.

The Orange team inherited the ball with 1:46 to play in search of a game-winning drive. Instead, on the drive’s opening play, Barnes stepped in front of a pass by midyear enrollee Christopher Vizzina and returned the interception 22 yards for the game-winning pick six.

The contest completed Clemson’s 15-session spring practice window and offered Clemson fans a glimpse of the returning ACC Champions. Clemson will add an additional 12 signees from its 2023 recruiting class this summer in advance of fall camp starting in August.

Season ticket requests for the 2023 season remain open. More information for fans wishing to witness Clemson’s pursuit of a 13th consecutive season with 10-plus wins and Dabo Swinney’s chase of Frank Howard’s school record for career head coaching wins can request season tickets and learn more at ClemsonTigers.com/FootballTickets. In addition to early-season non-conference contests against Charleston Southern and Florida Atlantic, Clemson’s 2023 home slate includes marquee ACC games against Florida State, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech and North Carolina as well as Notre Dame’s first visit to Death Valley since a wet and memorable Clemson win against the Irish in 2015.

Barnes

Mr Barnes was a questionable, fall back take to me after we flipped the three star from Wake Forest. I'm wrong again!

He was easily one of the best true freshmen playing yesterday. I went back and looked at his highlights, and I think some of the concern about him was that he is an athlete. He has one heck of a resume on both defense and offense.
On top of that, he just turned 18 in February and has the frame to grow into one heck of a safety / linebacker player.

Hannah Goodwin

Does anyone know why she transferred to NC State. She started for us as a freshman and was a very good hitter but had an injury her second year. I lost track of her after that but saw this weekend that she was the starting third baseman for NC State and is their leading hitter. Does anyone know why she left??

My takes on the spring game.

#1 Who is this Liam Boyd kid from Asheville?
#2 Domonique Thomas is actually a very good RB to have in the stable, a great change-of-pace compact bowling ball that just pops through holes.
#3 You are not going to outrun our defense, we are as fast as anyone in the country
#4 Peter Woods may be the strongest true freshman I have ever seen, only behind William Perry.
#5 And I am not a fan of tearing up 150 seats in the West Endzone for maybe 30 people to have a tailgate close to the field.

Fake handoffs

Did anyone else notice yesterday besides not shifting or motion that it looked like we intentionally didn’t show the pull from the RB on pass plays? Over and over again the QB would just passively hold the ball out where the RB would normally be but the RB wouldn’t even act like he was going to take the ball.. Just went straight into pass pro..We purposely didn’t show anything at all

Van Halen/Percy Sledge/Rush/Jimmy Buffett/Abba/Peter Frampton/Weekend Music Thread

Hope everyone has had a good week.

First I started doing work for a guy from Pickens towards the end of last year. We become pretty good friends. His son lives in Nashville and has released one album. Mixing his second album now in Maurice, Louisiana. Different cause he has some different types of music on his albums but mostly I guess Country. He writes all his lyrics and music. Has written music at Kid's Rock house and Kevin Costner brought rights to 2 of his songs. Check him out. Great story teller in his lyrics in my opinion. Love his writing skills.

On this day in 1979, the Van Halen LP “Van Halen II” debuted on the Billboard 200 Album Chart at #46 (April 14)

Many of the songs on Van Halen II are known to have existed prior to the release of the first album, and are present on the demos recorded in 1976 by Gene Simmons, and in 1977 by Ted Templeman, including an early version of "Beautiful Girls" (then known as "Bring On the Girls") and "Somebody Get Me a Doctor."

The black-and-yellow guitar on the back of the album known as "Bumblebee" is buried with Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell, who was killed December 8, 2004.
Eddie Van Halen placed it in his Kiss Kasket at his funeral because Darrell had said it was his favorite.

David Lee Roth is shown in a cast in the inner liner notes, as he allegedly broke his heel on the third try of the spread-eagle jump used on the back cover photo.

In the liner notes, The Sheraton Inn of Madison, Wisconsin is thanked.
On Van Halen's first tour, they stayed at the hotel and destroyed the seventh floor, having fire extinguisher fights in the hallways and throwing televisions out windows.

They blamed the incidents on their tour-mates at the time, Journey…

The album went to #6 in the US, #11 in the Netherlands, #15 in Canada, #22 in Sweden, #23 in the UK, #24 in Germany, #30 in Japan, and #68 in Australia.

Exactly fifty years ago, on this day in 1973, the Led Zeppelin LP “Houses of the Holy” went to #1 on the UK Albums Chart (April 14)

Led Zeppelin’s fifth studio album was yet another superb musical offering...

Both guitarist and producer Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones had installed home studios, which allowed them to arrive at the “Houses of the Holy” recording sessions with complete compositions and arrangements.

It’s a stylistically diverse album compared to Zeppelin’s earlier albums, containing fan favourite songs like “The Song Remains the Same", “Over the Hills and Far Away", “D'yer Mak'er", "The Rain Song" and "No Quarter".

The cover was the first for the band to be designed by Hipgnosis and was based on a photograph taken at Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland.

My last post on this album was removed by Facebook due to the album cover being offensive, so I didn’t post it this time…

“Houses of the Holy” went to #1 in the US, the UK, Australia and Canada, #2 in Finland, #3 in the Netherlands, Japan, and Austria, #4 in Norway, and #8 in Germany.

In 2020, the album was ranked at #278 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

On this day in 1967, the Tommy James and the Shondells single “I Think We’re Alone Now” broke into the US Billboard Top 10 (April 8)

The track by Tommy James & the Shondells from the LP of the same name was written and produced by Ritchie Cordell, who wrote or co-wrote many songs for the band.

The classic 60s hit went to #4 on the US Billboard Hot 100, #6 in Canada, #7 in New Zealand and #8 in South Africa.

“I Think We’re Alone Now” has been covered a few times, notably by Lene Lovitch as the original A-side to her hit single “Lucky Number”, and by Tiffany in 1987, which became a worldwide #1 hit.

On this day in 1972, the Paul Simon single “Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard” debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #90 (April 8)

The second single from his second studio album peaked at #22 in the US, but went all the way to #6 in Canada, #7 in New Zealand, and #15 in the UK.

The line, "Rosie, the queen of Corona," references the Corona neighborhood in Queens, New York, near where Simon grew up.

The video was filmed at Mathews-Palmer Park in Hell's Kitchen, which was standing in for Halsey Junior High School in Forest Hills, Queens, the neighborhood in which Simon grew up and met Art Garfunkel in high school.

It has a hip hop intro, a bit of skipping, and Paul Simon playing some pick up basketball and stickball with the kids.
It also features basketball player Spud Webb, baseball legend Mickey Mantle, and football coach-commentator John Madden.

Cool song…

On this day in 1972, the T. Rex LP “Electric Warrior” peaked at #32 on the US Billboard 200 Album Chart (April 8)

The album containing two of the band’s biggest hits (“Jeepster” and “Get it On”) went all the way to #1 in the UK, and peaked at #15 in Australia.

The album is credited as being the first ever example of the glam rock genre.

The Jam's Paul Weller cited it as one of his all-time favourite records, hailing Bolan's guitar playing as "really unique. You know his sound instantly."
Lol Tolhurst of the Cure also said that they listened to it during their formative years: "We were listening to T.Rex at this time,” [...] “I recall Robert [Smith] had a copy of Electric Warrior".

On this day in 1978, the Jimmy Buffett LP “Son of a Son of a Sailor” debuted on the Billboard 200 Album Chart at #58 (April 8)

A Parrothead favourite, Jimmy’s eighth studio album went on to peak at #10.

The single "Cheeseburger in Paradise" from the album appears on all of Buffett's major greatest hits collections and is a perennial concert favorite, one of "The Big 8" songs that he has played at almost every concert, and is of course the song that the Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurant chain is named after...

Senator Feinstein’s downfall presents one weird trick the GOP can use to stop Dem judicial weaponization

Love it!

The Democrats have found themselves in a pickle, thanks to 89-year-old Dianne Feinstein, who refuses to resign even though she’s in the hospital and unable to fulfill the duties of her job.

Back in February, Feinstein announced she would not seek reelection in 2024. However, that’s not helping Dems today; as her absence is causing a major backup of Biden’s nominees. The Hill:

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) announced on Wednesday that her return to work in Washington has been delayed due to ongoing health complications and called on the Senate to appoint a temporary replacement for her on the Judiciary Committee.
Her announcement came hours after Reps. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) and Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) called for her to resign from the chamber.

Right now, Dems have 14 judicial nominees who are “pending.” They’ve had hearings, but no votes, thanks to Feinstein’s absence. Chuck Schumer says he’ll honor Dianne’s wishes and find a Dem senator who can “fill in” for her. However, that would require “senate approval,” and this presents the GOP with a golden opportunity to flex their political muscle. The GOP can “pounce” and use the Democrat’s weakness as a weapon against them, for a refreshing change of pace.

This is a way in which the GOP can fight back against the weaponization of the judiciary system by the Democrats. It would be a strong message of protest after the arrest of President Trump and the guilty verdict in the Douglass Mackey “meme trial” case.

Here’s what reporter Rogan O’Handley said in his Twitter post in case you can’t read it embedded above:

“Sen. Feinstein is requesting a temporary replacement on the Judiciary Cmte
Biden’s judicial nominees are held up as she recovers in CA
It requires 60 votes (9 GOP votes)
This is our chance to stop the weaponization of the judiciary
Do NOT vote in favor of her replacement”

Will the GOP make this common-sense bold move?

Probably not. After all, we have more than nine RINOS in the senate, so the chances of them taking a stand and putting up a fight is slim to none. However, this move it what should be happening, and if we elected real fighters, it’d be a no-brainer.

You get what you vote for.
