Well the Hispanic students are here in The USA going to a school paid for by American tax payers, they should bring their own American Flag and not be insulted by it. If they can't then I have no concern about their feelings.

Did they play the national anthem before the game? If so, did he take down the flag afterward? If people get upset at the sight of the flag being waved at them in any manner then they need to grow a pair. It's a flag and it will not hurt them. If it is mentally opposing for them, then by all means move to a country that fits their needs.

Why is it anytime i traveled to a country I was reminded to respect their customs but here at home I cant even express my own without offending people? Am I being unreasonable or racist? Im willing to bet that if they made efforts to learn these things no one would try to offend them with our Flag, if that is the case. Its not even their fault. I'm sure the principal was trying to disengage any conflicts, but the price he will pay within his own community may prove to be greater. I have been a part of this rivalry for most of my life. Know the dynamics from both sides very well. Principal Lavely made the right call on this one. I know how headlines look, and i'm not surprised this has generated some buzz. However, no doubt that TR has used this as a way to taunt the Berea students over the last 5-6 years. I can understand how it looks to outsiders or those unfamiliar with the situation, but it was the right call.

Well this is awkward...

I was actually kicked out of a basketball game my senior year when we played at Berea because I brought an American flag. Lavely actually went to bat for me by calling the assistant principal from Berea the following day and, as far as I know, made it a complete nonissue at the time.

Since he gave me the benefit of the doubt then I'll give him the benefit of the doubt now. He is correct that they were using the flag to taunt the Berea student body based on precedence. As far back as I can remember TR students would bring American flags to any sporting event against Berea. Only Berea. So it was 100% due to the stereotyping of the Berea area.

Now, there was a lot of vitriol between both student bodies several years ago, but nothing was really taken to heart - I don't think. It was just a rivalry and we were trading low blows where we could, kids being kids. But with how easily offended everyone is today I think he made the right move for the school as a whole.

It's not complicated. Read the two posts after mine from people involved and aware of details.

Cliffs: kids brought flags to taunt the Hispanic kids (yeah prob from Mexico) that go to Berea.

I don't know if they are illegal. In my experience, most were probably born here, but solid chance a few are illegal and several more have parents who are.

Not the point however.

I don't care where anyone stands on immigration, you can't have a whole student section at a school sponsored event mocking a whole group of kids from another school based on their ethnicity.

The American flag is the center piece of this discussion for obvious reasons, but as others have stated, it was being used as a prop. At a game I attended last basketball season between two schools, one which has a high Hispanic population, the flags were one of many props, including Make American Great signs, Trump signs, and build the wall signs.

So yeah, it sucks that something as great as the flag was discouraged from being taken into a game.

Sucks even more than adults on a message board think it's ok for kids to use the flag to ridicule another group of kids.

I think there is some sort of assumption in your post and others that the Hispanic kids are offended by the flag in general. Pretty sure that isn't the case. Sure most of the Mexican/Americans I know are proud of their heritage and pull for the Mexican soccer team, but they don't hate America or the flag.

However punks waving it in their face to rub their nose in how unwelcome they are is probably not appreciated.
