On the broader issue of immigration and illegal immigration, I think the Democrats are straight up wrong. How can anyone be ok with millions of people hanging out in this country illegally? Housing? Provided for. Health care? They don’t pay, and we all pay more as a result. Legal immigrants go through a process that spans years to get permanent residence here, and the illegal ones are going to be gifted it for nothing. That’s your position if you aren’t going to deport them. Foreign PhD students come here and aren’t guaranteed a visa to work after they graduate, but people that aren’t fully literate in Spanish, let alone English, don’t have to worry. Democrats will bend over backwards to help them.
Asylum is for political dissidents and those displaced by war and ethnic cleansing. It’s not a get out of jail free card for economic migrants. If immigration isn’t forcefully addressed, people are going to move further to the right and embrace ever more extreme sentiments, which we see in Europe. Are the Republicans perfect on the issue? No, but I have zero reason to believe Kamala is going to kick out millions of people, which is not a happy thing but more fair to legal immigrants and citizens.
You don’t want people to overwhelm the system trying to come in here? Don’t send the message that you welcome them with open arms. Give people water so that they don’t die in the desert, but send them back. Help Mexico secure its own border if need be. Comparing the situation in which people are arriving now to the late 19th and early 20th centuries is crazy. We’re a high tech economy that doesn’t have a limitless supply of factory jobs to fill.

Is it Democrats claiming daily that the borders are open and everyone can come in illegally, or has it been the Republican message for 10+ years that Democrats want/have open borders? Because i'm hard pressed finding any Democrat president/senator/representative saying in media that they want open borders/undocumented immigrants have carte blanche to come into the country. I sure as shit see Republican elected officials broadcasting this shit daily, though.
To give one example, sanctuary cities. An admission that they aren’t going to use law enforcement resources to aid in the enforcement of federal immigration law. To give another, Biden reversed Trump’s general policy of keeping asylum seekers out before an immigration court got to their case.
Sure, the Democrats are doing something. I think you’re being dishonest with yourself if you don’t see them as having enabled the problem to develop to the extent it has. You can’t say in sincerity that you deeply care about keeping people out when you make little to no effort to remove them if they do get in, and go even further to provide services to them. Those are fair points, but I don’t think anyone besides the MAGA GOP wants to “keep people out.” Democrats, by and large, want an easier path to citizenship because we recognize the value immigrants have to our society writ large.
Mass deportations are a horrendous solution. Funding for more lawyers/judges/etc to allow for more expedited screenings is, imo, the best solution.

Like you said, the number of Democrats who openly declare, “I want an open border,” is close to 0. That doesn’t count for much. I raise the general scenario about breaking the law because I think they largely have the same attitude with criminal justice.
Kamala is also talking tough (or tougher) on the border because of political pressure from Trump. She wouldn’t be playing the same card in a Democratic primary. When she got elected to the Senate in 2016, her first public appearance was at an event set up with the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles. Come on now.
