OT: Mass shooting in El Paso

So we should liberate the concentration camps from the U.S. Government with AR-15's? lol Great logic there.

I deactivated my twitter. Maybe I'll go reactivate it to see what's up

Smart move. I need to do that. Twitter is a damn cespool - aside from Larry Williams tweets.

They just busted a compound that was training kids to shoot up schools not too long ago.

I remember that. But it kinda just disappeared. Not sure what happened.

The real solution involves all of the following:
1. Requiring states to report to a central registry. The Va Tech and Charleston shooters would've run into obstacles, if reporting occurred
2. More mental health counselors in the schools. Often, teachers and students know who these people are in advance.
3. Go back to the old NRA mission of educating and training responsible gun ownership.
4. Drop any references to gun confiscation. That will never happen here. Nor should it.
5. Get to root causes. It's doubtful that we can create stable two parent homes. We can provide mentors who guide yuh young men towards responsibility.
6. Parents call your kids out of the basement and turn off the gaming systems. If your kid is the best gamer in your neighborhood, you might have a problem. Send them outside for hard physical labor.
7. Tone down the rhetoric. The continual demonization of the other (immigrant, conservative, liberal, etc) with inflammatory language is gasoline for some living on the fringes.
8. Quit publishing the names and faces of the shooters.

I'm okay with any technology that makes enforcing current laws easier as long as it doesn't violate other laws (privacy, etc). I don't think that would be an issue here.

The rest I like. #7 needs to happen on BOTH sides. So many people condemn conservatives for their rhetoric, then say the same types of things ABOUT conservatives. And conservatives do it to liberals too.

These are all based on the assumption that the shooter was crazy.

When you intentionally kill over 20 people you don't know - you're freaking nuts. Something is wrong inside your head.

500 to Medical errors
300 to the Flu
250 to Suicide
200 to Car Accidents
40 to Homicied via handgun

(quoting Neil deGrass Tyson's post that he made after I posted)

Tyson got lit up for that post but data is data. Doesn't mean we don't address root causes, but data says what data says.

So we should liberate the concentration camps from the U.S. Government with AR-15's? lol Great logic there.

As nutty as this is gonna sound, she actually kind of has a point in theory - that the same people wanting to disarm the populace (which BTW is the end goal) also think the government is capable of putting people in "concentration camps." While the idea of the people rising up against the government seems crazy and like it would never happen (and BTW I'm not advocating it here) there is precedent.

The original idea behind the 2nd was to give the people the ability to resist and overthrow an oppressive government that had become too powerful. It seems laughable now since the military/government has some really crazy weapons, but that was the intent. To prevent the government from being able to become effectively a dictatorship, slaughtering of citizens (ie Nazi Germany and/or Stalin). Remember that the Continental Militia (ie armed citizens) was a big part of winning the Revolution. And they were just a bunch of guys who were good at shooting stuff.

It's also why I don't personally buy the argument that the 2nd applies to "state militias" (ie the National Guard). The founding fathers would have NEVER given control of the weapons needed to hold the government accountable, TO the government. Kinda killed the whole point. Admittedly this is a bit of a crazy road once you use that to try to buy an M2 HMG, a howitzer, or an M1 tank fully outfitted. I don't really want to go down that road.

I'm not advocating for any sort of revolution mind you, or any sort of call to violence against anyone. I'm simply stating what the intent of the second amendment is.

Just on the technical aspect, I agree with @nsp1996 except for the "anyone" part. I would say "most people" though - with the right setup and some practice.

British solders in WWII supposedly got up to 35 rounds in a minute with a bolt action (the origin of the "mad minute") - using a bolt-action rifle in .303 Enfield, which I've never shot but supposedly kicks like a damn mule. It's tricky and takes practice but it can be done (so "anyone" may indeed be a stretch). The standard was 15 rounds in a minute which isn't far off of the 9 rounds in 30 seconds. Straight-pull bolt action makes it easier, and with a lever action or pump action rifle (pump rifles are rare but they do exist) it's VERY possible with an intermediate cartridge. Of course that's just the shooting part. Not moving, finding targets, and reloading.

As an aside - there's a lot more that goes into a military weapon than just being a semi-auto with a box-feed detachable magazine. Look up the M50/M55 Reising SMG from WWII. Great police weapon for the time but a crappy military weapon in WWII. But that's drifting off of the subject.

The reason I care is that we are all God's children. Secondly I care because I'm wondering who is going to process those chickens. I live in a new community where many houses are being started every month. I am yet to see a black or white framer, sheetrock installer, painter, roofer or most any other tradesman. Who is going to do that work? I do believe we need immigration laws but I don't understand why we don't issue millions of work permits for undocumented migrants who are doing work that apparently the rest of us think we are too good to do. I also don't understand a policy that arrests 600 or so workers but doesn't charge the companies or managers who hired them.[/QUOTE}

I think we agree on a bunch. But we are kinda hijacking this thread. I only brough illegal aliens/immigration because I think that it is a great example of a more pressing issue that needs to be dealt with than banning a type of firearm.

The work will get done. Or, it won't. Construction/contracting business wwill take a bit less profit... consumers will pay a little more, and the work will get done. It always does. They are taking advantage of the fact that illegals will work for less and they can pay them cash as they take in case for jobs... it's all part of the business model

I'm all for work permits... however the first rule of trauma care is stop the bleeding. Which to me means:

1. Close and seal the border. Yes, a wall.

2. Remove incentives for illegals to come illegally. a.) start mandating proof of citizenship (not just a driver's licence) for getting any sort of goverment benefit b.) I would cut back (a lot) on all the government funded bilingual services and save that money for something of need by english speaking US citizens. (also incenting non-english speaking citzens to learn..) c.) Crack down on wire transfers to mexico from illegals (again, require proof) d) ELIMINATE "Sancuaries" by either reducing federal aid/tax dollar and/or making government officials who flout federal immigration laws open to civil/crimminal prosectution when illegals commit crimes.

3. Remove incentive (increase dis-incentives ) for employers to hire illegals. FINES!

4. Incentivise Mexico to close their southern border and help us police ours. (aid reduction and/or other economic costs...)

Anyway not really about guns.

Dude your description of me is met with laughter! Unfortunately, I speak from experience having done some unspeakable thing with guns, for Our Country, during my 21 years of Honorable Military Service! Thus, a Dude your trying to define as remote controlled looking at tv, defended Our Constitution while others (like Our Bone Spur President & you) Keep crapping On It!
Now please, buy, support & donate to President Bone Spurs As you deem appropriate! I on the other hand, a gun owner, Voter, Military Man will continue to be a voice to counter narrative that does not deter average citizens from mass killings, anti police protection & anti-Constitution!
Humor me please, Dude, how many years & what units did you (kill with a weapon, stop our enemies abroad) serve in For Our Country? After all, Dude, You Are Mr. don’t infringe on My Constitutional Rights!

And, we have a winner! Another triggered TI Warrior claiming military service when a discussion is going off-script!

I like having discussions with internet "veterans" . Where to start?

How about here...

Ok you bring up your supposed 21 years of unspecified military service in a discussion about a shooting in Texas. Why? Probably because you are another "look at me" attention whore who intellectually tapped out. Do I have this wrong?

Well maybe I do... all those "unspeakable things with guns" .. what were they? And you still own them? Jeebus.. and you still are a gun owner???? The police should visit your house now. You sound like you might just be the next mass killer. Please be honest. Are you? I think that probably you should be reported.

No. Probably not. I think that you are more likely a poser. They are the ones who are most likely to tout their military service.

Let's stop screwing around. If you served 21 years in the military.. that is respectible.. but not impressive to me.

I can assume that you wanted to portray your opinions as worth more because of your supposed service. They are not. Can't cycle a bolt in 3 seconds? LOL.

Humor me please, Dude, what units did you (kill with a weapon, stop our enemies abroad) serve in For Our Country?

Edit: Just so I can give proper credit.. Were you drafted? Were you also compelled by the government to serve for 21 years... and as a result receive a pension for life? Wow. tough questions...

LOL! (Edited: Deleted me calling you a poser, since I don't know that you are or are not, other than posers typically want to throw their supposed military service in people's faces at every opportunity)

Tool.

I have guns, and the government has concentration camps. What the fvck is wrong with dum dums and their stupid straw man arguments.

The situation at the boarder was created by trump. the solution he proposes is concentration camps and you want to conflate that with guns? typical nonsense.

It's a joke.

Don't be such a drama queen.

JSYK

Dispite what aoc told you

There are no concentration camps at the boarder.

Are we talking semantics or are you saying their are no camps holding immigrants at the border?

Concentration Camp:
A place where large numbers of people...are deliberately imprisoned in a relatively small area with inadequate facilities.

Those camps have been there for over a decade, but you knew this already.

Also, these people are free to leave these camps anytime they wish.

Also. Not conflating to include concentration camps. Simply pointing out the irony of the left wing nutts who are advocating gun control while calling the immigration facilities concentration camps which they are not.

I said there were no concentration camps.

Nice try. Don't misquote me
It's exhausting trying to discuss things with you. @orangelvis changed the terminology when he responded to me with "Those camps" after I said Concentrations camps and even gave a definition. At that point it was implied that we were discussing concentration camps.

Don't try to take a win where there isn't one.

Depends on how you define camps. They are certainly not concentration camps and the people there are not being held against their will.
You are really beginning to show your true stripes.
Hey, I said Concentration camps and you responded with "Those camps". How would any rational person interpret that?

I notice you did not answer my questions nor responded to any challenges! Instead you have chosen to create a baseless, Trump like deflective narrative against me, while attempting to deflect from the subject; “Gun Violence & The Massacre Of Our Citizens”, Thus;
1. You believing about my Military Service is 100% irrelevant to me!
2 Confirmation about your lack of service shows me your True Self! Of note not serving but hiding behind the Constitution while other Americans are being massacred is Weak! But others, including me, have “voluntarily” fought for your right to behave as you do!
3. Again, Until The Good Lord Calls me Home; I will fight for Americans not to get slaughtered by so call patriots, keep my guns, use my commissary/medical/veterans benefits, throw my Military Service (Some Walk the Walk, Others Have bone spurs) in the face of someone like you, while choosing not to humor you with my Military record!
Finally, enjoy your life! I hope & pray that you, your family, friend or coworkers never experience what occurs daily with Our Policeman & Policewomen; occurred in Charleston, Sandy Hooks, El Paso, Dayton or Orlando...to name a few. Undoubtedly, you would welcome The Lack Of Actions, But Thoughts & Prayers From Senator McConnell & President Trump!

You know nothing about me, jackass. Nothing. And you certainly aren't throwing anything in my face.

Hate to break it to you, but once again, for the record, your military service which you willingly did and were fairly compensated for has nothing to do with anything in this discussion.

But hey just to humor you and to be an honest broker, I'll admit that my 29 years of Army service (and counting) also means not one damn thing in this discussion either. But since you insist on bringing military service into this, I share only to clarify why your 21yrs of service don't impress me all that much. Feel better now?

I agree with nsp1996. Your military service does not give you any more credibility on the issue of gun control.

Our financial system is a colossal mess. We are being overrun by illegal immigrants coming here to game our welfare system. It won't be long before the socialist take over. They always do after they manage to bankrupt the country and everyone is begging for food. Now is probably the best time to own several ARs and plenty of ammo.

I got told on twitter the other day that I am the type of person that should not own a gun. This by a gun control advocate that wants to ban all semi-automatics. He said that I was deranged for suggesting that some of these mass shootings were being carried out by people who's sole motive was to promote more gun control.

This is exactly why we don't need Red Flag Laws. I know i'm not crazy. My company had me tested. If we pass Red Flag Laws, anything we say including the belief in what some think are conspiracy theories are enough for some to suggest that we should not own a gun.

Just recently the FBI promoted the idea that people who believe in conspiracy theories are the root of our domestic terrorist problems. Yes the FBI. Same outfit that tried to overthrow the president.

Your False Flag hypothesis is not crazy. Anyone who would commit a mass murder of strangers is...well... crazy hate filled, deranged... whatever. So that is not bound by any ideology. We have so many loons on the left that are so very angry and frustrated at Trump that it's not a stretch that they would kill to promote their main cause (make Trump look bad) . Same on the other side... I fully support deporting illegals and other measures but I'm not going to go kill people that "look hispanic" or "look arab" ... however maybe some would.

The FBI? I know agents. Great men. However as an organization?.. yeah, it has lost a lot of credibility in my mind. Too political.

I fear our republic may be completely unrecognizable to our founding fathers in another 100 years.

I fear our republic may be completely unrecognizable to our founding fathers in another 100 years.
I mean, it probably is already. Think about all the technology we have just in the last 25 years (roughly 10% of the time the Republic has existed) that they couldn't have even conceived of.

They did a tremendous job that we have lasted this long in the face of such unknowable problems.

I agree.

The more I know, the more impressed I am with those men...who, under threat of death by hanging as traitors and threat of having their surviving family stripped of all land and means of livelyhood, managed to author and sign our constitution and give birth to the greatest nation on the face of this earth. They didn't live on a face of a painting or a drawing...they were real men, with real families, living in color, with real hopes and fears.

Humans are not perfect, only God is. The founding fathers were no exception. Those from the "northern states" at least made a tough call...and allowed the abomination of slavery to continue...because at that place, at that time...it was what was required to preserve the union of states.. They advanced the ball and in so doing set the stage for the tragedy that was the Civil War.

THis is why I am dismayed at the talk of eliminating the electoral college, fthe politicizing of the SCOTUS, admitting those into this country that do not/will not assimilate (and making it easy for them), and more.

I am fearful for my kid's grandkids kids... whom I fear will never know of American exceptionalism.

WoW, my Honorable Military Service really hit a nerve! Well, don’t worry, relax, I would do it again without hesitation! Also, My Honorable Military Service & Happily Married To The Same Woman for 35 Years; allows me to take your calling me “Jackass” for what it is! I will call it lack of Enhanced Vocabulary & Not Based On Facts!

Now: thank you for 29 years of service & I only know you from what comes out of your mouth (typing), thus my approach!
1. Since you claimed to have served 29 years & counting military service:
a. what is your oath?
b. Helsinki 2019?
c. Comments about another vet, seriously?
d. Commander John McCain?
e. Mass Murder of Americans?
- Oh sorry you were just humoring me, thus You Don’t Understand!
2. You don’t have to hate to break it...etc, because I have Nothing To Prove To You, Anyone Else & Would Gladly Serve Our Country Again! Honorably Served 21 Years & have A Big Box Of Stuff To Look Through If I Need Validation!
3. Go back & review my, our original discussions; Then & Only Then will you, hopefully, be able to Understand/Comprehend/Keep Up with Our Discussion, which Again was built on:
a. Gun laws, lack of gun laws, mass killing of Our Citizens, What Would You Suggest or Why Are You Ok With Things As They Are!
Again, please review or stop showing your lack of Understanding/Comprehension to our discussion!

I am done with you.

I called you a jackass because at a minimum you are that.

You pissed me off because you were flapping your gums trying to somehow tout your military service to insinuate some sort of advanced status in this discussion to promote some political point of view. I was, and am, professionally embarrassed.

Yes. Professionally embarrassed.

You also flapped your gums and made some pretty personal statement about something/ someone that you don't know fvck about. Me. Asking me pointed questions about my military service while giving some general bullshit statements about yours that I questioned using your own words after giving you as much info as you shared. ....that still aren't answered. Yeah. Fvck you.

Have a nice day!
