Given that you're so staunchly opposed to government officials seeking the favor of the Creator, Perhaps the first and most apt is Benjamin Franklin. Though he himself was not a believer, he thought it important that his niece (and others) get their moral instruction from parochial schools.
The very concept of right and wrong proceed from religion. Without it, how do you even decide what is right or wrong? Sure, in our society it is wrong to deprive somebody of life or Liberty or property without due process, but that's because our laws were firmly rooted in religion. In fact, is not the word right, just a shortened version of the word righteous?
