DJ U interview on The Athletic

Said he considered transferring after the 2021 season but wanted to make it work, didn’t like running the ball and says the coaching staff kept him in the dark on bringing in Cade against Notre Dame.

Clemson went to South Bend with an 8-0 record but trailed 14-0 at the half. The Tigers began their second series in the third quarter backed up near their goal line, and Uiagalelei drove them near midfield before the drive stalled. Klubnik entered the game on the next series but was picked off on the second play, and Clemson stumbled to a 35-14 loss.

“I don’t think my offensive coordinator knew either (that head coach Dabo Swinney wanted to make the change),” he said. “(Dabo said) ‘I just want to get a spark.’ I was pissed, like, ‘What do you mean a spark? We just had our best drive right there. I’m doing exactly what you’re telling me to do.’”

Uiagalelei felt Swinney had lost confidence in him that went beyond that game. There were games, he said, when he felt the coaches were reluctant to call pass plays in the second half.

“You can feel that too as a player,” he said. “You know sometimes how they call plays; like calling plays scared, timid. Not opening it up 100 percent because they don’t trust the quarterback. I felt that definitely at times. For the quarterback that is tough, like, ‘Man, they don’t trust you.’ They’re saying, ‘Yeah, we trust you, but their actions don’t show it.’ And it’s not just me who sees it, all the other players see it as well. ‘Man, why aren’t we throwing the ball? It’s wide open.’ It was tough.”

OT: Chess??

I thought I asked this before, but a quick search didn't find anything...

Anybody on here play chess?? I learned how to play as a kid, but I never actually played too much. Definitely not in chess club or anything like that. But I've gotten into it recently, and I think I'm fairly decent. I win more than I lose at least, but I have no idea if the people I'm playing are any good or not.

If you play, let's play.

  • In 2021, just 11.5% of Americans 18 years and older -- 28.3M -- smoked tobacco cigarettes, the lowest level since 1965, according to the CDC.
  • Overall, ~18.7% (46 million) of U.S. adults currently use a tobacco product. About 4.5% of adults use e-cigarettes.
  • The agency noted that as use of tobacco cigarettes has declined, e-cigarette use has grown.
  • About 3.5% of the adult population smokes cigars, 2.1% use, smokeless tobacco, and 0.9% user pipes, including hookah, according to the report published in the MMWR.
  • The CDC noted that usage was highest among men; those younger than 65; persons of non-Hispanic other races; Whites; residents of rural areas; poorer individuals; lesbian, gay, or bisexual people; those uninsured or enrolled in Medicaid; adults whose highest level of education is a GED certificate; those with a disability; and those with serious mental illness.

A fired baseball coach just the latest turmoil for Alabama's athletic department

A fired baseball coach is just the latest turmoil for the Crimson Tide athletic department

By: Dan Wetzel - Yahoo! Sports

The individuals and teams are unrelated. The incidents and crimes, varied. None of it should define the many people who haven’t done anything but the right thing. They could fairly argue each thing occurred in a vacuum.

It’s just that the vacuum shares a common base location: Tuscaloosa.

Alabama’s high-powered athletic department has gone through a five-month spell of off-field and off-court trouble that rivals nearly any in college athletics.

The latest came Thursday when the school announced it had “initiated the termination process for head baseball coach Brad Bohannon for, among other things, violating the standards, duties and responsibilities expected.”

No specific reason was given, but the termination of Bohannon, who was in his sixth season at Alabama, comes three days after gambling regulators in Ohio banned sportsbooks in the state from taking wagers on the Crimson Tide baseball team. Other sports wagering outfits, including FanDuel nationally, soon followed.

According to NOLA.com, suspicions arose after two large bets (one a parlay, one on the moneyline) were placed in Cincinnati on favored LSU to defeat Alabama in a game played last Friday. According to ESPN, Alabama scratched its starting pitcher close to first pitch. LSU took an 8-1 lead and held on for a 8-6 victory.

Sports wagering is a heavily regulated and monitored industry, so it is expected that regulatory bodies and federal and local law enforcement will continue to investigate the situation.

A fired baseball coach is just the latest turmoil for the athletic department which, mostly due to its historic football program, stands as a flagship in not just the SEC but the NCAA as a whole. The department brought in $214.3 million in revenue for fiscal 2022, third most in the country.

The tragedies include the Jan. 15 death of Jamea Harris, a 23-year-old single mom, who was caught up in an early morning shootout on the Strip just steps from the UA campus which involved numerous men’s basketball players.

One, junior Darius Miles, was charged with capital murder in the incident. Two others, Brandon Miller and Jaden Bradley, were also on the scene at the time of the shooting, although neither were charged with a crime and were considered witnesses.

The university did not conduct its own investigation into the situation and were blindsided a month later when a Tuscaloosa detective revealed that it was Miller, the team’s star freshman, who brought the would-be murder weapon to the scene of the crime at the request of Miles. Even then, Miller was never disciplined or sat down by coach Nate Oats. He continued to play until the top-seeded Tide were upset in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament.

Miles is being held without bond in a local jail and faces the death penalty if convicted. Miller has declared for the 2023 NBA Draft. Bradley transferred to Arizona.

Last month, one of their expected replacements got into his own trouble. Jaykwon Walton, who had committed to the program after transferring from Wichita State, was arrested in Tuscaloosa after police found marijuana and three guns in a vehicle in which he was sitting.

In Alabama, the marijuana was against the law, although the unregistered guns were not. Either way, Oats immediately cut ties and declared in a statement that “Alabama is no longer recruiting” Walton.

Meanwhile, just last week, Alabama’s deputy director of athletics, Matt Self, was arrested on a third-degree domestic violence charge after Tuscaloosa police were called to his home. Self was in charge of NCAA rules compliance and administering the football program. He was released on Monday. He had previously been arrested in 2010 on a misdemeanor DUI.

Even Nick Saban’s usually steady football program has made some unwelcome headlines, at least with future and past players.

In March, defensive back recruit Tony Mitchell was charged in Florida with possession of marijuana with intent to sell and/or deliver after leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase that police alleged reached 141 mph. His passenger in the vehicle was charged with carrying a concealed firearm without a permit.

Saban suspended Mitchell after the incident.

And just this week, former Tide star Henry Ruggs declared his intention to plead guilty to DUI resulting in death for a 2021 crash in Las Vegas that took the life of 23-year-old Tina Tintor. Ruggs, who starred for the Tide from 2017-2019, was playing for the Las Vegas Raiders at the time. He was found to be drunk driving his Corvette 156 mph on a city street with a 45 mile per hour speed limit, according to police. He faces up to 10 years in prison.

That’s a fired coach, a capital murder case, a death from DUI, a domestic violence charge and all sorts of drugs and guns surrounding one school.

They may be largely unrelated and shouldn’t stain everyone in Tuscaloosa or define the goals and culture of the UA athletic department. But that’s a lot for a single school in such a short period of time.

If you are a Crimson Tide fan, let alone one of the many law abiding athletes and coaches, you have to wonder what might be coming next.

Hopefully it’s nothing more, although additional details are likely to emerge from the various cases and investigations, especially what did or didn’t happen within the baseball program and the night of Harris’ murder.

The storms seem to still be gathering for the Tide.

House Hunting and timing

My wife and I have been casually looking at houses and of course we hesitate because interest rates suck in comparison to what we have. It turned into an interesting discussion among friends because rates are driving down prices. Hot properties are still going to be super hot, but we love a good project and those seem to be sitting and open to offers.

Is this a garbage strategy in the hope that rates will drop over the next few years to refinance? If we wait for rates to drop, I'm thinking we may end up overpaying.

Ty Simpson and Andre Green Jr.

Clemson "replaced" these two with Cade Klubnik and Antonio Williams. I strongly suspect that Clemson just didn't "show the love" to Simpson and Greene in order to land them because further evaluations showed Klubnik and Williams to be better. In both cases, Rivals ratings were high and less than stellar senior campaigns diminished their stock somewhat (rankings rarely drop for Alabama acquisitions).

Coaching evaluations change as more information comes in. With committable offers, Clemson just plays the game differently. If I were an Alabama fan, I would be questioning if my coaches got suckered.

McShay 2024 Mock Draft

These never hold up but figured I'd post the only Tiger included

30. Philadelphia Eagles

Jeremiah Trotter Jr., ILB, Clemson*

Porter went to the team that drafted his dad back in 1999 (Pittsburgh) this year, so why not project Trotter to go to the team that selected his dad in 1998 next year? The younger Trotter is coming off a great season and could join Nakobe Dean to fill the hole left up the middle after the departures of T.J. Edwards and Kyzir White. He has great instincts and 6-foot, 230-pound size. Trotter had 91 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 8.5 tackles for loss, seven pass breakups, two interceptions and a forced fumble last year. He does it all.

The visit has concluded for a Clemson transfer portal target.

UNC Greensboro grad transfer center Bas Leyte spent the day with the coaching staff after arriving yesterday.

Leyte (6-10, 220), a Netherlands native, is the one Brad Brownell and staff are going after to replace Ben Middlebrooks.

He averaged 7.6 points and 4.3 rebounds as a senior starter last season.

We strongly like the Tigers' chances of adding their third transfer piece sooner than later.

Perspective

This board has been overtaken by the far left liberals. Although annoying, it’s their right. Some have more time than others to post and that’s ok. We are all entitled to our opinions. With that being said, facts matter.

Let’s look at Tucker Carlson for example. The most vocal on the board hate him, follow the media’s narrative to spread garbage about him, selectively pick and choose quotes to fit narratives, and accuse him of being some right wing white supremacist. This is eerily similar to the way President Trump has been treated. I wonder why??

Let’s put things in perspective.,,

- after Tucker got fired from Fox News, his response on social media has 80+ million views to date and counting
- around the same time Biden and Kamala’s social media announcement had how many views?? Last I checked was 1800, maybe higher now but you get my point

Very similar situation and common sense will tell most that the vocal left are not the majority regardless of what the 2020 “election’ results show.
