⚖️ MURDAUGH MURDERS & TRIAL THREAD ⚖️

Newman was just inducted into the Cleveland State Law School Hall of Fame. Much deserved.
Cleveland State trying to capitalize while they can...this is better advertising than anything their marketing department has done in the past decade...and it's free.

Newman deserves every bit of praise and positive press he is receiving.

Do they think they can tell what kind of object killed Smith?
The Cup of Justice podcast spoke on this today. Looking for fractured bones on lower parts of body along with other telltale signs of hit and run or other means of death.

While I have soured on Mandy’s method of reporting on this case over the last year or so, today’s podcast was informative on the exhumation and Sandy’s relationship with Mandy.

Did they mention what they thought it would prove? There is nowhere in any report that says Smith was "hit by a car" in the traditional sense. The coroner didn't say Smith went flipping over the grill of a Ford F150. The report was about an object from a car (I believe it was estimated to be a side view mirror of a large truck). Still in his shoes and no other injuries would be consistent with that. That determination could also be consistent with Smith not immediately dying and walking to the middle of the road vs being hit there.

If all Smith has is a head wound, the original determination of a hit and run, or hit by an object from a car, could still be valid.

If he does have other injuries, its more consistent with a hit and run and kills the "body dump" theory.

Except he didn't have injuries to his hands or arms that would be consistent with falling/rolling on the ground after being hit by a vehicle. Unless you think he was hit and didn't fall down.

And he would have to be an idiot to get hit with a side mirror from a car, especially in that location. I have no idea who did it, but do not believe he was hit with the side mirror of a truck.

No, Bland didn’t mention anything other than what you highlighted in bold and he didn’t elaborate on what the various potential injuries could mean. Like you, I’m not sure what could be ruled out.

One thing that stuck out me after watching one of the Murdaugh streaming shows was the amount of blood around his body in the road. I doubt he was injured somewhere else and then dropped off in the road. That still leaves a lot of possibilities open as to how he died but I’m convinced it happened at or near the location where he was found.

I don't think he would be hit by a side view mirror either. That driver would know they hit something and would have had an opportunity to see Steven in the road. But I'm thinking it is something that the driver didn't know was being dragged behind them, or hanging off the side of a truck/trailer and Steven being on the side of the road and not visible to the driver. Maybe a chain, work equipment, heck one of the warning flags from a logging truck bouncing around. At that speed, a small item could cause a fatal injury to the head and its still technically a "hit and run." Whatever it was was ultimately, but not immediately fatal, and it disoriented him enough that he walked and fell in the middle of the road.

Maybe I'm jaded from driving in Atl traffic and have seen it all. Its like a frogger game dodging crap falling off painting vans! The driver has no idea he's dragging an extension ladder behind his van.

Maybe the driver did not know there was someone in the back of a truck with a baseball bat…..

That could also be a cause of the exact same injuries!

But I would guess the driver DID know someone was back there doing that.

The injury to his head would have caused immediate death.

I wish I could insert a poll into this thread. I'm curious to the pulse of this thread.

Tragic Accident? or
Murder?

I'm chalking this up to a tragic accident folks.

How do you define tragic accident? If one did something that was intended to hurt someone but not kill them and then it ended up killing them, then is that an accident or murder?

That’s murder. Maybe not by the legal standard, but it is in my mind.

I don't think a car hitting him, in this case, was for nefarious reasons. There may have been negligence in driving resulting in manslaughter, but its still an accident.

What evidence is there that it wasn't?

Folks walking on the side of the road get hit all the time.
I am not an expert but the experts say 99% of the time your shoes/boots come off when hit by a vehicle...Hard to understand how boots can come off but this was one of the first things I read that his shoes were still on,,,,along with other factors that are common when hit by a vehicle.

He was also wearing loose fitting shoes not lace up boots which makes it even less likely they would remain on his feet. Also, no road burns from the pavement.

One afternoon my friend and his 3 kids were riding their bikes on the shoulder of a road. A driver hit all 4. The driver had failing eyesight and shouldn't have been driving.

The driver called 911 and got help to the scene. My friend and 2 of his kids died. The funeral was heartbreaking. The son had just made his baseball team, so he wore the team outfit and had his mitt in his casket. The daughter wore a horseback riding outfit because she was a rider. The mom wanted her kids to be buried as kids, not stuffed mannequins.

The Mom was admirably strong because the family was deeply grounded in faith. She said that God was strong because he held her up through the funeral and days that followed.

Avoidable accident only if the driver had hung up her license.
