Great news out of South Korea

Herd Immunity is the only answer we have ever had.

Yet we made (illegally) people stay away from each other so NO ONE gets immunity.
And destroyed our economy at the same time.

Who's getting ahead here?
Any of you?
Mission accomplished by a certain group of people sadly. Can’t let a good crisis go to waste.

I have a friend whose brother tested positive twice like 35 days apart.

He got sick on March 18th ish and was feeling fine by 4/1 (he did say it sucked). Thought he couldn't get it again so dropped his guard.

Then about 10 days ago he started feeling bad again and had the test again and still is feeling pretty rough.

Doctors don't want to tell him he contracted it twice but also said he didn't keep the virus for almost 50 days and counting.

We didn't social distance to prevent herd immunity, we did it to prevent the healthcare system from being overwhelmed, or did you all forget that part?
And we're laying off Doctors and Nurses with Hospitals mostly empty.
Did you notice that?

You gonna claim the 2 Million deaths were avoided by the Gov't's actions?

It was never gonna happen.

Nurses and doctors have been laid off because of the freeze on elective surgeries/procedures

This is wrong. It has happened in multiple countries. It happened in New York.

But I won't change your mind. It was predicted weeks ago that if the shut down worked, people who think like you would pop up.

I think it's stupid to think the infections/death rate would have been the same if the shut down didn't happen.

But, believe whatever you want. I take solice in the fact the government and the majority in power don't believe the same.

and the HCA hospital network in Tennessee has said they are going to do elective surgeries 24/7 once they resume them. These are the same greedy bastards (all hospital systems fall into that label) that are labeling non-COVID deaths as COVID to receive a higher Medicare reimbursement. In some circles that is called Medicare fraud.

If it worked which I’m not saying it didn’t, why is everyone freaking out about opening things back up?
One would have nothing to do with the other. People freaking out is about how much they understand herd immunity, not if it really works.

sweden is still a question mark in terms of how effective their strategy was. I saw the other day that they have an extremely high mortality rate. South Korea had testing ready to go back in January so they could start tracing in early February. Our lack of sufficient testing is what forces the shutdown.

I think everywhere is still a question mark. Tons of unknowns

It will be interesting to continue watching what happens in Sweden and South Korea

The Swedes and South Koreans have something we don't have. Absolute belief in the government. These people do what they are told. Notice everybody wearing a mask in the picture for that article. Besides that, Sweden did not let everything just go. Schools were closed. Large public gatherings and travel were curtailed dramatically. Also, Sweden has a very sophisticated health care system. We don't. With all that, Sweden has so far suffered a higher death rate per million than the U.S. And the U.S. is doing about as poorly as anybody. Add to that that we are still in the early stages of this disease. Nobody really knows if Sweden's approach will work or not. They are starting to see a rapid spread of the disease in some areas.

Can a scientist explain to me how shelter-in-place helps with herd immunity? Seems like we decided to have a terrible winter because of trying to manipulate a viral outbreak.

Is it safe to say the world economy stopping was a bad idea now?

Well a couple things that aren’t true here

people are not wearing masks in Sweden or social distancing like you stated. Elementary and middle schools didn’t close, daycares are open.

Notice the question mark. Never said a shutdown of some kind was wrong, but the ones freaking out right now about opening things back up are looking silly to put it nicely.
Maybe because even if 15 times more people have it than are confirmed, that would mean that 95% of the country has not been exposed and thus susceptible. We won't have herd immunity until 65% - 70% of people have immunity, and right now the only way to get it is through being infected, though we don't know how long or effective that immunity may be. This is going to keep spreading until we get to that 65%-70% threshold. The extreme measures that were taken the last couple of months worked to slow the spread, but now that we are opening up, it is going to accelerate the spread again. Hopefully enough people use best practices like masks, social distancing, etc. to keep it from raging, and we don't see what happened in April in the way of deaths, but the counts are going to stay the same or creep up again as people think its over. That means if 70% end up getting this, the death toll would still be over 1 million. And, again, that is assuming there are 15 times more people who have already been infected than we know.

We need to open up as much as possible, but the concern is that too many people think this is behind us and if enough people don't continue to do the common sense things to contain this voluntarily, this could quickly take off and be worse than what we saw a month ago.
